Broken chip in Passport

My passport has a broken chip inside it, which means it doesn't work in the automated machines. I've also had a couple of cases recently of being grilled at passport checks due to this (just flying within the EU), I guess because it caused some suspicion that it might be counterfeit.

However, aside from this, I have been able to continue travelling with it without any major issues. I've looked into renewing it and it seems you have to send your damaged one back before they'll send you a new one, which would leave me entirely without a passport for a period of time. Does anyone know how long I'd be left without one, is it the same as a full renewal from scratch? I travel a lot for work so I can't afford any real gaps in my access to a passport any time soon.

I had the same problem. You just get the balance that's left on the passport eg. if your passport is already 6 years old you get a 4 year passport. I didn't have the passport replaced in the end. Wasn't worth the bother.

You could get a credit card size passport card that can be used for travel within the EU and UK and then use that while you get your full size passport book replaced.
