It’s a week of Press Releases apparently. This is today’s one. I’m glad to see that the Christmas Carols show is back this year having been a best of version last year. Odd that the recent series of the Young Offenders is RTE Player only, while the Christmas special will air on RTÉ One. I believe the Late Late Show New Years Eve special actually filmed a few weeks ago in the week that the Late Late Show didn’t air. They are showing the new Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. I wonder will they simulcast it with BBC 1? At least it means it’ll be available On Demand for those who no longer have the option of recording BBC shows.

And on 2FM this Christmas Day catch-up on all of the biggest and best music and entertainment stories of the year with Lottie Ryan and Conor Behan.

Across the festive season 2FM will have celebrity takeovers where some well-known names in Irish entertainment will be handed control of the Christmas playlist. First up is Chubby Cat followed by Davina Devine.

    Wow. Very inspiring

Where do you see about The Young Offenders and Gavin and Stacey? I can't see them in the link.

So are they saving money by not broadcasting the show, or will the show now end up in the accounts for 2024?

It’s finally happened this morning, the last vestiges of the TRTE brand have been dumped in favour of RTE Kids. With the first new presentation on an RTE channel in almost eleven years!

Yeah, they'd been running it on line for a number of months.

DOG/BUG is large, slightly translucent purple. Actually don't think it is Translucent, just the logo in the corner.

Not a fan of the logo, but the idents are nice.

The Christmas RTE Guide is out today and the good news is that RTE seem to be making a better effort than last year. However last year’s effort was so bad that it wouldn’t have taken much for it to be better this year, but at least they have a semblance of a Christmas schedule this year on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, rather than the wall to wall Hollywood movies of last year. Dont get me wrong there’s still plenty of Hollywood movies, especially on St Stephen’s Day which being midweek doesn’t have the sport to save it, apart from racing.

New Years Eve again has a Late Late special ending a bit before midnight so as to accommodate the separate NY countdown show.

Any of the years I have been at home with the parents they've nearly always ended up watching TG4 countdown, I don't quite get move over to the live event in Dublin for the countdown.

Meanwhile I see RTÉ's Irish Lanugage Current Affairs show launched last Sunday! with the press release posted the following day!

    https://about.rte.ie/2024/12/09/foram-new-current-affairs-programme-in-irish-on-rte-one/

Oddly coming from the Dublin Studios. I don't see it lasting, a complete fob IMO.

RTÉ have put a proposal into the Department to consider the closure of their Digital Radio Station bar RTÉ Radio GOLD. Not sure when this happened, not sure if the +1's were included in the proposal.

What a backward step. First they close DAB radio. Is this digital radio on Saorview? Or on player/Tunein/Alexa etc? Never use FM in the kitchen anymore, Alexa gadget plugged into the AUX of the old cassette radio stereo.

This is old news as it was announced as part of the 5 year strategy to close them except for RTE Gold which I listen to a lot . Of course the Dept will have to consider this but you would imagine a revamped app to happen next year will probably cater for what's on them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭RoTelly

They have only just put the proposal to the Minister. And it was part of their previous year strategy.

I'd like to see the revamped app first TBH.

Most if not all past RTE Radio network closures happened at Easter time, 2fm on AM closed Easter 2004, Radio 1 on 567 AM closed Easter 2008, DAB closed Easter 2021 and the longwave giant 252 closed Easter 2023, on that basis and the fact that they recently submitted a request to the department, I think Easter 2025 might be lights out for 2xm, 1Xtra, Jr radio, Pulse and Chill

Streams as well as Broadcast? Or just the satellite feeds, which are the only license mandated sources, and astra is technically outside the jurisdiction which leaves only Saorsat on Eutelsat 9°. I don't think you need to involve the regulator for Internet content, starting up or closing down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭RoTelly

So from that I would expect that RTÉ Digital Radio Stations will be on the air until Mart 2026.

Proposal only just sent in at the end of 2025, currently with the CnaM, most likely not a pressing issue for the minister or the department, hold on long figure until decision is made in September 2025, RTÉ start the closure process… March 2026. If the minister has made a decision.

I suppose the late application for closure at the end of 2024 will be blamed on the Minister and the Department and not RTÉ slow request to the minister.

RTÉ have recent submitted a tender for a new TV Licence Evaders ad campaign. I think the contract is worth €75k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭RoTelly

There are possibly other forms but surely RTÉ could simple utilize their own marketing people for this. They have serveral market campaigns for all of their services running, or are this all designed by outside consultants!

Continuity announcer made a mess at the end of Room to Improve speaking over audio pre-recorded on the actual episode.

After RTE's exaggeration fest during the cold snap, we had on tonight's news a school teacher who spoke about kids use of AI to do their ekker. He was captioned as ' X Y, History teacher and AI Expert'. He came across and sounded like Pat Short's teacher character. Apparently, he's 'in the AI space', so he claimed. If he really was an expert AI practicioner/systems developer/ creator, he wouldn't be spending his days muttering about the Reformation to a bunch of bored teenagers. Watch on Player and listen to the manner and tone with which David McCullagh closes the interview, and repeats the dubious credit, with delicious emphasis. Dave is an expert bullshit spotter.

    RTÉ KIDS idents

Really dislike the name and the logo but the Idents are good, the "What's Next" promo is annoying.

CnaM will send their SIA to the minister in March

The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media is required to consult with Coimisiún na Meán regarding the sectoral impact and the public value of the proposal submitted by RTÉ to close four of its Digital Radio Services. Our role is to act in an advisory capacity to the Department for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. However, the final decision as to whether to permit the closure will rest with the Minister.

We are currently in the process of carrying out our assessment and will provide a summary report to the Department in March 2025.

So RTÉ Digital Radio station will continue to be on the air until at least June 2025.

Do anyone know which government party is taking over this post in the new government now that Catherine Martin is the outgoing minister in that department?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭RoTelly

AFAIK the department is being split, with communications and media going back into one department. One suggestion was Mary Butler (FF) but I think this was for the Arts and Culture.

Won't know for certain until next week when the new government is voted in and ministerial appointments are confirmed.

I have managed, somehow, to add the RTEplayer to my Firestick, I couldn't say exactly how I did it, it is a bit of a work around but it works. By downloading the Amazon Internet app, searching in Bing for the player and saving it as a bookmark, I can directly access the player from the homepage, all options are available, player, live. Maybe someone on here can suggest another route or a way to refine the process. The photos are not great, a bit of reflection on the screen.

I'd heard that Patrick O'Donovan was up for the role in Culture and Arts, and had hoped that Media would be subsumed back into Communications.

At one of Committees he asked RTÉ why they keep repeating "Will Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", not a huge fan of repeats on RTÉ but in fairness almost every year it gets 130,000 viewers.

O'Donavan has been given that role of Minister for Arts & Culture in Michael Martin's new cabinet this evening. And yes the Dept of Communications & Media have now gone back into that role as well.

It will be interesting to observe what the new Minister will say about continuing the funding for RTÉ while most of the country still pays the licence fee as normal. And then how he would deal with the all of the discussions about addressing the issues for the rest of the broadcasting & media sector in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Ah I had thought they would put Media back to the department of coms, and he'd be doing arts and culture.

Bad moved to bring Comms into arts and culture IMO. The department is messy he'll have control of a huge number of Semi State bodies under this department.

Sound gone on RTÉ ONE +1 and RTÉ2 +1 all night and into this morning, is this just on Sky Ireland, I see someone either in Sky or RTÉ decided to throw on the subtitles on RTÉ ONE so clearly they are aware of the issue, but forgot RTÉ2 +1.

Anyone else seeing this on other platforms Soarview and Virgin Media?
