What is incredible is that he has gone into aggressive and confrontational mode in his first week in office. Imagine picking fights and bust ups with your friends and allies without even having being provoked first.

Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on US imports in retaliation to a similar move by Trump.

    bbc

Petro has today said Trump would “wipe out the human species because of greed” and accused Trump of considering Colombians an “inferior race”.

He goes on to say that he is “stubborn” and that while Trump can try to “carry out a coup” with “economic strength and arrogance”, he will, in short, fight back.

Not only does Petro appear to threaten retaliatory tariffs, but most significantly he says: “From today on, Colombia is open to the entire world, with open arms.”

While Trump is unlikely to take threats from Colombia, this is something that should worry a US president who wants to tackle migration.

Currently, tens of thousands of migrants from around the world – facilitated by criminal gangs – travel through Colombia every year to reach North America through the treacherous Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama.

The question now is how people will respond: will Colombia’s open invitation mean more attempt the journey?

Or will the threat of a closed US border at the end, and scenes of handcuffed deportees, deter people?

I despise this kind of pathetic reporting. He did not "cave" to US pressure, they always rejected military deportations and said they would accept civilian ones. The article somehow doesn't mention that Colombia threatened the exact same tariffs in return should the US implement them.

So often Trump resorts to showy gestures, compromises are offered, and then he threatens massive consequences and the original reasonable compromises are somehow treated as some great strategic victory. It is pathetic.

It's from the Bully handbook. How to be a better bully!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,285 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

His fanboys on social media are cheering all this on of course, but its a very strange way of conducting business and diplomacy - starting fights with countries that are not even looking for a fight.

Trade war in his first week, this is even more entertaining than I imagined. Don Jr must be worried, that coke addiction won't feed itself.

Yet you have some gobshites thinking we should brown-nose the bully

It's not strange at all when your mental capacity is clearly compromised.

”To be fair, and I think it's important to be very stoic about it, @greenfield21 has provided a source that does show that the US did get more exports from Ireland than the EU in November 2024. And when you consider explicitly what he said, that the US is the largest single country that we trade with, in isolation, that fact is true. Where this needs additional context though is A) Europeans have long embraced a single market which is our primary trade "partner" as it's allowed us to operate as a bigger individual on the global trade scene.”

Just to correct a flaw in your statement here, Ireland is the EU, it’s not Ireland and the EU.

Of course we should and from initial reports it looks like we will, we are a small insignificant country.

    Trump just posted this

    Image1.jpg

He is like a poker player calling all the other countries bluffs.

It may be crude, it may be unsophisticated but its effective.

From the guy who bankrupted a casino. Laughable really. Of course the MAGA crowd be delighted with that, takes their focus/anger from rising egg prices!

We've seen from history that appeasement doesn't work, why start it now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,522 ✭✭✭RedXIV

Well this is another example of where we probably need to be explicit in we are trying to convey. You are correct that we should be included as part of the EU as a concept but the statement that EU == Ireland is not true, it's made up of much more than just Ireland. But this is me being pedantic :) I fully understand your intention in the post and I've agreed with everything you've said in this thread to date, but I guess I'm just trying to show how looking to combat each statement is ultimately part of the problem, rather than trying to establish a common understanding.

I fully realise the irony of looking for this level of collaboration with folks who have already appeared completely set in their ways, but keeping the door open is the only way the completely divided lines will ever get any way close to agreements again

So far this week, he's pissed off Denmark, Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

President Petro: "I’ve been informed that you’ve imposed a 50% tariff on our human labour’s fruits to enter the US. I’ll do the same.”

You can use your economic power and arrogance to attempt a coup, as you did with Allende. But I will die standing by my principles. I’ve endured torture, and I will endure you."

    "Effective" he says hahaha.

”initial reports”, absolutely nothing of the sort exists.

Do poker players go bankrupt 6 times as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,109 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

I don't "support" him. He won the election. He's there for the next 4 years. We have to deal with him whether we like it or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Ireland is very much the EU, we are a member and treated equally. It’s very simple as that.

When you say keeping the door open, open to what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,225 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Actually yeah, poker players almost always go bankrupt eventually

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

And Trump went one further and bankrupted a Casino…just dwell on that.

In my opinion, there is something deeply flawed in a person who looks at that picture and doesn't react with a cringe of epic proportions.

It's so very much beyond weird.

It is time the current arrogant rulers of the US are taken down ….. they need to be taught a lesson that will leave them with their tail between their legs and with the rulers having to do a 180 degree turn which means a massive purge of all hardliners in the regime …… the way they are going annoying almost every country will lead to this ….. the hidden forces that rule through corrupt failed businessman Trump and the Fox news inexperienced clowns appointed all need to be removed ….. they have no place whatsoever and are not even elected ….. most of all Elon Musk needs to go ….. he ain't even American !!! …. these individuals are toxic and it will be fun seeing them all crash and burn very soon ……

All the rest of the world should basically close themselves off from the Republican rubbish show …. and let that cancer rot and die ….. the Republicans should have been finished off after the Iraq war ….. sad that they survived ….. they are nothing but a terrorist group ….. ISIS with power in fancy suits is basically what the Republican Terrorist Group is …… they are pure evil ….. sadly the Democrats are not that great but at least they have some decent people still in them and they do not act like this current shower do with blatant disregard for everyone and everything …… whereas the Republicans are 100% rotten to the core ….. freeze them out, divide them, let them crash and burn ….. and let Trump change his mind and change sides for to save himself and he will ironically end up the 'hero' ….. the man who will sell himself as 'the lateral thinker who brought down the Republican Terrorist Group' ….. even though this will be more of Trump just running with the hare and running with the hounds approach …..

There are plenty other countries to trade with worldwide ….. the rest of the world does not need a terrorist organisation flexing its muscle ….. let the rest of the world get on with their own trade and let America severely alone until they get this cancer out of their system ……

Not sure a convicted rapist is someone who should spearhead protecting women. Especially since he did no time for it and continues to be a sex pest per all the reports. One that is proud to have repealed Roe V. Wade, too.

No, I think Hannibal Lecter might have been a better choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,637 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Women and minorities deserve opportunity to succeed even if they're mediocre. Disabled, too (who are under attack via the anti-DEI stuff but that doesn't make the press as much.)

Why just reserve that to majority demographic men? And, as Michelle Obama said, most of the people she knew on corporate BOT's were pretty mediocre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

Love it ….. Elon Musk should be boycotted ….. a totally malign influence and a sponsor of terrorism ….. stop buying Tesla and stop using X/Twitter and he may get the message …… and stop funding terrorist organisations like the Republican Party and Alt fur Deutschland ….. it is truly sad that this guy is idolised by many …. I see the double standards too: if this guy was sponsoring ISIS he'd be in jail ….. the groups he sponsors are as bad as ISIS and maybe worse and we need to remember that …..

It says a lot that you've ignored his Palestine remarks and the fact he's authorised more dangerous weapons to sell to Israel. Trump the peacemaker was your promise and we're just a week in. Instead you're back to the quality of his memes. Weren't you critiquing our ability to think for ourselves?
