What's the most you would spend on Done Deal?

I've 20k to spend on a second hand car. Dealers don't have what I want or are over budget. So looking to buy private. Would you spend 20k on a private sale?

    Just spent 16.5k private.

Had I a budget of 20K it would have been the same gig.

I didn't any difference between a chain-link fence type dealer and a private sale tbh.

[edit: wrong: a chain link fence dealer knows nothing at all about the car. He could have bought it at auction yesterday. You can't interrogate a chain link fence dealer]

Tip: people buy off people so the primary work is ascertaining the person your buying from. Not the state of car. That comes second...

Main/reputable dealers - fair enough but you'll pay a premium for a warranty that's worth it in my view

    NB:

In case you didn't know, Toyota/Lexus do a 1yr warranty on cars less than 10 yrs old, even if they haven't been main dealer serviced up to that point. Get the seller to subject it to that (strike a deal: you pay of it clears / you both go halfs if its doesn't) and you have a lot of peace of mind.

They won't warranty pre existing conditions, so the service will tell you whether there are pre existing conditions! Doesn't have to be main service, just minor oil and plugs. They'll still put it through a serious test. Have the battery checked if hybrid.

If the seller ain't game then why not?

    Maybe other brands do similar?

PS: Google Maps Streetview is good for checking is that dealer there since last night (if coming across a dealer who has something you want) or for a number of years. Just go to it in streetview then roll back the years to previous versions.

Delta Cars on the Naas Rd (for instance) got turned up noses on here "anything on the Naas Rd is fly by night - poo!"

Streetview had them there since 2009 or something...

Also important is having a decent, knowledgeable mechanic look at it. I didn't have a decent mechanic I'd trust prior to this but made sourcing one part of the process.

I've scribbled some about the process of establishing the vendor is sound (in short: (friendly, firm but fair) interrogation of lots of vendors. It exposes you to lots of lies, ducking n diving and implausible excuses.

If you expose yourself to enough lies and then come across a genuine seller, the truth will ring true. Don't underestimate your own ability to spot truth & lie.

You just need to calibrate your truth/lie detector to the realm of a private sale!

I'm on my third car and have always bought private and have never been disappointed. At 16K though I spent a little more time calibrating...

Just bear in mind that you have no consumer protections when you buy a car privately (on done deal or otherwise). If the engine fails in a weeks time, you will have to resolve at your own cost.

I have bought many cars privately, and I would happily do so again. But you need to do your due diligence carefully and they should be at a notably lower price than if you were to buy it from a firm in the motor trade.

Its one thing having consumer protection. Another thing invoking it.

Main / reputable dealer is one thing, those side of the road fellas another.

Done Deal is returning a lot of NI cars. I'm just scrolling past them as I have no idea what VRT etc. would be due.

Is there a rule of thumb for a rough approximation?

    e.g.

what would you feel the lower price should be? 10/15?%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,622 ✭✭✭monseiur

Can't help you on the VRT / VAT but if the car is a recent import from UK you'd be better off buying in the UK - same VRT etc but a much better selection & perhaps higher spec.

Regarding buying private - I have bought a no. of cars this way here and in the UK - would never dream of buying off a dealer or SIMI garage (rip off merchants)

I’d say if you got it 10% less you would be doing ok.

Not according to Toyota /Lexus. Some kind of welcome back to the fold - all is forgiven outreach. One small service and you're in. Years warranty.

Word is to clear out diagnostic faults and drive 600km before service. Old faults, even if rectified will see exclusions added - preexisting issues not covered.

Its a good deal seems like.

It definitely doesn't apply to the hybrid battery or associated hybrid system

I'm on my 3rd Lexus hybrid and all were bulletproof when it came to the hybrid systems. Other minor niggles yes, but not the hybrid.

Paid 20k for a 5 year old Rav4 back in 2021 (private sale) on Done Deal but exercised due diligence pre purchase - Motorcheck report and had a Mechanic to check it over. Jeep also had 12 months NCT on it. Estimate i saved @ 2k vs dealer purchase. Still driving it 4 years later and has never given me any problems.

My young lad sent me a link to a car he was looking at, dealer near the airport.

When I checked the location on Google maps, it showed 7 different car dealers registered at the same yard. Should I be suspicious??

Don't fancy handing over €15k to some fella that''s going to close down the next week and start trading under a different name.

I haven't looked through (or interpreted) the T&Cs in any great detail ...but hybrid and EV components are in there.

€250 oil & filter service on a 9 yr old Lexus and you a pretty comprehensive 1 year warranty.

    Colour me impressed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭protexblue

I started out looking that way but came to figure "what benefit?" These dealers could pick a car up at auction yesterday and have no clue as to its condition

The 3 month warranty bit, typical of these traders didn't inspire me

You could try Solocheck to find out how many years trading. Or scroll back the years on Google Streetview to see if the trader has been there years.

Some come across better than others but I went private in t'end. You (unlikely a pro) can gauge a private seller better than you can a dealer any day.

Pay with a bank draft and buy it on a Friday. Takes 3-5 businesss days to clear. Gice you time to really check the car.

Cancel the draft if not happy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,323 ✭✭✭User1998

Thats a ridiculous idea. And potentially fraudulent.

Can a bank draft be cancelled without surrendering it ?

    Not your ornery onager

Au Cointreau Rodney, its a very good idea. You see, the seller ends back up with a car they said was running fine but turned out not at all to be.

And your money lives to fight another day .

Would not the fraudulant claim "mechanically and electrically in perfect order" constitute a part of the contract of exchange?

I've found judges to be pragmatic, reasonable types. A serious flaw discovered in the days following a purchase, one that would be difficult to detect with a brief, pre-purchase mechanics inspection, would find a sympathetic hearing, I'm inclined to wager.

In any event, possession is 9/10ths of the law. I'd take the riskof landing in court vs. letting some deceitful gouger have it away with my hard won cash.

I'm also inclined to suppose a deceitful gouger might think twice about the prospect of standing before a judge trying to explain his false claim. Far easier for them to just cast a hook for the next unsuspecting punter.

Looking at it pragmatically, its not a bad approach.

Bank said it takes three to five working days to clear a draft (iirc, that was when buyer/seller used different banks.

So: buy on a Friday evening. And give the car a good run and exhaustive check out over the weekend (or bank holiday weekend, as I did).

Yup. I checked. All you need is the receipt they give out with it.

    I sold a car privately in 2006 for €30k.

It was under 12 months old and had a manufacturers warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭protexblue

And in further good news (for those sub 10yr old Toyota / Lexus owners who want to avail of a 1yr warranty for the cost of a minor oil/filter tyoe service: that warranty moves with the car.

So if buying a car with that warranty, you get the remainder of it.

Probably add to the value of the car if you were selling it with manufacturers warranty.

Then again: existing conditions discovered during that warranty obtaining service aren't included in the warranty.

So either clean bill of health (= added sales attraction). Or issue identified and excluded from warranty + issue now known to the buyer (which is a good/ bad thing depending on your morality as a seller)

I'm sure it did. All I was saying is that folk can avail of 1 yrs warranty when selling a 9yr old Toyota or Lexus.

Maybe other marques offer that kind of deal? Sounded good to me.

Mines late 2016 so later this year, in for a 250 quid service and with luck a years warranty on the whole thing.

    Great value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,700 ✭✭✭kermitpwee

I have had a proper look, you are correct Toyota do the Relax warranty on the car, it has to have less than 185000 kilometres also.

    Apologies 👍

I was confusing it with the 15 year warranty toyota/lexus give on the hybrid battery if you have full service history with them.

    What car did you buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭protexblue

    No worries

No worries. 2016 IS300h first reg sept 2016 with 127K km up.

Lovely drive (stepping out of an 07 A4!)

But I'm it for the alleged reliability. With 2nd hand prices these days and my tendency to resent even putting petrol on a car, i intend to repurpose this car as my coffin come the time

    Model for this warranty!
