yes I’m going to order a granny cable. Really enjoying the electric element of the drive. Very smooth and easy to use and should save money on short run drives and pottering around

Mine came with the car (it was a used 2018 model, 3 years old when I got it) so I cant advise on which granny leads are good or not. I do see loads advertised online, I think its a safe enough bet to buy from the likes of Micks garage or something like that

This is where the plug in shines. I have a 241 530e and I rarely use petrol during the week. I had the previous model and used the granny cable then but with the new car I got a home charger installed and changed my contract so I have cheaper supply between 2 and 4 am. Car takes over 3 hours to charge fully but I alter the battery percentage on the BMW App so I fully avail of cheaper rate.

At weekends on longer journeys I will regularly get 130-140km on electric power ( a combination of charge and regeneration) , not motorway driving where range will drop but maybe Cork to Limerick.

In urban use range will drop to 70 or 80km depending on types of journey but always much better than previous model. Main reason I traded was the limited range in 2020 version. I probably would suit an electric vehicle but wasn’t prepared to risk high level of potential depreciation on electric vehicles which was becoming an issue when I made the decision.

Should add I have never used a public charger and agree that possibly not suitable for PHEVs ..the car is reasonably economical when in petrol mode, but obviously driving style will affect this, most especially in Sports Mode!!

    Typical example of a suitable granny charger for sale;

Get a proper type 2 tethered charger installed,

You have a 22 kWh battery, you'll need 11 hours to charge it with a granny, you don't need the risk of overheating with it.

Only 4 hours with a proper charger

And probably the best value one at the moment is the BG Sync @ €699 supplied and fitted.

Wait til you see the depreciation on the 530e 🙈

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Yeah I didn’t want to say, but trading in a perfectly good 530e for a brand new model in order to gain an additional 100 kilometres of range must have been awfully expensive. And the depreciation that car is going to suffer over the next few years is going to be eye watering too..

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,155 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Let’s not forget it’s a motors forum and some people like having a new car. Shouldn’t be always whining about depreciation.

If we want to avoid it, buy a Raleigh Burner!

    It was this bit…

"I probably would suit an electric vehicle but wasn’t prepared to risk high level of potential depreciation on electric vehicles which was becoming an issue when I made the decision."

The depreciation on the 530e will make a full EV seem like Dublin 4 property.

Thanks! I’ve always enjoyed your input and advice on this forum.

It’s amazing how so many people like to second guess others. I love buying cars, I love the thrill of getting to know a new car. I’ve ‘lost’ loads of money on depreciation over the years, sometimes a little more than anticipated but c’est la vie.
I’m really enjoying my current car and if it depreciates more than normal I’ll adjust my next purchase decision accordingly .

I would have thought the depreciation would not be too bad on these? Despite their flaws, phevs are popular and to my mind anyhow it’s the pick of the 5 Series range

The UK market gets flooded with 2-3 year old ex lease cars which drives prices down over there and a lot of them make their way to Ireland since they are perfect cars to import. (VAT Qualifying & Cheap VRT.) Thus driving down Irish prices. But regardless of that an expensive BMW is always going to loose a ton of value in its first 3 years of life unless it’s something rare/not worth importing, like a 535d or the likes

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,116 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

initial depreciation is very high, as noted above mostly because so many come from the UK and vrt is relatively tiny on them, generally a 1-2 year old one can be found for 50-55k easily enough and has the balance of the 3 year UK warranty. After than it eases off as you say. I presume that is why most people here have them. It’s certainly why I moved from 520d to 530e. You would guess a similar level of depreciation on the new model also.

We are all very grateful to any and everyone who buys them new though, as we are waiting on them to come along second hand. Although the new model has some downsides and some possibly quality issues the less compromised boot space, tank size and increased range makes them perfect for me. Unless the m5 depreciates incredibly a 1-2 year old 530e touring will be my next car in 2 years or so.

I’ve not driven the 550e but the x5 50e felt a massive step up from the 530e

    I changed from a 182 530e to a new 550e. There is a massive step up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,234 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

in engine yes - but interior is massive step down IMO and would put me off the new model. Ridiculous strategy from BMW - increase price and take materials out of car and downgrade quality of interior massively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭jayo44

Have to agree I think the interior apart from the seats is inferior to the outgoing model. Dash looks a feels like it's been delivered straight from Ali express. Menu's are over complicated. Steeringwheel is lovely too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

The menus certainly take a bit of getting used to. I'm finding the voice control is very good though - negates the need for some of the menu faffing.

    But the engine… 😁

Nice little addition for the winter and keeping the back clean with the dog. Got them from a member of one of the UK groups in Facebook unused in wrappers

    Question on Servicing.

I have a 192 530e with 157k on the clock , about 60k of that is Electric driving - Most days I would use "max edrive" as the option as my typical trips are manageable on a single charge

My question is around timing chains etc. - When would you need to consider that job on a 530e ?

Do you only count the ICE mileage when considering the interval or how else would you make that determination??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,879 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The timing chain should last for the life of the engine. Should only need replacing if it starts to rattle. The car's idrive should tell you when other things such as engine fluids and filters need replacing too. However if most of your driving is on electric but you want to be cautious then getting the engine oil and filter changed once a year might not be a bad idea. Fresh oil is always good for an engine.

Just as an update to this my granny cable arrived 2 or 3 weeks ago and I’ve been charging it over night I’d say about 4 times- I’ve only just filled the car with petrol after a month so a decent saving in fuel I reckon tipping around. I’d say I get about 55-60 km from a charge- seems to drop faster in town driving and of course it’s been rather cold too. How much does a full charge typically cost?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Anyone out there with a Jap import 330e/530e? What did you’s do regarding the Type 1 charge port? Adapter or buy a full length type 1 cable?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,155 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

The reason it drops so quick around town is the short trips. So every time you get it the car uses the HV battery to heat the cabin.

    What size is your battery?

X kWh multiplied by your electric unit rate to give you an idea of cost to fill. For example, 20 kWh X 20c = €4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭jayo44

The guys I bought mine from got me a full length charge cable and left the bmw one in it too incase I did ever need it.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 17,416 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

    Thanks for that.

I do all the usual oil/filter changes as per the schedule but was just wondering on the timing chain as I know some earlier models of the 5 series had a reputation for issues with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,483 ✭✭✭✭road_high

I’m not sure of the battery size I’m assuming it must be the smallest one. On full charge it tells me 69km range. Yes I’ve notice on longer spins the range drops at a slower more normal rate

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,155 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

69km would indicate bigger than the original. I have the original 2017 one which is 9.2 kWh. In 2020 or 21 they got a 12 kWh battery and slight increases as the cars got facelifted.

If it has the newer style full digital dash that means it has the bigger battery
