Strange issue. I made an online payment to a bank account and the payee is claiming the transaction is not showing up in their account history. I have paid the same person on numerous occasions with no problem and paid then successfully since this vanishing transaction. I can see from my account history that they have been paid. What more can I do? They are adamant the money hasn't reached them. Also checked there are no refunds to my account.

Wake me up when it's all over.

what bank are the 2 accounts in question? Online transfers are much improved in Ireland speed wise so not sure how this could have happened especially if you’ve paid them in the past

Bank statement if you can check to where and to who it went .

Is there a time delay for payments to clear into someone elses account?

Did they give you the right account number. Perhaps they have 2 active accounts with the 1 bank i.e. a family saver and a day to day account and the funds have gone to the account they haven't checked.

I'm paying an account that is set up in my Bol 365 online banking and its been set up for the last 5 or more years. I'm paying an AIB account. I can see the transaction to the correctly named payee on my statement but they say they don't have any indication of the transaction on their statement?

Done that and they say they haven't got the payment.

I'm not paying someone that is a scammer. I know them well and would trust them.

Get onto bank with details to see what happens.

Screenshot or let them see your online banking account if you can see them in person.

Some banks don't let you screenshot but there are ways around that too.

That's an awkward situation. Did you try ringing BOI and seeing if they can help either resolve or prove it to the other party for you?

I had this before with one of our customers. Funds cleared their accounts but never lodged into our account. This was a regular transfers that had been done for years.

For some unknown reason The clearing system marked it as fraudulent unusual activity. Our bank was unable to get them cleared Only way it got resolve was the payee's bank had to request a refund and they paid us by cheque. This took serval months to resolve.

It can happen, there could have been a bug introduced in the banks software which ran for a while and then go fixed later….

If the payment was say more that a month ago and it was to a wrong account it most likely should have been returned to you by now. Check if you have received any credit on the account since you made the payment.

Just call the bank and ask them to do. trace on the payment. The should be able to provide evidence of the payment from your side up to the point it hit the other person's bank from there on they will need to request a trace if necessary.

So to update - they'll get back to me.

Spent half an hour on the phone with BoI and they can see the money has left my account but currently can't really say anymore than that. So they are going to call me back in the next two days after they have investigated further.

    Will update with the result.

Understand that it not point to point, there are a number of intermediaries involved, so it will take some time for each to follow up on it.

The most important thing is to make sure that you receive documentation that you can pass to the payee if necessary as they will need it to kick off a trace on their side if required.

+1 on this. Get details of transaction and ask payee to trace it as well. I was my banks clearing system that stopped the payment

I forget the name of the number but your bank can give you basically a transaction number that they use in their back end for the recipients bank to locate it.

Years ago I worked for a company where customers frequently claimed not to get money.

We'd get them this number and not a single one didn't get their money.

Your bank will be able to fill in the blanks with my memory, it was a few years ago.

No update yet. BoI supposed to ring me when they have the details but so far nothing.

BOI should have been able to provide you a copy of the processed payment by now. If the AIB account is still active to receive money then the most likely scenario is one of BOI or AIB holding the payment for something like Fraud AML or Sanctions. Check that you did not input on your payment any funny terms vague abbreviations or other peoples names on your remittance information it's crazy the amount of random innocent looking phrases that can hold a payment up

If nothing tomorrow when I was promised a call back by one rep it has to be a Formal Complaint as this is getting ridiculous.

What you have not said is to which bank and country the payment was made…. If it was SEPA, you'd expect a response in about a week, it was outside that it could be weeks, outside SEPA things can get very hairy.

Sorry, explained it so many times to people on the phone that I probably thought I already had?

My bank is one side of the road and the other bank is on the opposite side of the road. AIB and BoI.

If it were swift at least you could get the swift message to trace the funds. SEPA is seriously lacking in this traceability

In that case they should definitely have something for you in a week. Give them a call and see what they say.

Did you put anything into the message field? Often payments get stopped by investigation by banks if there is anything that could be perceived to be suspicious even if previous transfers have been made.

eg, there a number of names that appear on sanction lists that would be stopped and reviewed. People have sometimes jokingly put stupid stuff like "IRA membership" etc into these fields, these payments get stopped and manually reviewed in order to be investigated. They go into queues that could have hundreds to be investigated and can be delayed for up to 10 days due to back logs and staff shortages.

Nothing stupid ins the message field. Would have put something like "Payment for November 2024". Can't remember exactly but it will be exactly the same as I put in previous months and since just with the month changed.

On another note you need to be careful what you put in the payment field as it could lead to your bank account being closed. The small print in one UK bank I look after (PoA) it states you cannot put anything defamatory in the message field. I can just image why that was included.

However I can't imagine it was stopped for a specific reason because if it was there would be a note of that somewhere?

It could have just been flagged then for random investigation, this can also happen unfortunately. You won't get an alert or message stating that it has been stopped though for AML reasons, technically this could be deemed as tipping off until the payment is investigated.

The receiver will have to contact their bank to query the status of the funds.

I'm hoping (been promised) a call today so will wait…………………………………………… for that first ;-)

Giving them a call is a total pita. What seems to happen is that the person you call takes charge of replying and has no idea of what has been done by anyone else. Last BoI rep I spoke to (who is calling back today) was working from home and had no idea that someone else was already investigating - not heard back from the first rep either. Hence Formal Complaint if I hear nothing today.

Edit> At the least I expect BoI to manage my expectations and tell me it could take two weeks or whatever to get the info.

Sometimes you just have to call into the bank and make a fuss :(

Thats the plan but promises have been made so I'll wait for them to be broken (but I hope not) before that happens.
