I got picked in Standstead for a too big bag. I knew it was too big and had got away before, but got nabbed and had to pay to put it in the hold. I went out and bought a bag that meets Ryanair's cabin spec and have never paid the penalty again. It's an idiot tax that and it's set high so that people learn. The more people who sneak over size bags on the less efficient the plane becomes, blame your other passengers for Ryanair being anal about the rules not Ryanair for making people do what they agreed to do numerous times.

If you want "free" cabin bags go on an airline that allows them.

or maybe Ryanair make more profit and it doesn’t impact the price of flights whatsoever.

Well I've never had to pay yet anyway. But I'm glad you are admitting yourself to the category of people which caused the necessity for Ryanair to be anal about rules. Thanks a million Del. The other posters can send you their bills for being ripped off :-)

Without sounding smug I now check in a bag no matter where I'm going or what airline. So little stress about 1. the size of the carry on, and 2. will there be space overhead. I just wait until the end, hop up the steps and put my little messenger bag under the seat, sit back and get going.

I know it costs, but it's so worth it. The only issue I have with Ryanair is that it is not that easy to figure out HOW to check a 10kg bag, it looks like the only option is 20kg, but fear not, it's hidden away in the priority +10kg panel on the website, I just opt to check the bag in.

Honestly in every bit of travel I've done in the last year, the checked case was on the belt by the time I got to it, no waiting around the carousel. I do realise that some need to save a few bob on the flight cost, but some seem to need to get off the plane FIRST and get out the airport door FIRST, and catch their bus/train whatever, but the reality is that no matter how quick we are, we are always at the mercy of the immigration queues anyway, you never know what they are going to be like.

I seem to remember that on one of the last flights I took, it was cheaper to check a bag in that to carry it on.

I wouldn't be surprised! But I never look anymore at how much cheaper or dearer it might be to use carry on, I just check in bags to avoid any hassle. Getting older and obviously grumpier with a touch of the Victor Meldrews now. 😊

I use a ryan air bag but the last time i flew I was worried it was going to burst when I was zipping it up, id say i was lucky not to be charged?

Why would anyone need a check in bag for a few days away? I can do 4/5 days away with a free under seat bag usually!

If they are using any COERCIVE tactics this needs to be highlighted in the media and investigated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,325 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Well it removed any worry about liquids. Maybe I'm misremembering and it could be that I booked a carry on but then received an email saying I could check it in for free. I'd normally just have carried on a bag.

I'm flying to Spain on Friday with Ryanair.

I love Ryainair and think they have gotten a bad rap over the last 25 years or so.A lot of that was because of their over zealous, arbitrary and random policy regarding bag size and charges.

They officially or unofficially changed tact on this about 10 years ago,at the same time they upper their game re customer service.During this time Ryanair were on a par with Aer Lingus in my opinion.

It's obvious to anyone who has used them in the last year or two that there's a policy (official or unofficial) to go back to the days of stinging customers at the gate.

Nobody has a problem with people getting caught chancing their arm with an over sized bag. However it's a different story when you're at the mercy of somebody at a gate arguing over if the strap is actually touching the side of the cage, did it slide or did you have to push into the cage etc.

I've never been charged for a bag as I stay within the proper guidelines (so does my wife although she got stung)

I think you're not fully understanding this thread or maybe it's a bit too nuanced for you.

None of these problems existed until airlines like Ryanair turned baggage into a cash cow. People bought the ticket, checked their bags..Boarding aircraft was much simpler and faster because people were not bring all their belongings to the gate. People were also not chomping at the bit to get off the plane on arrival, something I fail to understand the logic or need for.

Not 100% sure that is correct. Ryanair initially did not segment to the extent they do now but had lower fares. Bags, boarding, seating were things they introduced to increase profits, not to lower fares. Some of their fares are no-where near being low.

It's 25 quid lads for priority. It's not that expensive and you've no worries about getting stung at the gate.

Priority are getting stung as well - the bag still has to fit into the cage, and woe betide you (and your credit card) if there's a bit of strap hanging out.....

A prority bag isn't measured it's weight they go by. Size doesn't matter😉

It does. The man I saw getting stung was priority. It was way smaller than those dimensions, but the wheels stuck out by a couple of mm.

Actually it is more expensive and complicated nowadays to fly with Ryanair. I lived in England in the early 2000's and I would often fly home on Ryanair for £20 return and there was none of this messing with bags and I have to say it was great. I would buy with £20 return ticket, rock up with the my sports bag full and walk onto the plane put the bag in the overhead bin and that was it. I remember the lads I worked with couldn't believe that I could fly home to Dublin for £20 and yet they were paying over £70 to get the train home to Manchester or where ever.

Nowadays I wouldn't fly Ryanair anywhere that is over an hour and half away, not worth the hassle or the stress of whether you bag is the right size or weight or whatever. Usually with Aer Lingus you can bring a 10kg bag or any shape or size with no hassle. What is the the rule with Ryanair, Is it the weight of the bag or the size of the bag? A backpack is never going to just slide it, some will always stick out, be it a pocket or a strap. Surely if the bags meets the weight then that should be it.

A backpack isn't suitable for the bag sizer. Pretty simple really. They've a policy for the bags, if you don't want to buy a bag that fits into the sizer or you need to bring more luggage, just pay for it, it's not rocket science

I went on 12 short distance journeys with Ryanair last year. Used the same full-up carry-on bag every time. Got stopped once as the attendant was clearly trying to shakedown passengers at the end of the queue as the gate was closing.

I could’ve spent over €250 in total for priority bookings on all my flights so paying the €60 penalty once wasn’t a bad result.

That was actually my experience and thinking aswell, i went on many flights where the bag would have been too big but the time I was stopped the bag did fit in but bulged a bit, and I had packed it so that it would fit if asked, but had done that a number of times beforehand and the attendant said it was OK. However on this occasion she was insistent it was too big so i had to pay the 60 euro. However since that time I have made sure to bring a smaller bag and bring very few things. So definitely the bag check regime has got an awful lot stricter and does seem a bit unfair and inconsistent now

If pack a backpack and it is under 10kg then it shouldn't be a problem. Do Ryanair has a written policy that backpacks are not accepted? This is a scam and you can jump through hoops all you want but backpacks are not banned so therefore Ryanair are participating in a ripoff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,357 ✭✭✭Montage of Feck

From what I've seen it's always people in the priority queue that get get checked. I usually chance my arm with a back back on the basic fare, so far so good.

    🙈🙉🙊

As long as the backpack fits inside the measurements then fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭beachhead

Asian airlines def follow the Ryanair model. They have agents patrolling the gates to look at passengers bags.Won't name one particular airline in case Micko has a patent on measuring tapes and weighing scales. The African airlines are not as bad.The right accent can still work.

OP said his wife and him stayed within the rules and she was caught so obviously something has changed
