    Hey,

    I'm not really looking for tweaking mods, just advice. Anyone hear of this processor? How good are they? I've only just heard of them today so I have no experance of them

    yeah its called the intel centrino. it has 1mb l2 cache compared to the P4's 512. Longer battery life etc..http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/index.htm?iid=HPAGE+header_products_notebook&#mobiletech

    They're the best mobile chip that intel do at the moment, but you generally pay a premium for them. And oh, they're not offically alowed to tout their power due to some legal reason about promoting MHZ in some other country. Something like that anyway.

    For refernce if I recall correctly 1.7Ghz M > 2.4 Ghz p4m

    Systems built on these chips are only allowed be marketed under the name Centino when they use that line of cpus, the intel wireless chipset and the mainboard chipset afaik.

    Main point is that they are geared for low power use, so you can get 5 hours on a well configured centrino laptop.

    I had a better link on it - http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.html?i=1800&p=2 - But it drops things which use a lot of power for a little imporvement - like the instruction cache. Also parts of the chip are turned off when not in use..

    Now if you could put it in a desktop you might get away with a heatsink without a fan ! - one step towards a quiet pc - get a pair of gigabit ethernet cards and set the HDD to power down and run everything off a remote server and it's a very quiet
