2024-25 season so far. George Lee hasn't a clue. "Éowyn's rate of deepening is unprecedented…". I've put in the Braer Storm of 1993 there to show its RaCy.

I wonder will it be long before the phone lines will be back up and running? If you think about it, the network was built up over years just for it to be wiped out during the storm. I suspect it may be a long while before there's a proper data/broadband connections.

It was like rolling back the years to about 1999 meteor service and their phone signal last night. I was able to pick up a bar in my back yard but it was so bad all the same. I got a call in but it was still bad.

It reminded me so much of the late 90s and poor phone signals and standing in awkward places. I am not used to this.

Completely agree with you I am in Galway City and I had no damage but I am shocked at the response from Government, they should recall the Dail and put emergency procedures in operation to assist those in difficulty ,bloody disgrace that's what it is.

Am living near the county town in Mayo, only lost power for a half day and escaped the worst of it. The level of damage around is unreal, you can't walk a few yards without seeing trees knocked.

Traffic over the weekend was mad busy, petrol stations rammed, so many places shut. Family down south have fared much worse.

I'd imagine the newly formed government haven't heard the last of this. People are angry. Going on a two week break is farcical after 2 months of doing nothing.

I suspect there will be many schools which won't be able to open tomorrow due to damage, no electricity or no water.

This is dreadful. Got water back this morning. No power, and got a text last night from ESBN:

Latest update on the outage at Ballinrobe. Power is estimated to be restored at 21:00 on 05/02/25.

5th of February?! Are they having a laugh? It would have been better if they said they don't know when it'll be fixed.

We'd be absolutely lost without our turf and logburner. We may move the bed into the sitting room yet!

If power is going to take that long to be restored - should the government be issuing an emergency humanitarian action plan. Move people into the city's. Make deals with hotels for people to stay in hotels in nearby city/towns. Get people out from the no power rural areas.

I want to book a hotel room but I have an aging parent to consider who won't move. If the government gave advise to move into the city, she may consider it.

It's bad. I am so sorry.

I want to book a few nights in a city hotel for me and a parent but she won't go. Just to break this up.

My guess is that towns and villages will be restored first before moving up side and by roads.

Government / ESB have a record of pensioners and vulnerable people who get subsidies. Would like to see Garda, Defence Forces and County Council staff call and check in on these folks in the worst affected areas.

For my sis in Sligo the novelty of it all for her and her hubby and three kids has truly worn off. Apparently the local community has come together to make soup and warm dishes for neighbors. Cooked on stoves and houses with generators by those who have them. Times like these do seem to bring out the best in people.

Finally got power back in East Clare this afternoon. Local Supermacs plaza have done a grand job letting people charge things up. Better than Birdhill, couldn't connect battery pack to their power sockets.

Can only echo what others are saying about lack of information. Had little to no mobile signal and hunched around a battery powered radio you felt totally isolated as no specific useful information was given out. It was only from a neighbour that we found out Supermacs was up and running. According to local Facebook pages we shouldn't expect to hear from government TD's cos they have families and may not have power themselves. Let's ignore the fact that they will have direct access to facilities that will enable them to access information. The local lad in Supermacs gave out more information in 5 minutes than I've had from any TD locally.

Tip for anyone without heat or cooking facilities you can place tealights in a muffin tray and boil water and heat basic things. Managed a fried egg and hot baked beans this morning.

Anyone still without power you truly have my sympathy.

Looks like a bit of settled weather from Thursday. Hopefully will speed up the restoration of services.

    Still no power here..South Meath..

Could be worse tho..loads of rain water for toilets and general water needs, had drinking water filled and have gas hob..

ESB saying 100,000 will still be without power after Friday 31st January. I think we will be on that list.

One positive is that the night sky was amazing last night and Friday night. The light pollution from local towns and villages was gone so the amount of stars was amazing.

I do agree that the national radio stations were very poor for providing updates on the storm aftermath and recovery. All we had was the radio.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

another gripe why can't met.ie and powecheck create an emergency bit of there site that you can get with a slow Internet connection. let's be honest it can't be that difficult can it ?

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I don't understand why the government hasn't declared a national emergency or whatever it is officially called, so the maximum resources are activated and made available to those in affected areas. The reaction of the government is so underwhelming for what is clearly very severe situation. It beggars belief.

Caught a bit of the Brendan Oconnor radio show this morning - a commentator made the same point. If you've no power in a new A rated house you're stuck, can't even light a fire to keep warm.

Evening all, power back here east of Castlebar. The destruction is unreal. Help will have to be drafted in. The main Swinford to Foxford Road. I never want to hear wind like it again

You do know you can have an A rated all electric home and still have a stove and a gas hob. I know because I have one albeit without the stove as it has yet to be installed.

Budget aside, it would be incredibly moronic to build or retrofit a home and not aim for an A rating.

Got power back here in West Offaly near the Westmealth border last night. ESB Powercheck had an estimated restoration of Tuesday Jan.28 at 21.00, so delighted and surprised when it came back just before 23.00 last night. Fallen trees are a huge problem, I would think they have caused most of the destruction to power lines and also blocking roads and damaging buildings.

The Copernicus satellite managed to pick out the destroyed dome at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence at Bekan, County Mayo, when the satellite passed over in the immediate aftermath of Storm Éowyn on Friday morning.

Just got this for my area. Signed up for updates but didn't get one for this. Yet to see an ESB van anywhere in the area. No doubt there are some, but progress is extremely slow based on updates from other areas in mid Monaghan. Fingers crossed it's a worst case scenario.

Best man at my brother's wedding this Thursday (thankfully it's been held in an area less affected) but I'm sure with all our family and neighbours in the same boat, its not going to make the build up easy. Cannot see any lights anywhere in the countryside. Luckily we've a small generator to just about keep the fridge going, charge phones (albeit with very limited phone coverage) and have water in the house.

I think we all know. The timing doesn't suit for the government to get involved. They are on a break as Ross would say. Heard a soundbite from Dara Calleary on the news, if you blinked you'd miss it. Hope he lasts longer in this role than his previous attempt. Not off to a great start.

Rte with their lip service attempt at covering the problem. Made sure to include the clip of the lad saying it could be worse, referencing Gaza. RTE never not at it....
