Again the above is all just guesswork and ageism at its finest.

I'd happily lose a 3rd of those remaining ~30 games if it sets us up to make the break-through at the World Cup.

I will maintain forever that this is just a completely broken false equivalence. South Africa lost games because they've always been inconsistent and it's why NZ 2011-2015 are a much better team.

I think Boyle and some other backrow should come through cause they'll likely be better now

Maybe start one or more of the likes of Osborne, Izuchukwu or Boyle, if the selectors believe it’d give benefit to the remaining fixtures to get them up to speed.
My fear is Wales will be awful and the team won’t be ready for France if they don’t put in a strong performance, if too many changes disrupt the harmony in the team. Giving Wales a good hiding at least will set the team up well to go into the French match with plenty of momentum and confidence.

I would really like to see Baird Mccarthy and Aherne in the same pack.

Dynamic but where would they be accommodated.

That could be close to the Ireland A second row and 6 if they don’t get into the 23 for the Wales match.
    For example,
    4. Beirne, 5. Ryan and 19. Henderson
    6. Conan and 20. O’Mahony

    Ireland A could be
    4. Izuchukwu, 5. McCarthy and 19. Ahern
    6. Baird and 20. Prendergast

McCarthy in the A team and Henderson in the main squad? Ummmm no

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 839 ✭✭✭bakerbhoy

We are lucky to have athletic young forwards and I am sure there are more not already mentioned.

Grunt and dynamism together is a potential mix.

This particular mix to take the field together , I would love to see.

Ireland were very good in lots of facets of the game at the weekend, but still nowhere near their best or even the standard of a couple of years ago. 3 points to show for a yellow, held up a few times, etc. But it was better than the previous week. They started and finished strongly and never really let Scotland get any purchase on the game, granted losing two of their best players early didn't help Scotland's cause. The schedule is perfect to come really good against France.

Ireland need 5 points and a big win over Wales

if McCarthy needs a full game to prove fitness and build match fitness it might be a good idea to play the A game instead.
Henderson is very experienced, he’s well able to bench against Wales.

If McCarthy needs a game he'll be made available for Leinster at the weekend. There's not a hope he plays for the A team.

He was in the Leinster training pictures today so I reckon he'll play at the weekend.

But sure that team would smash Wales?

btw Murphy has 7 tries in his 9 starts this season.

Murray has what? 7 tries in nearly 55 starts over 5 seasons!!

Murray is not needed for the Welsh match.

Give Murphy a shot for 10-15mins. The game will already be won.

Its a WIN WIN for Ireland.

Chance to blood a real prospect, who will offer a real threat from 9 with real pace.

Ah stop . It's not "ageism" to say that Cian Healy won't be celebrating his 40th birthday in October 2027 as part of the playing group at the world cup.

    It's reality..

I'd love to see new players come in a claim jerseys, but Im not sure the schedule the coaches are on is the wrong path. We have a new front rower getting time, a new out half, and Nash and Baird both playing their way in while Osborne and Frawley have pedigree and experience. Plenty of time for another group to push their way in this season and next. I wouldn't be surprised to see Murphy get a shot but the coaches will be conscious of the risk of a newbie inside SP for any 6 nations match if JGP goes down early.

You actually know this? Can you tell the future? Can you give me the Lotto numbers for next week?

Ever hear the saying records are made to be broken? That applies to age as well, as in the oldest player to represent their country in a world cup.

Succint nail on the head post. I hope all players, especially the young ones, receive education on social media not being a reflection of real life, and the amount of negativity and begrudgery online.

Jamie Heaslip would still play well against Scotland that doesn't mean we should still be looking at him like POM

It is pretty obvious that Easterby has been told what team to pick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,800 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

So he was told to start Baird and leave POM out and then the next week bring Peter back in and start him?

I can't remember Farrell ever doing that.

Agreed. All these clamouring for multiple changes forget that:

    (A) There's a 23 point points difference to be caught up with, which could determine the championship, and

    (B) Ireland never make wholesale changes during the six nations. We generally start our strongest available 15 with maybe one or two alternatives on the bench for the so-called easier games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,796 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Agreed and these changes are not changes for changes sake.

For the record these are the MAIN changes I was talking about:

Boyle, FURLONG, McCarthy, Giving Beirne a rest! Give Crowley & Osborne a start.

The "new players" - Boyle with Ahern and Murphy off the bench.

    Wales 12 v 52 Ireland:

Keenan; Mack Hansen, Gary Ringrose, Jamie Osborne, Lowe; Jack Crowley, Gibson-Park; Jack Boyle, Dan Sheehan, Tadgh Furlong; Ryan, Joe McCarhy, Jack Conan, van der Flier, Doris (capt).

    Reps:

Kelleher, Porter, Clarkson, Baird, Tom Ahern, Jack Murphy, Prendergast, Henshaw or Nash.

That XV would have 3 (4 max) changes for France!

We have a summer tour for Tom Ahern and the likes. We would be mad to risk a championship by experimenting away to Wales

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,045 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Welsh media is reporting that the WRU will use a break clause in Warren Gatland's contract to part ways with him in the summer. If he leaves they want Simon Easterby or Franco Smith to replace him.

I hope Easterby wouldn't be tempted by such an offer. They're in a dire position and if he does well this Six Nations I think he's in pole position to succeed Andy Farrell if the latter leaves in 2027.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

I could be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that Easterby resides in Wales and commutes to Ireland? If that's true it might make perfect sense for him personally to take a role as head coach for the WRU.

I'd agree though that he would ideally stay with Ireland and succeed Andy Farrell after the next World Cup. The stability that would give the whole setup would be very welcome for the next generation of talent blending into the current squad.

Would you not given Milne a run?

I think Wycherley is injured but surely he'd get a shot before Boyle too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭Hey_Ho_Lets_Go_3

Milne is injured and behind Boyle.

I'll happily take that 'risk' of the Leinster pack dismantling Wales pack all by themselves.

With a bit of help from Tom Ahern if needed.

While Beirne sat at home with the feet up (He who has played THE most minutes in Irish Rugby this season!! RISK ALERT!) watching said demolition on tv. Thinking - Ha! & Wales wanted me to play for them!!! (Huge Respect for Wayne Pivac though)

I dont think it will fully register as to how bad this Welsh side is until Ireland play them.

Thinks of the Scottish game/team but with:

    1. A WORSE Pack.

    2. NO Test standard Outhalf.

    3. NO Selection stability.

    4. NO coherent or 'coached' game plan.

    5. NO Wins in 14 Tests.

    Risk?

    I dont think so.

Not sure why Ahern would be leapfrogging Izuchukwu and Prendergast?

Tom Ahern wasn't even in the original squad. He's not going to be in the 23 to face Wales.
