All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

    Nazi?

I'll happily refer to Russians (and their apologists online) as such until they completely withdraw from Ukrainian land and overthrow the psychopath that's feeding their young men into the meat grinder.

Orc is a perfect term for a Russian soldier. They've dehumanised themselves with their barbaric behaviour in this failed attempt at an imperial invasion of their neighbour.

I wonder does he sense something is up now that Trump is the president now regarding Ukraine.

It's been interesting over the past 1-2 weeks how the European backers of the war have been collectively throwing their toys out of the pram.

The failed UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, wrote a incredibly bitter rant in the The Telegraph last week. It was essentially a long sulk where he finally abandoned one of the NATO myths about Russia - the country is stable and the dream of the Russians rushing to the Kremlin to burn it down isn't going to happen.

The NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has demanded that Europeans must learn Russian. According to him, it is the only alternative to a fantastical scheme he has that Europe will - in the midst of economic decline - massively increase military spending to fund a new super-army (and of course more jobs in NATO). In the old guns vs. butter argument, Mark Rutte clearly chooses guns. I don't think the average voter will agree.

And Two-Tier Keir has raced to Ukraine to sign a meaningless memorandum that on paper commits the UK to Ukraine for 100 years (but not really - the fine print allows it to be cancelled at any time) despite former UK general Richard Dannatt recently admitting that the UK would struggle to field just 5,000 men in Ukraine on an enduring basis. It's pure escapism - up there with Starmer's bizarre claim that the UK will be an AI superpower.

It's all very childish and non-serious by the European elites. There is a much more realistic and serious debate going on in the US that just doesn't happen in Europe. There is a great terror I think amongst the Europeans that in the US, the grown ups are back in charge and US diplomacy is going to be seriously attempted for the first time in 4 years. I don't think a deal between the US and Russia can be done - the sides are too far apart. But its got to be better for the world that there is least talking going on.

In my view, the key thing for Trump is to cut the Ukrainians and the Europeans out of the negotiations. They don't have any interest in a deal - bringing them on board would be a huge error as they will just attempt to sabotage it. It's encouraging that Zelensky was not allowed to attend the inauguration despite apparently begging to be invited, and its clear Trump has no time for the Starmer government either. The other key thing is Trump has to be willing to walk away when negotiations fail as I believe they will. It's Biden's war, not his war, and its a war that's going to be lost. If he tries to stay in it, it will become his war. Trump would be well-advised to make an attempt, then throw up his hands and walk away from it.

Yeah, Kyiv any day now I presume? Right?

Nah. Fantasy stuff dressed up as facts there. Could elaborate on a response but my experience on here in engaging with people who have an open dislike of a) the West and b) democratic norms is that you're wasting your time. So, nah.

He's way ahead of the game - he was making ego buttering complimentary comments about Trump months ago, possibly even before the electioneering started. He realised the awful possibility and was covering his bases and taking out insurance way back, despite Trumps threats and negative comments at the time.

He's highly intelligent and extremely self-controlled. An amazing person.

Because of Putin's intransigence killing Russians is the only way forward. So be it. It is ok for the west to use tactical nukes in Ukraine (since it is none of Russia's business what they do in Ukraine) and if the Russians don't like it they can leave.

It looks like history is starting up again.

A negotiation that leaves Europe and Ukraine outside isn't one at all.

It's been evident since before the invasion that the russians have 0 interest in a deal that doesn't end up in genocide for Ukrainians.

despite apparently begging to be invited

Some evidence would go nicely here, this is your trumpy post, don't waste it.

I will use the term orcs because they are orcs.

They are the ones who made the choice to embark on their illegal war. They are the ones who are raping, thieving, destroying and murdering their way through occupied Ukraine. Just this week they've been caught executing POW's, using drones to purposely kill civilians in border regions, they've even mounted the heads of dead Ukrainians on spikes.

I suggest you take your faux outrage and explain it to the Ukrainians who are suffering all the orc atrocities 🙄

Zelenskyy absolutely knocking it for six in Davos with words of gold, like:

Europe needs to become more self-reliant, competitive, and decisive to take its rightful place in the world and take charge of its security, because "there’s no ocean separating European countries from Russia"

Ukraine will be fine. Good point being made here that Biden loaded up on funding for Ukraine just before he left office. 2025 funding is already in the bag.

It's all a moot point anyway. As it becomes more clear later this year that it's Ukraine that's winning this war, Trump will be quick to get on their side. Trump backs winners, and Ukraine will win.

The order doesn't apply to military aid for Ukraine.

Trump is right in one regard, that Europe (and i'll include us too) doesn't spend /devote enough to defence. We need to do that at least defend ourselves. In case anyone says we can't stop the Russians or the US from taking us by force that I know and it isn't the point! We can make it difficult and not worth their while bothering.

Ireland giving multiple billions to Ukraine would easily be the the most cost effective defence against Russia and would be my preferred option.

What Trump said in his first term is no longer true. Latvia is spending around 5% of GDP on defence, Estonia around 4%. Best not to mention Ireland.

When you see what these orcs have done and are still doing, the word itself is not big enough to describe them…and that's the only problem that I have with it. Describing it as being de-humanising, how else do you describe sub-human creatures? By their actions ye shall know them….and their actions are definitely not human.

So trump says if Putin doesn't come to the negotiating table he'll likely apply even more American sanctions on them.

FWIW, I agree with you and have commented on this before.

I find it immature, unprofessional and, frankly, undermines the threat that they pose. Our (US Army) opposition in Iraq and Afghanistan had a number of troop-used nicknames, I refused to use any of them. The second you stop considering them intelligent resourceful opponents and respecting them as such, they will surprise you and/or kill you. For all the talk of how awful the Russians have been (and believe me, they've had their moments), they are still pressing Ukraine.

Besides, they haven't gotten around yet to painting their vehicles red.

No, wait, that's orks, isn't it? Not orcs. So what was Mork? An Orkian? Or just an Ork?

how can we make it NOT WORTY THEIR WHILE BOTHERING? How can we counteract their drones, their off shore war ships of all types , c cutting cables at sea, cyber attacks of all types, jamming our defence signals , etc, etc, etc. - and all this without ever setting a foot on Irish soil

Very sensible post. I was just about to ask what people referred to the US and British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as.

    I called this weeks ago.

Trump is starting to look weak already as he hasn’t settled the war in 24 hours.

He won’t like that at all so now he’s doing what he does and throwing his toys out, only this time it’s actually a good thing for Ukraine and the right thing to do even if he’s doing it all for himself.

If you look online there's been a lot of Russian attacks in Kursk. No major collapse and huge losses for Russia. But they'll likely keep going with them indefinitely until they take back the few villages in the northern area. They still rely heavily on north Korean troops to soften up the defences. It'll be interesting if these soldiers get replaced when they're inevitably all dead.

Regardless safe to say Kursk will still be holding come February.

Meh, I grant your argument up to a point but there is also the need to tell the world what Russians really are. They need to be seen for what they are and the world needs to never forget. Orc is a good word for the common man. 'Nazi' has not been forgotten and with good reason. Orc, Nazi they are the same thing in many ways and they need to be called out. The west will be wary in future of buying gas from the Orcs. A depraved nation that has such an inferiority complex they need to kill to feel like they matter. The lid has been lifted on Russia and the world needs a name for what it has seen. More so, the Russians themselves need to look in the Orc mirror and think again.

It looks like history is starting up again.

Do we know is there much scope for this? Is there any reason to think Biden wasn't already putting as much pressure on Russia as he could? Just the other day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,458 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Sort of embarrassing the US can't produce more then 30 of these per month. When trump talks about rebuilding their military and weapons hopefully he means things like this. There shouldn't be just 1 facility building such an important component of the army.

If you ever wonder why the US don't just send more artillery pieces this is a big reason why. What's the point when they wouldn't have the barrels to continuously operate more.

So much blah blah blah until this actually becomes a reality. Bit like climate change pledges: meaningless unless followed by action. The EU promises a lot and delivers little. I hope they heed Zelensky words but not holding breath for it
