It's the story of the dog, Laika, The story of song.

Visuals like this should be on background screen at E.V , telling the story of the song

I wonder how many dogs in rescue shelters will be called Laika now?

I for one would never watch EV (out of the corner of my eye) if it weren't for the 'human interest' factor of notional popcorn-worthy inter-country pride and disgrace struggles etc, so the idea of it just being a contest for generally inferior 'music' that wouldn't stand on its own in the real music marketplace makes nosense to me

So…how are all feeling this morning a-ba-rum-bum-bum-bum-bum?

    Congratulations to EMMY.

    🙂

And a big ‘boo-urns’ to Patrick for his painfully woeful ‘Dundrum Bum Bum’ and overall snarky tone to proceedings.

    😐

Well that is you and your opinion fair enough, I don't know if majority of audience would agree. But songs written (especially) and singers from other countries pop up in plenty of national finals as well as representing them in finals that is just a fact. Not unheard of having a foreign singer in Eurosong either I remember a very decent one from Sweden in 2015 getting pretty close to winning.

Any truth in the rumour that RTE prefer to trouser big bags of wonga from the taxpayer... and don't want to win the Eurovision as it would expose them to too much scrutiny?

Just popped into my local library, and headed straight to the ‘Irish History’ section.

(You know where this is going).

Perusing the shelves containing dozens of books about Michael Collins, Eamon De Valera and George Bernard Shaw, I couldn’t find a single book about Samantha Mumba.

Therefore, I can only conclude that Donal Skehan grossly over-exaggerated her importance in Irish life, whilst adding a layer of over-excited giddiness because he loves ‘Gotta Tell You’ so much.

I then burnt down the library.

Yes, though when none of the songwiters, nor the singer, seem to have a connection to the country they are representing I think it lessens the potential feel-good factor of a potenial win. "Ah, we did it…but only because there were no Irish involved"😅

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

    LMFHO😀

Just sped-watched the show this morning - I felt this was probably the strongest “effort” in many years at an Irish Euro Song- some good songs and singers - the “performances” were probably a mixed bag have to say but none were a disaster.

Found it strange My Way got so high- I agreed with the judges, it took too long to get there for a Eurovision song - people have very little attention span these days . But as for the winners, it’s catchy, lots of people like dogs, it’s a cutsy story - I just feel it’s a little gimmicky - the song is “light” - will it be enough on the night to pull in the votes needed? It might be - my biggest criticism is it’s a little too light-it would have killed it maybe 15 years ago - not sure about today

But yeah, the songs and singers overall - good performances - some of the presentation less so but streaks ahead of what has been for many years

I missed the first half of this show but when i started watching, i couldnt look away. Yes its a freak show but its escapism. People need a break from wars and politics.

I think Emmy will will make it out of the qualifier group but its not strong enough to win. Niyl was good too.

Nearly choked on my Guinness when the word 'icon' was being used, 'icon't' would be a better description.

Re the voting, only the public vote accurately reflected the songs' merit, she was 2nd last.

Didn't the same happen last year with 'a name', can't remember who, who got top points from the juries but little from the public leading to Bambi's win?

    Jury vote is dodge.

Knowledge is learning something, wisdom is learning from it, intelligence thought of it first.

Who keeps thinking asking foreign rivals to judge our songs is a good idea? The fact they get it so wrong each year is suspect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,497 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

One of the songwriters Larissa Tormey has lived in Ireland for well over 20 years, she is married to an Irish man and is a long term member of the Irish Songwriters Organization. I would call that a pretty strong connection to the country.

The winning song is decent enough but the singers vocals are very weak and seriously autotuned.

Very few of the acts seemed to actually be singing live last night which is a big worry.

So not to weigh in on TLLS Eurovision, I seek PK saying look at how well it has done as part of TLLS, its amazing how one success turns quickly into a win.

I don't really know why RTÉ cann't make this one of the weeks that TLLS is not on the air.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

At a guess- cost. You have a ready show there, a set, a guaranteed audience, a prime time slot - why rent out a theatre pay loads more wages and what not to achieve the same thing? Back when, it was different with the RTE orchestra playing along and the “cult” that was Eurovision - it’s a pastiche of its former self - it can and probably should be only done on a “budget”- it doesn’t really deserve anything more.

Help this old guy, if bambi has a fella what the hell is queer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,544 ✭✭✭RoTelly

There are lots of things that RTÉ pay for that are unnecessary. DG expenses of 21k in six months, 25k in car allowances for the leadership team, flights to NYC 3 times a years for the former DM of News, 50k moving expenses for the former DG, The Toy show the musical and on. At a guess cost is an excuse for not making TV, what they are there to do, lots of things cost money, just depends on your priorities I guess.

Whilst those expenses should also be looked at From a bystander perspective and as a taxpayer I’d rather they didn’t invest heavily in Eurovision- it’s a dead duck and not worth significant investment

OK, I did a little searching, but hadn't uncovered that, which does shift the needle slightly. I know the concept of national representation is a nebulous thing, and can potentially get into xenophobic territory, where I don't want to go😅
