Would be a few agents for factories in the North buying cattle around here. Young cows seem to command a premium with these lads or fit over 30 months cattle.

Young cows are killed as heifers up there no access to our recors system. Manufacturing beef is a big thing in tge UK, school meals, prisons, hospitals, canteens in manual employment factories etc

Another factor no ones talking about is big three which have controled the kill price up to late last Autumn have lost control. The margin between the UK and Irish price was the greatest probably ever. Thus the margins was very good. It allowed flexibility for the smaller plants to go that extra bit which they didn't have or allowed to have before. Take Foyle has a margin of 5 per cent despite paying weekly up to 10c more for cattle. If a small operation had 3 percent they were doing well. That's the cartel greed for you.

It's a bit more than that the beef processors sit in a tight circle starting in Watford come to Cahir, Watergrasshill, Bandon, back to Charleville, Rathkeale and Nenagh after that there is a gap to Ballyhaunis and Ballinrobe before yoturn sharp south towards the factories in Westmeath. Foyle in Donegal is an outlier and it's absolutely no good to anyone unless you are north of Galway.

The big 3 rule the roost around the southern, southwest edges

I know it's no good to most of the country, hence the ten cent and even at that its not worth it. But my point is paying 10c for 2 years and achieving 5 per margin is some achievement.

Large companies work on a 20+ ROI which transfers into a 5-10% profit margin. This allows them to pay a 2-4% dividend and to keep expanding.

10c/ kg more is nothing when your nearest competitor is Ballinrobe which specialises in sub 280 kg carcasses.

Rathkeale is picking up AA and HE heifers at 5-10c/ kg below the quoted bases and paying only 10c bonus on AA heifers. No negotiations

Slaney is more or less the same. Small loads and infrequent customers are 5c less on all categories across the board. The thinking is they won't haggle and it's not worth it to move to a plant up the country. They give the small man the impression they are doing them a favour.

ABP/Goodman, Kepak and Dawn, are the big 3, would Liffey be number 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭grass10

Are you giving away your Angus / Herefords for this little you would get far more in any mart but surely you cannot have many people giving away cattle at these prices or are the grades very good ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,695 ✭✭✭Anto_Meath

Between the marts, live exports and beef plants Liffey could have is much if not more control over the price of beef than any of the other 3.

U have a point, I'm surprised Snr let Jnr so big in live exports business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭148multi

Somebody else would pick up jnr's market if he didn't use his contacts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,695 ✭✭✭Anto_Meath

I would say Snr has a steak in jnr's export business. Snr is a very sharp business man...

always enjoyed meeting him , methinks he's staying at the same type of job going forward

I never have many. This year about 5 AA bullocks,4 AA heifers,3 HE bullocks and about 5 HE heifers. Generally have no more thab 2-3 in a bunch when finished.

Travelling anywhere costs 20+ in transport and probably 1% less in K/O. On a 280 kg carcase that os about 14c/ kg.. Saw the deduction and transport for a few cattle sold in Gortalea it was 52 euro a head. On a 300kg carcasse it's 17c/ kg.

No ABP or Dawn plant will quote inour area against Rathkeale or Charlesville. You would want 15c/ kg travelling to break even you will never get that unless you have 10+. I have had agents in giving you a bit more on some but not on them all. Then they are often sending them to two different plants.

Ya at the moment the marts are better than Rathkeale or Charleville to us locally if you have cattle but there is no fortune after you pay fees and transport. If it will still be there in June is the question

I've to travel to get the better bonuses on those breeds too, but it pays this year. I've no doubt the local plants are paying for far away cattle better than paying local farmers. It doesn't make sense only trying to control the kill.

    U24 month bulls u/r 6.50. North East

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭Cavanjack

I’ve bulls that could probably be killed but going to feed them on for at least another month. They are still thriving away and Prices are rising weekly and kill is still strong. I’ll wait for €7 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,090 ✭✭✭kk.man

I'd say there's a few like you, waiting. 7e not impossible, there's no script for the consistent price rise.

A few load of 500kg plus bulls at €7 or even €6.50 would keep the wolf from the door for a while.

Yea, mine similar, sorta regret not doing the same for another month but deal is done.

Herd is restricted from last week for not doing 4 monthly test, want to get it done and put of way but didn't want annoying testing bulls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭Cavanjack

Have a good few bought back in. Buying a few every week. Have about 80 left to buy.
Coming in between 1200-1400. Paid closer to 1500 for the odd one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 971 ✭✭✭leoch

Do u buy all ur own stock cj..AnD wat marts do u buy in and which do u find good for stock quality and service

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,219 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

You will be doing OK so. It's the lads that have sold without buying are struggling. Summer grazers are between a rock and a hard place this year. Even lads that sold before Christmas are struggling

Buying single bulls takes time, it hard to get bunches

Yeah buy all myself. 90% of them online now. >50% are bought in carnaross, great choice of bulls there every week. It’s a busy spot and a disaster if your cattle had not being penned together.
I buy the remainder in ballyjamesduff, Kingscourt and the odd time in carrigallen.
On the right day Kingscourt can have great quality stock in it and it is well staffed.
Work full time so the online has been a game changer.

Fair play cj if u work full-time also u a busy man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭grass10

My motto is you sell to whoever leaves you the highest margin so if you only have a few Angus to sell most of the year you'll do better in a good mart that will put your cattle up to a proper level

Transport cost is the same for buying or selling in a mart if your buying or selling 3 or 4 cattle and you Transport with your jeep it's the same cost as going to a factory if your approx the same distance

At the moment your probably worse off in the factory vs mart for most steers or heifers if you're selling on the grid but most lads can't convert mart price to kill value they are just real happy to get a big cheque

Thanks, can be busy at times but have good help when I’m working. Try to keep things as simple as possible and am fairly well set up facility wise.
