What do you think Netanyahu is going to do with the 2000lb bombs that Trump has resumed export licenses for?

To be fair to Arab Americans it was like voting for kang or kodus. Look at the bigger picture, America is extremely polarised red or blue. Blue let Israel destroy it and happily supplied weapons and directly provided air defence. Red now might let them conquer what's left. I say might because it's speculation.

Exactly - Given the people who he wants in change of the DOJ and the FBI , who knows what happens.

Lets say the Dems get their act together and have a blow-out performance in the mid-terms and on paper at least retake the House and Senate.

Does anyone think for a second that Trumps DOJ and FBI wouldn't begin investigations into spurious allegations of "election irregularities" to over-turn enough results for the GOP to hold on to control??

The current purge of the Federal government is designed for exactly this purpose - Anyone that does not show complete and utter obedience and fealty to Trump will be long gone before November 2026.

There will be no one left that will stand up and say "That's illegal , you can't do that" as there was in November/December 2020

    Laughable.

The name 'USAID' brings to mind fresh-faced college graduates handing out sacks of rice in the Congo, doesn't it? When in reality, it's paying for Denise Chaila to lecture us on the national broadcaster. The rot is deep.

Marco is all in for it as well. How they will try and proceed is anyone’s guess. America is going rogue big time. That’s what they wanted. Only waiting to see how high a tariff they’re going to put on e.u to screw us as well.

at least 3.5 million valid votes were not counted due to widespread election fraud instigated by the red states policies to disenfranchise likely democrat voters. (Minority voters were especially targetted)

    Phase 1
Millions of votes 'challenged' or purged from election registers resulting on voters being given 'Provisional ballots'

    and phase 2

Millions of 'provisional ballots' simply thrown away.

Democrats should have raised hell over this, but they were too busy being 'the adults in the room' while the fascists taking advantage and breaking every convention and rule they could get away with

I don't think this is the gotcha you think it was, firstly a tiny sum. Secondly was not a "DEI Musical". It was an Other Voices concert.

    https://www.othervoices.ie/news/other-voices-and-the-u-s-embassy-dublin-come-together-for-dignity-a-glorious-celebration-of-the-music-of-ireland-and-the-us-this-september

Meanwhile conveniently ignoring Trump just endorsing ethnic cleansing.

It is obvious now where the ceasefire came from. Netanyahu was told this was the plan. Stop the bombing to give Trump the appearance of being a peacemaker and then have everything the Israelis wish for handed to them. And not only that, the US is going to pay for it.

Hamas had little option but to accept. No doubt they were given assurances and promises which last night were completely crossed.

So Trump has now just announced that he is in favour of taking over foreign sovereign land, displacing millions of people to be immigrants in other countries (but certainly not the US as it's only for Americans and hates foreigners) and will continue to support Israel fully and completely. He had no one word to say about the killings by Israeli defence forces. The lack of aid, and the control of foreign media.

A POTUS is completely and totally in subjugation to a foreign leader. This is the 'strong' leader people were tricked into supporting.

We in the EU are indeed in for being bounced around. It will take a lot more than strongly-worded parliamentary speeches to take on Trumpism. Unfortunately, most of the Western World - among whom is Ireland with our insincere, mealy-mouthed, peace-loving gobshite posturing of a country which has convinced itself it is sufficiently well-insulated from any invasionary threats - had cynically and lazily cut back on military spending over decades and left it all to the Americans. The madness of this penny-pinching has now become apparent. Trump only respects a counterpart who he regards as a military peer.

A couple of years ago I visited the Panzermuseum in Germany. At the museum's entrance there is a quotation which reads: 'If you want peace then prepare for war!' It stuck with me at the time and it now really has begun to make sense.

We cannot yet know what will happen, but anyone who entertains the thought that Trump is only talking tough is very seriously deluded. He is an absolute existential threat to us all.

Yes, but would the 3.5 million votes have been in states where they would make the difference between a Harris and Trump victory? In 2024, Trump got much the same total vote as in 2020, but Harris got several million fewer than Bdien in 2020. This apprears to have happened in both Blue and Red states. Don't go down the same "stop the steal" rabbit hole as the Republicans. Also, Harris didn't do so well among male voters - put that down to mysogyny if you want, it has little to do with voter suppression.

MAGA is a transaction. It gives his supporters the satisfaction of seeing other people suffer and it gives Trump largely unfettered power over the most powerful country that has ever existed. They only consider him strong in that he just says whatever he wants.

Trump will declare a state of emergency and suspend elections, and because America will already be at war on multiple fronts, he'll get away with it
Unless there can be mass uprisings from within the US.

We're 3 weeks in. He's already begun to populate his concentration camps for migrants in Guantanamo bay, He's announced his Gulags in El Salvador where political prisoners can be disappeared never to be seen again…

To quote game of thrones - honour comes easy when there is no cost involved.

Puffing your chest out when you cant really be touched is one thing. Doing it to the Americans when they could economically destroy the country is another. Lets not kid ourselves, Martin will (most likely) get his trip to the white house and he will kiss the ring just like everyone else.

This nonsense again- if I don’t call Trump a rapist, then I’m a rapist myself - I’m not going there - I had enough of that rubbish in the election thread

There is another post where you have a chance to call out Trump's comments for advocating ethnic cleansing and you transparently dodge it.

It's a thread about Trump. We're discussing Trump's comment calling for permanent resettlement of Gazans. That is advocating ethnic cleansing.

Now having gone so far down the defend Trump road, you now find yourself having to give him a free pass on ethnic cleansing too.

So what would you call someone who doesn't criticise Trump for advocating ethnic cleansing, but instead praises him for being off to a great start and fulfilling his election promises?

You can keep dodging, but next time you post along such lines, it will pointed out you are praising ethnic cleansing.

Yes, most of the corruption took place in swing states controlled by republican governors.

If every valid vote was counted, Harris would have won with a very significant majority and the Democrats would almost certainly control both houses of government

Can't be done. They held elections in the middle of the Second World War.

I remember Kenny's trip over when he not too subtly called out Trump's racism while the president just stood there like a kicked cur. No ring will be kissed.

That's quite an ancient quote, going back to 4th / 5th century Rome.

There are a couple of other quotes that are equally germane

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.” H. L. Mencken

"A standing army is like a standing member. It's an excellent assurance of domestic tranquility, but a dangerous temptation to foreign adventure." Elbridge Gerry, 1787

Trump is obviously a unique level of stupid / evil, but so much of what he and 'MAGA' represents is the status quo American political way - just more overt and crude about it.

America is always an openly interventionist country that wants to bend the world to their will and will happily indulge in any number of war crimes to get their way. In a just world, Biden and now Trump would be before The Hague along with Nethanyahu.

American politicians are 'corporations first' and will always, aggressively prioritise corporate interests over the people who vote for them. This couldn't be made any more literal than giving the richest man on earth the seemingly unfettered keys to the public coffers.

American politicians are chronic hypocrites - supposedly dedicated to free speech and the rule of law, but immediately happy to disregard both to punish their ideological enemies or simply if it's temporarily inconvenient to their goals.

The difference with Trump is he takes those to new, ludicrous extremes and is stupid / evil enough to say them out loud. But that's not to let the 'moderate Democrats and Republicans' off the hook either. They deserve every bit of scorn they get for their complete inability to respond to the various crises of their own making. The whole of American politics is rotten to the core - Donald Trump is just the ultimate, horrifying personification of it all.

a brilliant summary but what intrigues me is how MUTE Von Der Leyen, Kallas, Rutte etc etc have become. The EU and NATO are leaderless and rudderless, unfortunately!

It was predictable - everything Trump has said since before the election and now is extreme and exaggerated - he does it because he has no opposition - the Democrats are lost in the wilderness and have no idea how to respond to him - they are leaderless and directionless.

Placing value judgements on what Trump says is pointless at this late stage - we expect him to say such things and he’s supported by 70+ million Americans which is a frightening thought - but this is nothing new - posting outrage every second post achieves nothing in this discussion forum and questioning people who don’t is just idiotic. I’m more interested in discussion around alternatives, challenges, what the response might be from the Arab world, how what he said may escalate more terrorist attacks - but no, instead it’s “reds under the bed” paranoia responses - if I don’t post hate speech about Trump I must be a supporter of him. I’ve no interest in being forced to state x or y just to appease certain posters - they don’t own this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Even some Trump supporters in this thread have expressed horror in relation to his concerned. Your responses since the moment of his remarks has been defending or downplaying it. You've been entirely unwilling to recognize that he just announced a US policy of ethnically cleansing a region.

I am just asking if you thought it was evil what he said.

I have agreed and debated a lot of things with you up to election and was never hostile towards you.

    Its a really simple question.

Well, it doesn’t rank 55th on the Press Freedom Index and as a flawed democracy in the Democracy Index for nothing, facts that are completely ignored by US commentary. (And those rankings are for 2024..)

Can you imagine if we ranked that low? We’d be going around utterly mortified with the embarrassment, but they just wrap themselves in a flag and shoot the messenger. “They’re probably commies or liberals … or overseas…”

They’ve no ability to see themselves in a mirror — or when they so it’s a rather flatteringly patriotic one and that’s been a huge part of the rapid slide to where they are now. Everything is just wrapped in more and more exceptionalism.

Even the way they keep going on about “this wonderful spectacle of the peaceful transition of power” every fecking presidential election, as if everyone else in the world has a civil war every 4 years to decide on who runs the country, and ignoring the fact that 4 years ago they had an insurgence trying to physically take control of their legislature!

    H. Arendt’s point about the banality of evil springs to mind, but it’s a step up seeing Trump and Netanyahu sitting there as relaxed suited & booted leaders of state casually discussing the wipe out of a country as a benefit to all.

    A super Trump solution.

Follow that by the dead in the eyes nodding heads in agreement across social media.

The new normal: casual evil with an official stamp. I don’t think I can say WTAF enough today.
