Think if we can improve our delivery into the forwards and play with passion we could win this evening handy enough Wexford no great shakes though they will rise their game against us.

It's pretty much the same team that lost to cork by 16 points. Kilkenny have a big advantage in the physical stakes on wexford who are a smaller nippier team.

Surprised niall Shortall is in the squad. Would just have him as a good club hurler. If ballyhale had all their players available that are abroad not sure would he make their starting 6 forwards.

Just to add a bit of positivity for a change. I’ve a nephew on the underage KK squads. They got called into an open night last week with a talk from Michael fennely. About 300 kids and same again with parents, in for a 2 hour talk and they found it brilliant.
They then came away with a very comprehensive booklet showing the 5 man management team of the 9 squads from 14 to Celtic challenge. There is also a 10 person “coaching support” group separate from management.

There’s lots in the booklet about attitude and culture around KK teams. They have the next few months mapped out for the teams. Also a section for businesses to sponsor pages in the booklet. The whole thing is sponsored by Clunetech, and looks to have their professional stamp all over it.
Nothing that amazing about it really, but if you didn’t have someone involved with the team you might be unaware of the good work going on. To me, it looks well thought out and put together.
There’s plenty to complain about in KK at the minute, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

ye I got that last year and I was very impressed with the format and the professionalism of the layout I actually think it should be available to all even if there was a small charge and it seems to me to be putting manager teams in the mix for bigger jobs based on performance.

I'm new to this site and am still figuring it out. I made a mistake. I didn't misrepresent the man as his post is there for all to see.

Barely a breeze down here and the pitch looks in good condition, definitely a lot better then the park last week so no excuses

What do you think at half time @forchange 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭Butterbeans

    Don't feed the troll.

Hard to read too much into this game given how poor Wexford have been so far. We need the 2 points, Kilkenny just need to keep the foot on the pedal.

I don't think we've been very good here at all to be honest. Forwards have been fairly poor other than their tackling. 2nd half has been terrible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,298 ✭✭✭randd1

    We haven’t been.

The ball forward has been poor, and in the heavy ground there’s no bounce. A day to try a bit more of a running game, but we don’t seem capable of it.

Disappointing, especially considering how poor Wexford are.

Why oh why, after losing pretty much every lash-it-long puck out in the last 15 minutes, are we persisting with lash-it-long puck outs?

We have been absolutely septic in the second half.

When we lose momentum we never seem to be able to get in back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭Conversations 3

Similar to the semi final last year, disappointing, kilkenny should have buried them in the second half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,369 ✭✭✭JJs Left Hand

I thought that was fairly terrible. I know there's a backlash in here about people who are always negative but I just don't see it with this group of players especially going forward.

Our midfield was anonymous bar an occasional intervention by Molloy but he had a shocking effort on goal in each half. I don't know what Killian Doyle does. Didn't carry any ball. Didn't catch any ball. Didn't deliver any ball. What is he supposed to be. It can't be just because he's from Emeralds. I refuse to believe thats the reason.

Billy, Mossy and Kenny were fine. Fine. That's it. They're supporting cast but in the current lineups they're being forced to be the main men.

Cody. I don't know. He should be so much better than he is. No score from play? The goal chance has to be hit low. You're supposed to be THE guy in that team.

Donnelly and Shine absolutely irrelevant. We can talk about the ball in but they got no separation from their defenders. Shine has buckets of hurling but I don't know about him at this level. If you can't do much against Eoin Ryan then who can you do it against. He's small and he's not particularly athletic so hard to see him finding a home in the half forward line.

Niall Shortall coming on?? There's no way that's justified. Lyng on in the half forward line??

Our persistence with hitting diagonal ball from deep and it landing in the middle of the field on the 45 so it can be easily broken up. Brainless.

I don't know what my expectations for the team is anymore because it's not an All Ireland but I'm not seeing a good team there.

I know Wexford were awful the first half and had a very young side out

But i thought our tackling aggression and use of the ball was good we even seem to be getting better at throwing the ball like other counties

At least we started todays game better unlike the last 2

The second half is baffling Wexford were always going to play better but once the pushed up abit we went back to the long ball stopped working it across the back and short

It still seems we don’t trust the short game when the pressure comes on

Molloy Kenny Blanchfield and murphy along with Carey were probably the stand outs

Going off tonight I think it will be Kenny and one of molloy or Mac Donald at mf for the championship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭conor05

What that told me tonight is there will be nothing between Wexford and Kilkenny again in Wexford Park when both teams have all their full contingent back for championship in May.

The only difference between the teams tonight was Mossy got in for two goals, that was it.

And we probably had 8 to 10 of our championship starting team out there tonight. How many did Wexford have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 736 ✭✭✭bamayang

Poor oil Billy Ryan never seems to get any luck. Had that shot been a quarter of an inch lower, it would have been the goal of the year. Pulled it down out of the air and then top corner crossbar from 20 yards.

Hard to know who which supporters are happier after that. Wexford showed the form of u21 last few years that there youngsters are ahead of Kilkennys, there half back line was outstanding in the 2nd half. How can we be looking at Deegan wing back, he was lucky in the first half when Bryne skinned him and he didn't know what to do after, also few times in the 2nd half Wexford had a way in down his side of the pitch. He will be roasted again on the wing come summer. If we don't change anything we will get the same results. If they want to play put him somewhere then put him somewhere he wont be exposed for his lack of pace.

Frustrated after leaving Wexford Park tonight, i do not know where we stand, Wexford had a shell of a team out

Wexford will have a decent panel come championship now because their young lads are after getting serious game time in this league albeit they will probably be relegated.

Kilkenny have a 37 year old TJ Reid to come back, Adrian Mullen and John Donnelly.

Will Lyng go with Tallis or Murphy for Leinster Championship?

The number 7 position seems to be between Deegan, Hammond and Mackessy, Deegan was very poor tonight.

Wexford are missing a few from retirements but I think it’s only l ryan chin Mac Donald and j o Connor and one of the recks that are missing through injury or an extended break

J o Connor has never really started to them chin and Ryan have been very injury prone the last few years and macdonald is managing a long term back issue similar to r hogan

Not sure what the story is with k foley

If both teams have everyone back come championship it will be still fairly even

Kilkenny were very good in the 1st half tonight, very aggressive, and huge work rate. Looked like a reaction to the Galway loss. We should have been 20+ points ahead at half time only for some butchered goal chances.

Opposite happened 2nd half, Rossiter clearly told a few home truths at half time and in fairness their work rate and aggression 2nd half was off the charts. Aided by a very lenient and sympathetic referee…

Kilkenny had the match won so understandably dropped their standards slightly, and the result was a very underwhelming 2nd half.

I wouldn't be getting too excited either way really. It's still early February, and every team is in the middle of heavy training. You'd like to see more new lads putting their hands up, but Shane Murphy is a positive, and I thought Stephen Donnelly showed plenty in the 1st half, especially composure wise. Shine is worth persevering with I believe, great wrists, maybe inside forward is not his thing, he might be more productive in space. Deegan form is worrying and you'd wonder what the value is playing him game after game at this time of the year. We know what he has, and we know what he doesn't have. Cian Kenny could work really well at 11 in Championship, there's fair stuff in him.

And no harm getting that Wexford Park monkey off our backs. Bigger tests to come in next few games, that'll tell a lot more than today did.

Tricky one to sum up as Wexford were so poor in the 1st half but improved somewhat in the 2nd albeit never really looked like coming close to us.

On the positive side I thought our backline bar Deegan did well for most of the game. Shane Murphy had a good performance which was a plus and Mikey Butler while not perfect was definitely in better form than recently. Cian Kenny had a good first half and hit some good scores, for a good running game hes crucial. Billy Ryan and Mossy Keoghan were grand bar Billy butchering a goal chance in the 1st half. Cody was a mixed bag, some good play and he definitely made better runs than he usually did but I don't think he's great on frees and he missed one or two of them that he should have scored. Molloy had a fine 1st half but was overran in the 2nd.

The negatives are definitely the performance of Shine and Stephen Donnelly. Donnelly was involved in one of the goals but both of them did nothing apart from that. They also both looked extremely slow and were outpaced by the Wexford backline which isn't a good sign. Doyle didn't do much and he didn't exactly use what ball he got well. Tallis looks shaky under the dropping ball and his puckouts should have been better. He went long too often in the 2nd half when we were losing the puckouts. Deegan was poor defensively and his use of the ball was even worse. None of the subs made a positive impact bar Drennan scoring the last point and when we were lacking pace I don't understand why Ger Dunne wasn't brought on.

Wexford will have the likes of Chin and the Recks back for the championship but there was still a lot of their Championship team out tonight. They will be better but I don't think there is anything to hugely fear from them. We do need to improve but there's still a good few matches to go before the championship.

the big lead at half time led to a very laced second half performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭kentu

Think some are a bit too harsh on Stephen Donnelly considering his 1st game this year and 1st ever start in a senior jersey, showed very well in 1st half set up Mossy's 1st goal and on another day could easily have scored 1-1. Got little to no ball in 2nd half. Certainly well worth another look in my opinion, has a bit of class that some our backup forwards are lacking.

All backs bar unfortunately Deegan played well, i agree with others we don't need to be playing him every game looks like a lad who needs a break as we know what he offers us. Cian Kenny excellent once again. I felt Wexford got a lot of soft frees in 2nd half too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭Conversations 3

The ref was with Wexford in the second half

They highlighted a point along the sideline for Wexford by Lawlor I think, that started with clear push in the back on Doyle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Topcat32

It's like nobody on here has ever seen a league game where the stronger team gets off to a big lead followed by the team who works harder in the second half reigning that lead in and that there is huge surprise that a forward line featuring 4 corner forwards and two others whose game is about getting on breaks around the middle could possibly lose its shape.

Agree with some but not all of that. Mikey Carey was by some distance our best player ,Blanchfield and the full backline did well. Jordan Molloy was excellent in the first half and had a hand in many of our scores in that half. Billy Ryan likewise first half caused all sorts of bother ,robbed of a brilliant goal and made a hames of another. Mossy took both goals well but was lacking the energy of the previous 2 games. I liked Stephen Donnelly in the first half and would persist with him . Eoin Cody could learn a lesson from Conor Whelan tonight about passing the ball to a better placed team mate particularly a newcomer, has been scrooge like all his career, needs to change. Like everyone else I was totally pi**ed off with the second half. However, I walked across the pitch after the game and not right to be playing Senior Inter county on surfaces and conditions like that . Players deserve better.BTW I counted at least 11 KK players unavailable for selection tonight.
