One of my favourite pretty obscure pop acts Kai Bosch (great name) seemingly threw his cowboy hat in the ring for Eurovision for the UK but was rejected.

The song is right up my street! A bit Troye Sivan.

If you don't like it, here's an idea. Don't watch it. Also, don't go into threads dedicated to it and try to annoy posters who do like it.

Some more details of tonight's Eurosong.

Another butchering of Euphoria with a fully defrosted Linda Martin...

And a "judging panel" featuring Donal Skehan (yes really) and Brian Dowlings highly irritating husband.

This is why Donal is in the panel (other than he must be literally living in the RTE canteen) he couldn't beat Dustin...deservedly so based on this sub butlins car crash. They could play it in Guantanamo...

Arthur was great on the panel last year, so I'm glad he's back. He wasn't afraid to give honest opinions and he actually understands what works in the contest. Makes a change from the "sounds just like Adele" nonsense panelists usually come out with.

Saw the LLS line-up last night - had to let my blood pressure drop before typing (currently on a hot-tub break in Snowdonia).

Not to sound like a broken record, but this constant wheeling-out of singers who won Eurovision OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO is both pathetic and embarrassing at this stage.

No doubt, they’ll give Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan their annual wheel-out in May to be asked the same questions.

What are RTE afraid of? Progress? Change? (God forbid!) or The Crippling Cowardice Of Wallowing In Nostalgia For A Time When Ireland Won Eurovision A Lot? Yes, all three.

And Donal Skehan hasn’t been culturally relevant for years, even in the world of cooking!!

At least Laura Fox will hopefully bring some sanity and/or a modern perspective on ESC. Why not have somebody from the always-excellent Eirevision podcast on the panel?

NEWSFLASH, RTE…IT’S NOT THE 1990’S ANYMORE. TIME TO STOP LIVING ON PAST GLORIES. MOVE ON.

Anyhoo, rant over…time for the hot tub.

I don't know how many times I've made this comment, both here and elsewhere, but RTÉ needs to stop involving Linda Martin in our selection. We'll never win again as long as she has any say. Poor Linda, she doesn't realise the contest has changed since 1992.

And, tbh, I've long considered "Why Me?" our weakest winner. Such a shame the BBC wasted Michael Ball's talent on such a bad song (that he himself didn't like.)

EDIT: of course the BBC didn't choose the UK's 1992 entry, the public did. The BBC only preselected Michael Ball…but they should have preselected the song too.

Case in point…three completely out-of-touch ‘critics’ on ‘The Ray D’Arcy Show’ right now judging the six songs.

All sounding like OAP’s on the edge of the dancefloor (‘Well, it’s got a good beat’, ‘It reminds me of Nicole’s ‘A Little Peace’’) - not helped by Ray the Muppet Cheerleader (‘WE’VE WON IT SEVEN TIMES’) playing snippets of Eurovision songs from the 70s/80s. 😐

Gee, I thought the dip in the hot tub would improve my mood! 😁

Re the first post, Ireland won 7 times in total. This included 4 times in the 1990s, including 3 in a row. I notice that Eimear Quinn, our last winner way back in 1996, is never asked to contribute to these programs as far as I can see. For years, Ireland held the record for the most wins, until some years ago Sweden managed to equal it and then eventually break the record! That was always likely to happen given the lapse of time.

Re the second post, it should indeed be about the song and not the singer. I think that could apply across all the countries taking part.

Regarding Eimear Quinn…she is married to the DG of the EBU, so perhaps she feels it would be inappropriate to get involved in a country's selection process. She might also be self-aware enough to know that perhaps the winner of the 1996 contest isn't the best person to help a country win the contest in the 2020s.

Linda Martin, meanwhile, will still be popping up on TV when she's 99, insisting she knows what it takes to win Eurovision. In a shame she can't stay away from involving herself, to many she's just a laughing stock now.

An article on RTE about 1995 Eurosong runner up Naoimh Penston... was nearly subbed in due to plagiarism concerns.

I remember this happening, and (to me anyway) Dreamin' was clearly plagiarised from that Julie Felix song. RTÉ must have been thrilled, because they didn't want to win again, so sending a song with allegations surrounding it was always going to go down like a cup of cold sick with the juries.

Interesting how the EBU left it up to RTÉ whether to disqualify the song or not. The EBU is far more involved these days, and I imagine it'll be their call should something similar happen again.

    Happy Eurosong day!!!

Normally it is usually between 2 or 3 songs that I could see winning but this year I literally haven't a clue who is going to win. I'm not sure who I actually want to win either. Best of luck to all 6 acts and may the best one win.

    Running order for tonight

    1. Adgy – «Run into the Night»

    2. Bobbi Arlo – «Powerplay»

    3. Reylta – «Fire»

    4. Samantha Mumba – «My Way»

    5. NIYL – «Growth»

    6. Emmy – «Laika Party»

Weird to put Bobbi so early, but with only six songs hopefully it won't matter too much.

Bambie won from second last year so fingers crossed.

From the RTÉ Archives, a behind-the-scenes look at Eurosong '89, the last time we selected an entry for a Swiss Eurovision.

    https://www.rte.ie/archives/collections/news/21320220-euro-song-89-rehearsals/

A few weeks later in Lausanne, we had what was then our worst-ever result. Hopefully, history won't repeat itself in 2025.

Yikes Reylta made a hash of answering this question....

I don't think it will be an issue anyway the song is meh but still.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Methinks she doesn't want to answer because she knows she'll go to Eurovision if picked tonight. Bit of a hypocrite I think, just like Erica Cody last year.

Either way I don't think she'll have worry about making a decision, her song is poor enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 tradfan1

I don't know how people can vote for her after this! In reality it looks like we have 5 songs competing - extremely unfair of her to enter 'for the craic' as she so 'eloquently' puts it and not to answer the question re her participation if she wins, hypocritical to say the least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭LordBasil

Yeah, bad form from her indeed. I think 'Fire' is a decent song it just runs out of steam after 2 minutes although it might come across better live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭supereurope

If she wins (unlikely) and then goes to Basel, she's a massive hypocrite. Having signed that letter last year, it just looks so bad that she put herself forward for this year.

Imagine if she went to Basel, then dramatically pulled out right before the semi as a boycott, we'd be left with no Irish entry.

I think we're not looking at a serious competitor among the bunch.

The songs don't say anything. Samantha Mumba's song is all about how she's free to do/say/think what she wants, and says nothing about what she thinks of does. Just seems self indulgent nonsense.

Similar to most of them. Not specifically about any identifiable theme. Nothing you can hang your hat on.

NIYL song Growth is pure nonsense. Have you seen the lyrics? Barely a song or a tune.

Adgy probably the pick of them. At least its about a specific theme.

Others might disagree, but I don't think it's about Ireland winning, or coming close to winning, right now. It's about us getting better-quality entries to our national selection, sending better songs to Eurovision, becoming a regular qualifier and being spoken of positively at the contest after years in the doldrums. Then we can start talking about being a serious competitor again.

Look at the Netherlands or Switzerland, both countries that had years of terrible results (the Netherlands has the record for the longest non-qualification streak). In 2013 (NL) and 2019 (CH), they started making more of an effort, getting more credible artists involved, getting better results and putting themselves on the path to victory, which they both achieved after a couple of years. That's where we should be, improving our results and reputation, and building on our top 6 finish from last year. We don't need any more than that right now.

On record for me the Bobbi Arlo song is an obvious pick. But some posts on twitter about her losing her voice...not great...

I do think the Emmy song has something though and is catchy so looking forward to it live.

Gotta say, ADGY’s song has really grown on me - something about that ‘Celtic Fiddle’ riff.

Makes me want to stand on top of the Cliffs Of Moher whilst swinging a badger above my head.

Hopefully, ADGY will incorporate badger swinging into his performance tonight.

    As it stands…Mumba Jumpa!

Christ alive I'd have had Bobbi Arlo a the bottom near Niyl. And the only one i thought was good is at the bottom. Shows how much I know.

We'll see how it works out but I think Adgy is the only one that even might qualify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,396 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I don't think Bobbi's vocals will be an issue or that it will cost her the win. I could see her do well if she gets to Basel - the song is impactful right from the opening bars and she has a cool image.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭supereurope

A few people have said that Samantha coming out and defending Louis Walsh could cost her votes, but it doesn't appear that has happened. Disappointing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,510 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

Genuinely don't know how to call this one.

At least last year, it was blatantly obvious who the clear favourite was.

The artists are really going to have to put on a memorable performance.

Bobbi is the only likely qualifier IMO (provided she can pull off the performance).

Others could make it but it would be borderline. Adgy wouldn't have a hope, the song is nice enough but goes nowhere and would be completely forgotten about.
