Mount Melleray has closed. This is the sort of fun palace my parents thought was a cool day trip when we were on holiday.

My dad was always slightly cynical about the religion thing (which my mother bought hook line and sinker), he called them the Nastursiums 😁

Opulent looking place, must be some spend to keep it going. Collection plates ftw.

If they want it redone, just let the word out that there will be refugees housed there. The woman running the bookshop isn't any authority. Once that word is out, the locals will take care of the demolition.

And they let people in with dogs, too. Nice.

The Franciscans announced the closure of their friary in Clonmel, resulting in a sit-in!

The High Court managed to persuade them to vacate just in time to avoid the arrival of Storm Eowyn.

Can't say the creator of the universe is doing much to preserve his brand in Ireland.

It's amazing that any time you speak to the devout they tell you that their church is "packed" or has "full attendance".

It must be just all the ones I pass on a Sunday that are empty.

In fairness, taking a flexible approach to the truth is an ongoing issue with many churches.

Depends where. if I'm out cycling on Sunday, you'd often see a fair number of cars parked outside some rural churches, others look bordering on derelict. Only time I've ever been inside one has been for a wedding or funeral. I'd guess a lot of the generation now in there 60s, 70s and above are still regular attendees but most other folks only go out of duress.

As Al Pacino said in The Devil's Advocate

    He’s an absentee landlord

Unless you are under 15yrs of age, people shouldn't be going out of duress.

You either believe in God and go to church, or don't and stay at home. No-one, especially any adult, should be forced to do something they don't want to do.

Most outlets will have fewer (some, a lot fewer) services per weekend than they did in the past. So a not-too-badly attended service is, on its own, an anecdote, it's not data…

There'd be even fewer church weddings, and a lot fewer baptisms / FHCs going in if it was really the case that nobody was acting under duress.

Things are changing though, someone who was at best lukewarm about religion and rarely attended church themselves is not really in a position to insist that their grandchildren get the whole nine yards

I'd guess very many people attending church do it out of a sense of tradition coupled with duty to their family or community rather than strong religious conviction. Many of us over the age of 15 are coerced into doing things we don't want to do very regularly, whether it is working a job we don't like to pay the bills, cleaning up after our kids, visiting the other half's parents, doing college exams, etc. You could argue for distinguishing what is necessary from what is not, but many things fall under the idea of a duty of care or kindness for others we love. Getting dragged to the church or mosque when you'd really rather not falls into this category.

Pope Frank's hat has been hung up for him for the very last time ever.
