No private car owner for 32 months?!

    Hi

Cartell report is telling me that the car hasn’t been taxed for 2 years.
also saying ‘trade sale’ for previous 2 sales and was in 2 separate garages for 15 and 17 months respectively without a private owner.

everything else seems to be fine with the car.

Any insight would be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

wondering if this is a sign to avoid buying ?

Or is it common for dealers to keep cars this long?

    Maybe use the car themselves?

But car also wasn’t taxed in 2023 or 2024!

Nobody wanted it, what is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 Jolibee

    it’s a Santa Fe 2.2 diesel automatic 4WD

    decent condition

Can’t understand why no one would want it

Unless the dealers were using it themselves but without taxing it?

    bought new in UK

    Imported here after a year

Was it NCT’d at all or did that expire as well?

NCT was done in ‘23 and is ok until Jan ‘26

ever come across a case like this ?
    Car drives well

    Sounds fine etc

It’s just the ownership history on cartell that’s concerning

    tax is €790 a year

Would that be a factor in people not wanting it ?

Would just be a factor in it's price for selling it

Garage could have been driving it on a trade plate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 Jolibee

trade plate allows garages to just drive the car around without paying tax etc?!

No, there is annual fee for the plates and restrictions on their use.

What's the difference in the mileage since the NCT? That'll tell you if it's been driven.

It’s not necessarily a reason to avoid, but it requires an explanation.

Cars are deprecating assets and it’s in a dealers interest to move them on as soon as possible. Why would two dealers have a car that should be relatively saleable in stock for the better part of 3 years?

It could be that they were using it themselves, or it could suggest that the car was crashed or had a major fault and was being repaired during at least some of this time. The history report won’t necessarily tell all.

€790 a year to tax these days would certainly be a factor in it being undesirable to many people even if the selling price reflected it. It passing through the trade for long periods sounds like to me it was almost impossible to sell at any sort of retail price.

If you do go ahead with buying it then just remember that as you will probably be married to it.

€790 tax per annum would definitely push it into a lower bracket in terms of desirability. Grand to have the money to buy the thing but having that money every year + insurance is just going to make most people not interested.

I know myself I wouldn’t be buying a car with such a huge tax bill

Higher tax would make it less desirable, but not to such an extent to render it unsaleable for two and a half years. This should have been a reasonably desirable 7 seater at a time when they were in short supply.

    agreed

    Hence my confusion and hesitation

Thanks to everyone for the input

Have you asked the dealer why it hasn’t been taxed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 Jolibee

I won’t be able to reach dealer until Tuesday morning

but what I was told doesn’t match up with the Cartell record

It is a franchise dealer though so again unusual

    spoke with dealer

Had no explanation for why the car was off road for so long

Said it’s not a valid reason to walk away just because there wasn’t a buyer for the car for 3 years.

lesson learned: do cartell before handing over deposit!

They should. Deposits are to hold the car, and cover the cost of dealing with a timewaster. Not a short term cash advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,723 ✭✭✭✭User1998

No I agree. Not a valid reason to back out of a deal, checks should have been done before placing the deposit. Was just curious is all.

When I first called to enquire about the car the dealer said he had the car since September.

As it was advertised as having one previous owner it would be reasonable to assume that the one previous owner sold it to dealer in September.

However there is no record of the car changing ownership last September.
It was passed from one dealer to another 15 months ago.

Dealer did not clarify any of this so essentially was being misleading and not completely transparent.

Only answering questions asked and not providing full actual history of the car.

As it’s a Hyundai brand franchise dealership I presumed everything was legitimate and took dealer at his word.

The dealer is the time waster.

In my opinion, you probably should have requested a full comprehensive history check, or did your own, before committing to buy the car. The garage may have bought it recently and the seller never did the ownership transfer online. I assume you haven’t done any other checks to see if theres a reason the car isn’t selling? Like a mechanical inspection etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 Jolibee

I completely agree and I will know better from now on.

No I haven’t done other checks.

    Deposit will be returned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,999 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

id be looking for deposit back. A main dealer and an off standard history not disclosed. No case for keeping deposit.

An 18 car having stood parked half its life is something anyone would want to know and a main dealer should be disclosing this and the reason for it being parked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,723 ✭✭✭✭User1998

To be fair the only thing they have to disclose is accident damage or mileage discrepancies. Now how long they’ve had a car in stock. We also don’t know if the car has been parked up. It could have been used by the garage as a run around or courtesy vehicle etc

it’s not that unusual for cars to move from dealerships though is it? If it wasn’t moving in one don’t they move it to another dealer in the network (if possible) to see if that helps? Maybe I’ve imagined that.
