Bit of ego stroking for myself and kicking off this thread for the year.

Was a miserable day out there today, strong wind our of the east, with rain to go along with it.

Didn't know if the course would be open after the Storm Eowyn damage, but I'm glad it was.

Had my lowest 9 hole score ever. -2 for the 9.

Was playing the back 9 in Castlewarden.

Started on the driveable par 4 10th. Went for it and hit it straight down the middle to the heart of the green. Left about an 8ft putt and rolled the Eagle putt in.

Solid drive on 11, 8i to 15 ft and another birdie putt rolled in.

Poor drive on 12. About 185 left in. Hit a nice 7w to about 25ft. Made a 2 putt for par.

Strong wind into on par 3 13th. Tried to Club up and control flight. Left it short. Didn't hit a great chip. Left about 5-6ft. Made a good putt for par.

14th was playing long. Hit a good drive and a solid 3w. Still short. Hit a good pitch to 2ft, made the par.

15th another good drive, 7i in. Another 15ft birdie putt rolled in. Now 4 under through 6.

16th the toughest hole on the back 9. Pulled my drive, so still had probably 240 left. Hit a decent 3w, but into strong wind. Left 60yrd in. Solid wedge to about 8ft and made the putt for par.

Par 3 17th straight into a 2-3 club wind again. Hit hybrid, but not great. Left about a 40yrd approach in. Hit it well, slightly too well, finished above the hole and left about a 12ft downhill breaking putt for par. Just missed it and made first bogey of the day.

Par 5 18th to finish. Hit drive into the perfect spot. Slightly pulled my 7w second, so was blocked my a big low branch. Tried to hit a low draw under it. Clipped bottom of branch, but kept moving. Left about a 25 yrd pitch. Struck it well but it landed and slowed up quickly. About 6ft left for par. Slight over-read and missed high right. Tapped in for a bogey and a score of -2 for the 9 holes.

Playing off 4 for the 9, so 24 points in miserable conditions and my best ever 9-hole total.

Need to hope I can keep it up into the 2025 season

4 over gross for 12 holes. Birdie and 4 pars in last 5.

Lift clean and place on fairways so not getting too excited yet.

Some good work on swing over winter bedding in nicely.

+13 for the 11 holes I got out in Mahon.

Definitely seeing an improvement since I started working on my posture. Had an eagle putt on the 11th, Par 5, which was a real highlight. 5/6 FIR, 3/11 GIR & 22 putts which wasn't horrendous for things.

One wayward drive was badly punished and an approach I took too much club for, take those out and it would have been a great score for someone floating around a 20/21 handicap (according to the Garmin app).

Was out of the country for most of last year so this is my first full season back since being a junior, so hopefully will see some serious improvement over the year.

First full round in months last weekend. Lift, clean, and place so short game was much much easier, but I was very happy with an 81. Lots of found balls in there too, from very unlike places, so I was very lucky but, after barely playing last year, I need all the motivation I can get to start getting out again.

34 points for 14 holes for me in my last winter league round. Very very happy with how I’m playing and like every round, missed a few short putts so could have been better. Played out the round for one of my best gross scores in years. Need to keep this up for the year.

Sounds like Portmaronk Links is going to be torn asunder with all these in form players in a fortnights time. I'll pop along for the day anyway and see what I can learn from you all.

@spacecoyote - that's some way to start a golfing year. Drive a par 4 and hole the eagle putt. And then -4 after 6 holes. If Rory did that in the Masters we'd lose our minds!

have had 2 really good games so far in 2025

started the year and was on course for my best round ever shooting +1 through 14 holes at my home course of Greystones, but that was all we were playing. at that, I really should have been level but for one silly decision on the 13th and I could very easily have been a couple under having burnt the edge on 3 other occasions

last week I played open Tuesday in Castleknock, my away club once again for 2025. playing with half a set of clubs and not my usual putter, I was +2 through 9 and had left 4 putts on the lip. (putter is now for sale on adverts 🤣)

I am really just using some of these rounds now as practice as I've had 4 lessons already this year and am getting a little practice in with some time off work at the moment. I hit the back 9 and had been hitting a lovely draw with my 3 wood all day so played down the right side of 10 but unfortunately I hit it to well and perfectly straight and it hit a tree and went OB to the right. tripled the hole after duffing a chip. solid play followed and was +2 through the next 6 holes, but again leaving putts on the lip and missed a makable 3 footer for birdie on 13. Brain farts on 17 and 18 led to 2 more doubles. finished +11 and not a great result by any stretch of the imagination but genuinely felt like the round was a lot better than that…… like I say though, it's just practice to get the game in shape

31 points for 14 holes in winter league for me today, am loving these forward tees!! Started of with a few pars and for a while I thought I can actually play golf. Greedy second shot on index 2 left me with no shot to green and missed my bogie putt for first double. On 7th I hit my first bad drive and lost ball but parred the second ball for a point. Few sloppy holes but still bogies until I got to index 1. Another ball OOB on right trying to cut corner. Anyone who knows the 14th in Tullamore will know how hard a hole it is, I’ve only got a par once. Missed a putt for a point so only scratch for the round but am enjoying my winter golf.

Really need to keep this going!!

made a silly mistake yesterday that cost me a minor place prize

25 points on our 13 hole comp which should have been 27 except a brain fart on the last hole where I forgot to use a mat with my second shot into the green after flushing a drive down the centre

    2 shot penalty 🤦‍♂️

what I did enjoy about my refund though was I was quite well improved around the green. maybe the shots weren't all great, but the technique was mostly what I was aiming for and I did give myself lot of opportunities to get up and down

Happy with my 25 points in our Sunday 12 hole competition today but what’s really going to be memorable is the 11th hole. While looking for a ball my trolley started to roll down a hill and straight into the lake! Everything soaked, bag was floating in the lake when I got to it and golf glider submerged. Hoping I at least place 😀

6 1putts for me yesterday in team comp over 12 holes.

got up and down from green side 5 times and had 2 other really good chances (should defiantly have made one of them) which is pretty damn good for me, the lessons are paying off.

I'll take that as a win, even if we won feck all 🤣

Played a 9 hole over the weekend and got 18 points.

Shot net par on every single hole. I've obviously had much better scores than this but I've never had a card where I've scored so consistently.

Annoyingly, I managed to find a bunker on 4 holes, so the potential was there for a much better score, but on the flip side the bunkers didn't wreck my score either which is a big positive.

I've been playing pretty poorly over the winter. We are through week 5 of our winter league and I don't think I've broke net par once. Playing off 9 with the forward tees and I am struggling to manage with less shots than this time last year. I could make up loads of reasons like trying to make swing changes etc but really just far too many lapses in concentration. I can go on a run of 5, 6 pars in a row no problem and then have a blow up hole and just stop caring. I need to get out of the attitude though with the season starting soon. I did play in a Champagne Scramble in Esker Hills over the weekend and ignoring the fact it was a scramble of sorts I played much better. It helped that the team was playing well and I had that extra motivation.

The few positives over the winter have been that I've got a new driver and when I don't try to swing out of my shoes, my accuracy and consistency are a lot better and I've pretty much taken a big hook out of play. My approach play inside 120 is also coming on but those mid range shots between 170 to 120 is probably my biggest weakness right now.

Anyone want wedges and a putter?

Wouldnt be reading anything into anything this time of year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭shefellover93

Greens were actually in excellent condition, just my pace control was awful. Was hoping to trend upwards ahead of the first boards outing but it seems like it's going the other way which isn't ideal 😅 Didn't get close on anything inside 100 yards so definitely need to hit the range during the week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Greens will likely be quick compared to what you're dealing with on most parklands this time of year, so be forewarned!

Big putting green near the first tee, so give yourself a bit of time by getting there early and testing the pace.

And sure, look at this way, if you're shooting around the 100 strokes mark at the moment, take pin chasing off the table, on the green and putting will keep you in reasonable shape.

You'll make more 2-putts than you will up&downs

Is Macroom your home course? Heard it's very nice these days, a few years since I played it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭shefellover93

Not my home course but all 18 are open and it's cheaper green fee than my local (Mahon) which has only 12 open.

If I was living that direction I'd definitely go for membership, course is drained well and manages to stay open the majority of the time, back 9 is lovely and they're always sound down there. Greens are in very good condition given all the frost as well

33 points in 14 hole winter league today and yet again, left a few out there, both on the green and off the tee. After a few good rounds with driver, it deserted me near the end of my round today so work to do on that for next weekend. More worryingly, my normally consistent putting has let me down recently. Sank some lovely tricky putts today but missed a few 3 footers. Think it’s in my head at this stage. Three weeks in a row, I’ve 3 putted one particular hole. Need to get it sorted too.

After the highs of 2 under a couple of weeks ago, last weekend had a bounce back to normality with a 5 over for 9 holes. Still 17 points though, so steady golf.

Another good one today, shot level for the back 9 holes. Started with a tap-in birdie. Lipped out for eagle with practically dead-weight shot.

Pushed drive on 2nd, under trees, clipped one on the way out, so needed to get up&down from 60 yards. Hit it to about 8ft, but missed the par putt and made bogey.

After that, it was just a run of pars. Another lip-out birdie putt on 13, and left putt on 15 for bird bang on line but about 3-4 inches short.

Really happy with the golf. Just have to pray I can hold onto some form once some qualifying kicks in

Some shooting Space..anything changed in game ?

    Practice, equipment, lessons...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Took lesson around last October. Mainly focussed around long game. Took most of the winter for it to feel remotely comfortable, but driving the ball better now than I had been.

Switched Driver last year too. Previous one was probably a little too low spin, so a bad one was fall out of the sky hook.

Other than that it's been generally, stick to the process and don't get greedy. Have been taking my medicine when out of position and trusting my game. Has meant my bad holes are more likely to be bogey at worst now.

And probably just a bit of a hot streak with the putter. Yesterday I found like I found my tempo with chips and pitches, so made some straight-forward up and downs.

Would like to get myself into a better place physically, and eke out a few more yards, but that's just on me and the need to get off my ass and put the work in

Add medicine balls to that. Throws and slams are good sport specific exercises. There's a lot you can do without having a fully kitted out gym.

like space above I have been having a hot streak with the putter (and pitching) lately. Not really today though with 36 putts over 18 holes. I had 1 3 putt and some good makable chances but nothing really threatened the hole except 2 really long ones hung in the edge.

I started poor today and put it down to 3 whiskeys last night (first drinks of 2025 after completing dry January 🤣). I was basically awful for 5 holes with 4 scrambled 1 pointers. I think I really only hit 1 good shot in those 5 holes, on the 3rd after dunking the first tee shot in the water. Still no scratches. Started to wake up after an ok-ish tee shot on the 6th and managed to get my first par of the day. From there I was pretty much in control of my game and closed out a 15 hole comp with 32 points. Played the last 3 holes out also and managed to add 3 more pars.

Game in good shape to challenge next week but the main target at Portmarnock will be getting cut.
