TV3 repeated Emmerdale at pre-Ireland AM (6.30am) from Sep 2001 to Apr 2009, and then again from Jan 2012 to Jun 2012.

They repeated Corrie pre-Ireland AM from Jan 2012 to Dec 2014.

They repeated them also from 15.00 to 17.00 at various times between 2001 to 2014.

They also had an omnibus every weekend for both of them.

UTV Ireland tried out a few different formats, they had an omnibus on weekends, or otherwise sometimes had them repeated the following day. The main thing is that they only ever showed the same episode twice.

Soaps returned to TV3 in Decemeber 2016, and each episode shown 4 times - original time on VM1, repeated on VM3 after 10pm, repeated on VM3 following day at around 3pm, and repeated in an omnibus at the weekend.

I see virgin are preferred by clubs to take over broadcasting of the league of ireland with 36 matches and at least 1 game a week:

That’s an interesting one all right. Would have thought Premier would have been in the reckoning after their deal to run LOITV. I know there’s been a bit of bad blood between RTE and certain clubs over lack of UCL/UEL qualifiers coverage.

Premier would be subscription though. VM would be free to Air broadcast, but I suppose they could have some on VM More stream only for VM broadband paying customers, and of course Sky carries VM in their satellite subscription. I doubt LOI matches would incentivise too many extra customers here to sign up to Premier, but perhaps they'd have paid streaming rights further afield. Theres an insatiable appetite for football in the world, a lot to do with gambling in asia, and the LOI later season would fill a gap in the summer months.

I thought VM had said that they were only looking for pre-packaged sports where they weren't involved in the production of the sport, are the FAI paying for the production / OBU costs?

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

I think they did in 2023 at least when VMTV only carried five games.

Not sure they’d be doing so in circumstances where they’d be the primary domestic rights holder though.

"Claire Brock and Ciara Doherty" from last night's The Tonight Show on tv guide on EPG. They need to do better with updating the guide and be more accurate.

Virgin don’t use OBUs for their LOI coverage. They, effectively, piggy back on the existing LOI TV coverage (with some additional cameras). It’s a “souped up” version of the streaming product. They have the panel in studio etc. The picture quality isn’t as good as it could be and sound isn’t alway great but they really do make a effort at promoting the games and seem enthusiastic about the coverage

RTE’s coverage, when they bother, involves OBUs with panelists on site etc. Their picture/sound etc is significantly better than VMs, but it’s been clear for years that some in RTE Sport didn’t want to cover the league at all

The ad hoc nature of coverage has never helped build an audience for it, so it looks like the regular nature of Virgin’s offer is enough for the clubs to overlook some of their issues

(fwiw some of the people involved with Premier Sports are involved with Shelbourne in case anyone didn’t know)

Mickey O’Rourke bought the majority stake in the club last year - that makes me even more surprised Premier not in a shout for these rights, particularly when Setanta/eir had them before, but maybe as one poster said it’s a FTA partner they are looking for with LOITV their primary pay outlet.

Anyway, this story from RTE is as good as confirmation, I guess.

I think it is a huge risk for LOI, mainly because if Virgin Media aren't getting the audience they want, they will drop it quite quickly, I could be wrong about this and VMTV will continue to support it for a number of years.

well the deal is for 3 years so it’s a fairly substantial commitment.

Nothing to suggest that Virgin Media Television wouldn't quietly drop matches due to low audience numbers.

Just noticed that some UEFA games on Virgin Media air on VMTV MORE but according to the news graphics not on Virgin Media TV Play, are those games live on the Virgin Media On Demand service?

Also noticed that they have moved the weather to after the News, I always thought it was funny that TV3 were able to have a sponsor for the weather on the news, is this just on the 7:30 NEWS?

And "viewer discretion is advised" on Emmerdale Farm, do ITV have a similar warning? Something might be happening tonight in Beckindale :)

MORE is only available to VM cable customers. It's not on VMPlay.

Right enough, Deric popped up right at the end of the 12.30 news without a sponsor sting.

The health warning about watching Emmerdale is because watching Emmerdale may damage your mental health!

Re MORE: are all of the sports on More unavailable on Play as live streams? Do VM customers get these games?

Re Emmerdale: from the little I watch I feel my IQ dropped significantly.

VMTV More is a pay TV channel limited to VM cable customers. It isn’t on VMTV Play in any shape or form; though I presume it is on Virgin TV Anywhere or whatever it’s called these days (the out-of-home cable package viewing app supplied to VM cable customers; a totally different thing from VMTV Play).

TLDR: if its on VMTV More, it’s limited to VM cable customers only.

Best match was on VM2 anyway, the 4-2 demise of Man City a joy to watch, at the hands (or feet) of 20 somethings, in decent enough HD on VMPlay, or passable SD on Saorview. Or you could get a VM broadband/TV box and watch the (boring boring) Arsenal match on More or Less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,749 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yes, I understand that VMTV MORE is a pay TV channel exclusive to Virgin Media Customers, my question is do any of the matches stream on VMTV Play without using the channel name but rather just a live stream. Do they appear on catch up on VMTV Play?

    Just 45 seconds of highlights. I don't think they've rights for catch-up.

RTÉ had a decent highlights reel for PSG v Man City with Adrian Eames commentating on the match in their highlights programme last night. In terms of the wider FTA TV audience ratings; how many viewers did PSG v Man City get on VM Two while up against Celtic v Young Boys in Parkhead on RTÉ2? Viewership figures from PS1 for the Celtic match last night would be good as well. There was a huge positive reaction from Irish viewers when Adam Idah scored the winning goal for Celtic in front of their fans at Parkhead last night.

Who knows what the figures were, but Celtic in a dead rubber (for Young Boys anyway) surely hadn't the TV pull of the survival fight between possibly the richest pairing, the underachievers versus the dying wasp that is City. City with 10 thirty somethings, PSG bursting with youth, separated by a space or so either side of the 24th place drop zone. Thrilling 2nd half, right to final minute.

LOI deal announced this morning. 4 year deal. 36 games per year (one each series)

A big moment for the LOI and there can’t be too many VM rights deals that last that long either…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,749 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Aren't most broadcasting rights for sports between 3 and 5 years in duration?

I still think it won't last the 4 years, they will shunt it from VMTV TWO to FOUR to MORE to exclusively on PLAY!

Champions League is 3 years. Six nations was 3 years (extended). GAA is 5 but Virgin aren’t involved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,455 ✭✭✭deezell

It's about viewer numbers. I only watch Vm for news and sport, herself maybe house hunting programs. Viewership during sport must be higher, and they've a higher stream bit ratevon 2 than 4, pictures are acceptable SD. More is inaccessible to everyone not on their broadband, not even pay per view. So More is out. PLAY is the best option if you had to pick one only from the viewers point, but not the VM revenue point of view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,749 ✭✭✭RoTelly

During major sports unless both FAI and VMTV are willing to promote LoI it will fall flat.

I am suggesting that VMTV could push games further down their channels, doesn't matter that MORE is only available to VM customers and thus reducing an already small audience. It is just my perception of VMTV.

Also saying that if other games are on at the same time, those goals will be shown during the live match as well which is a nice bonus.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,871 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

If the deal really does stipulates free to air coverage, then they cannot use VMTV More, it’s not a free to air channel. Of course, we don’t really know the details of the contract.

Most sports rights deals here and in the UK are three to four years. Rarely longer, occasionally shorter (the previous to this one EPCR deals were only two years, for some reason). In North America they tend to be much longer, though. The NFL’s are ten years but that length of a deal would be frowned upon by the competition authorities here - I’m surprised the GAA deal is that long but of course that fell foul of the competition authorities for other reasons.

VIrtually zero FTA, soccer or rugby, in the UK. FA cup is about all, some Internationals. We're lucky here
