the first clip of the mound out the back showed all the dirt piled up against where the grotto was. didnt look like it was going to be kept. could be put away for safe keeping but i doubt it

A grave, grave episode. They did not deserve this. The black facade looked grim and contrived. One thing to paint a large three story house black, would not be my taste but entirely something else to paint one of these little cottages so dark. Dermot should know better.

Someone above said they’d spent 620 so far on it. Would they get that back if they sold it now considering the area? Further screwed in that they’re now selling a 2 bed.

When the water problem was discovered they should have ditched the energy upgrade, tanked it, built their extension and come in under budget, then sold it on to some other poor fool.

Considering it’s all been televised are they left holding a hot potato? I wonder do they feel Dermot’s done the dirty on them or just heads in the sand. My impression was little lad could see writing on the wall and big lad was head in sand.

As it happens, there's an ad for a similar cottage in Dublin 7 featured in the Irish Times today - was a 3 bed, now a 2 bed, extended and made over. Asking price is 695k

it’ll easily enough be worth that and maybe a lot more in a few years. Not the best ‘area’ but they are in a great little spot on the right side of the canal beside cloud cafe, da mimmo and cusacks. 1km up the road in Fairview and Marino it’d be worth a lot more, but where it is, considering it’s properly finished and work done it’d be snapped up v nearby houses 1-200 cheaper with all the unknowns they bring. Even getting builders to work on those awkward streets is a nightmare.

Was a bit disappointing to see the cheaper patio doors with massive white frames etc compared to what they saw in house they visited but needs must, we had to do the same and always regret it, but it was just not affordable.

Really hope that’s the case and a recession doesn’t arrive.

Ours was wood clad or whatever that is. Mine went rotten in back as south facing, others went rotten in front.

    Dreadful quality.

Ive no idea why anyone would go on it bar publicity.

Bannon is a condescending know it all. A snob.

He is all fur coat and no knickers. Telling the structural engineer guy to know to stay in his lane, what an obnoxious man.

Its their money and their house, he is only a paid hand at the end of the day and shouldnt be trying to railroad in his half baked ideas.

Surely a structural engineer could redesign the house himself and then have an architect finalise the design, I dont understand why people let Bannon have carte blanche.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

that was a horrible thing to say.

it really makes me think something went on behind the scenes for him to say that

Surely a structural engineer could redesign the house himself

I know they said he was an 'engineer' but did they specify 'structural'?

Either way, he bought a house that had major issues and even after living in it for 2 years, he still had no concept of the problems that were lurking beneath the surface, so I wouldn't say he has the necessary qualifications.

I do wonder if that's the case though. The show could have easily been cut to make it seem as thought the water was something unexpected. I suspect an engineer would be aware of the risks, but maybe was hoping they would get lucky? It would be pretty bad form if he did mention it to Bannon and it never made onto the show.

Yes he is a structural engineer, it said it in all the press releases.

Good to see a same sex couple creating a lovely home and life for themselves. And great to see this on national television. I was also struck by the teacher telling his pupils about his home life with another man.

You get free advice and architechts plans from dermot

People in this country have lost the run of themselves. Pure notions.

Spending practically 400k on a house and then spending another 250k+ and it not even finished.

When the next crash happens, these are the people the taxpayers are going to be bailing out while we're told 'we all partied'

I think there's a lot of people who bought/renovated in the past year sweating at night thinking of Trumps Tariffs. We really need a wake up call in this country and people taken down a notch or ten.

I got the impression it was time constraints rather than budgets that had the house unfinished. Dermot, the clients and the builder all referred to the house being completed "in a few weeks"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,615 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Why didnt they just delay the broadcast date, I think they did this for a delayed build in a previous series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,128 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

This is 100% the case. Wouldn't be suprised if some builders/suppliers are only breaking even. I looked for a quote from a builder who was on room to improve last season and the quote for what I wanted which was significantly less work than what they did for the show was still way more. If you didn't mind being on TV and could get through the coco television selection process it's well worth it financially I reckon.

Private home owners haven't been bailed out in any crash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,077 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

That's incredibly bitter. People don't get to control the market, they only get to participate. They need houses to live in and sadly have to accept the costs of them. If someone has to spend 600k to get a house and make it livable then thats what they have to do.

Construction work, particularly the type that's on this show is pure robbery in Dublin. If there ever was a reason to go on this show is that contractors seem to price "keenly" to get on it and at least don't drive the boot in on extras.

They will be next time, guarantee it. Already saw them getting mortgage interest relief.

They had a house to live in, they paid 400k for it.

But it's not enough, they need to live like a king and get indebted up to their eyes for it.

All their savings is gone, in heavy debt for the next 30+ years.

These are the type of people that the next crash comes, will be in the papers crying victim about the amount of debt they have.

Developers speculating in the celtic tiger were just participants in the market of the time too.

Looked like Bayview Avenue, or one of the parallel roads between Ballybough/North Strand. This is smack bang between the Royal Canal and the Tolka and has always had a high enough water table. Anyone with a sub-ground floor portion of the house around there is well aware of the flooding/water risks. The two lads' engineer's report should have flagged it. Larger than normal rainfalls usually means an influx of water rats for anywhere that is dry and accessible.

Place is always prone to high tides, excess rains and flooding in general. The entire area surrounding the street was flooded for weeks in 2002. There were news reports all over the place at the time. The house on last night's episode is about 3 mins walk from the location at the start of that programme. I even found a report (.pdf) on it just now that talks a bit about it.

With your amazing ability to guarantee the future, I'd have thought that you'd be too busy buying lotto tickets and investing in the markets to be posting here?

    You're speculating mate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,077 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Live like a king? Both the house and the extension were very modest in size.

The issue is that you cant get a tradesman to get out of bed for less than a grand. I was quoted €1600 (+vat!) to fit an outdoor plug located the other side of the wall from the consumer unit.

If they were doing what they did in 2018, it would have been between 1/3 and 1/2 the cost.

He's a demon for spending everyone else's money. He gets a raging hard-on when budgets go bang, as long as it's not his own money.

Each episode would be about 10 mins shorter if he just STFU and stopped trying to force his BS ideas on those who are splashing the cash and paying his fees. The nonsense about the upstairs fireplace last night is a prime example.

"I think it looks great, are you keeping it?

No, probably not (read: definitely not), it takes up too much room and we'd never use it, house is already tight for space as it is

    Ah, but it looks great……..

Yeah, but it's pretty impractical and we'd never use it and….

    C'mon…..just look at it…….

I'd rather look at a wardrobe for all my clothes, thanks"

Edit to add: The sheer irony of him telling others to 'stay in their lanes' had me wiping coffee up off the floor. The chap is a walking, talking lane shifter who thinks he knows everything about everything.

Yeah when I looked up where boho hairdresser was...as there was a shot of that at the top of the road.....I thought Bayview avenue too.

It's a lot of money spent in an area I wouldn't class as overly safe tbh. However it obviously met their requirements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,387 ✭✭✭thereiver

they spent alot of money removing tonnes of earth and hiring skips to deal with drainage problems and improve the stability of the walls this is the exception to most programs eg they had massive problems to deal with before they could start building the extension and the kitchen

i wonder did they get a survey before they bought the house

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 Bookmarker_n

"It's like a hotel" was their own words. How many people say that about their own house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,615 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

He is indeed a demon for spending other peoples money. He is compassionless when there are budget concerns.

He never tries to think outside the box like George Clarke or other tv architects.

That black kitchen was horrific and the idea to have the kitchen take up two floors in such a small house was ridiculous.

Don’t believe those roads were affected in 2002, that was highest tide in 100s of years, so east wall, sandy mount, clontarf etc was underwater but it was mostly closer to Tolka in Drumcondra that was affected. Issues on bayview appear to be more local related to the older sewers and drains leaking in the area during heavy rain. Certainly it’s far from ideal to have half of the house below an already low lying road level though. Would hope they heavily reinforce the back garden as it looked like the plan was to leave it sloped up away from the house.
