Will north cork get hit badly ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭sudocremegg

I've to work tonight driving around the South East until 7am. Met Eireann app makes it look like the SE will get hit the least so hoping it won't be too severe compared to the west.

Centre is now close to 50N 20W and core wind zone of concern for later tonight is now developing at approx 48-49N 19-20W.

After reading last few pages (was off line 09-15 for my overnight) I can agree all guidance holding and if any trends at all, earlier onset and exit by possibly an hour or so.

Also agree with forecasts I read but would add (as stated in boards forecast) temps are likely to spike near 10-12 C just ahead of interval of very strong winds and fall steadily during windy period, also widespread thunder could develop along occluding front as it moves through overnight.

I know Storm Eleanor had a stingjet in early January 2018. Here's how the max gusts varied between the four Mayo stations on that occasion:

    Belmullet - 89 kph

    Claremorris - 126 kph

    Knock Apt - 156 kph (a record)

    Newport - 139 kph

I don't have a database of known stingjet depressions but I'd be willing to guess an average of 20-30 km/h?

As a long timer lurker on this site I find the discussion and graphs so informative. I told them here to expect a red alert Tuesday night due to info gathered here.
I can cope with snow alerts but I’m terrified of this one. Living in a fairly exposed site in West Cork. We have put away anything that could potentially ‘fly’ outside and do damage.
    hoping windows won’t blow in🤦🏼‍♀️.

Take care everyone but I expect to be offline tomorrow due to power outages.

Are you an essential services worker,?

If not your employer is sending you work in an environment where there is danger to life.

    Is your work critical?

I hope if any idiot goes near the coast because they want that video or photo and needs help is left there and the great men and women who help people don’t risk their safety to rescue them

Anyone know the existing record for wind gusts in south Dublin?

Also what are the predicted sustained wind speeds in the rathfarnham area do ya know?

What's notable about the Cork ME graph, for me, is the sheer length of the event. For those facing the most acute gusts, they have an obvious peak which you're drawn to. What stands out for Cork City is the 6-8 hours of gusts >100 km/h. It's going to be a long, loud night and gust after gust will bring a lot of repetitive strain. Plus there's always that one localised blast that lifts everything in your garden in a passing storm, I'm expecting tons of them in the middle of the night to wake me with a crash.

I might just stay up and post here altogether :/

All LIDL stores will be closed during red warnings for the area the store is in.

SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi have all said they will pull down the shutters for periods tomorrow, before reopening when the warning has lifted in each local area.

What are you basing your own thinking on exactly?

It couldn't be clearer the impact this storm is going to have.

AccuWeather has corrected its wind gusts again for my location 137km. Dread is now the feeling. Had no power for 4 days after daragh at least the following days weather was dry. This is going to be miserable

That's interesting, I knew of her but not a huge amount.

Winds could hit 200 km/h off the west coast...Both Meteo France and La chaine meteo are saying this and they are very accurate weather websites.

They have potential gusts of up to 145km/h for parts of Dublin also...

Reading reports of a potential sting jet forming. Any thoughts on this?

Somebody put up a top 10 wind speeds ever and it had Rosslare October 1995 at number 5. 174kph.

I distantly remember this storms. We had so many big trees in the front of our house and I vividly remember seeing them all being ripped for the ground. The power and energy of the wind was scary.

A very useful item to have, especially in times like this where powercuts are very possible, is a POWER BANK for your Mobile phones and devices. Worth buying ( cheap to buy - €20/30 ) .. if Electric goes, charge your devices from that. Basically a big battery that charges other devices
