But aren't there already anonymous forums that are popular? Like Reddit? And you can be anonymous anywhere if you wish. What's cool about it?

I think it's harder now. Facebook now want to do some sort of photo thing for new accounts now.

Posting about anon boards being popular on an anon board that is slowly dying.

Provocative and thoughtful at the same time, like a Jim Jarmusch movie…

meta trolling at its best respect Madame/Sir

So why are you hiding behind a alias? Also ashamed?

my reason for posting - boards has become sooo quiet - somewhat due to the changeover I guess.. but it might become busier now.. which would be cool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,251 ✭✭✭sporina

perhaps i should have called this thread "anonymous discussion forums"…

Boards is dead, it just does not know it yet, it's a shame really, some incredible stories, threads, opinions, happenings on here over the years , I only stumbled across it about 10 years ago, caught the sight of the wave breaking I guess.

The changeover/vanilla thing gets a lot of stick, probably fair but the format is in decline everywhere. Reddit is popular enough but write something that's more than a couple of short paragraphs long and your either hit with utter confusion, bewilderment or downvotes and comments about why no TLDR.

It seems like a lot of people don't want to be challenged on their opinions anymore and they don't want to work too hard to form them either, better get them from someone else, I love the irony in people proudly proclaiming who they "follow" for information and insight on xyz platform…

I wonder if anyone reads physical media anymore. It's all so passive, and that makes it easy to distort and control.

The result is well to paraphrase

" you get what we had here this week -- which is the way (Trump, Musk, Putin, Xi) wants it.

    Well, they get it.

And I don't like it anymore than you."

But we all took the eye off the ball and this how we are left, I don't know how we put the shite back up the pigs arse, ain't no cool hand Luke gonna help us that's for sure.

Smoke em while you have em lads and lasses.

this was being discussed on Newstalk - hard shoulder - something about the banning of tik tok - and they were saying that perhaps as a result of this that anonymous online discussion forums may make a come back.. so I thought, wouldn't it be cool if Boards became popular again..

i'm a bit vague on the above as I was in and out of car at the time - but you get my meaning

All such fora should be like boards.ie where you have to use your real name

I could actually see that happen, at least to an extent. From what I've seen, there appears to be a trend away from the always online, sensory overload producing world of social media and smartphones, completely separate from that whole Tik Tok thing. Dumb phones are making a comeback, as are dedicated simple portable games consoles like the Playdate, or even physical journals. Though I don't necessarily agree with this type of minimalism-inspired tech isolationism, given that I remember all to well how it was to juggle three or four separate devices, I can see where this is coming from. And over time, I can see this rolling down to re-popularising forums such as Boards where, in addition to the anonymous aspect, you also don't really have the real-time aspect that makes the "classic" social media platforms so overwhelming at times.

Just on the underlying issues that you diagnosed, I'd just like to add that a lot of this is due to the current structure of our society and economy. When you're working 40+ hours per week only to barely make it to the end of the month with your pay cheque, you very often simply don't have the energy to deal with walls of text in the spare time you have left. And that's before we get into the whole debate around the "hustle culture" phenomenon that has taken hold over the last twenty-odd years. I'm not going to deny that there's a certain cohort that just wants everything spoon-fed to them, but I do feel that a lot of the apathy you described is due to pure exhaustion, both from work and from the ceaseless sensory overload we're exposed to these days.

And that's not just problematic for platforms like Boards. It's problematic for society as a whole. Representative democracy, the political system in place across most of the western world, is reliant on a voter base that is able to critically but constructively engage with both their elected representatives and the issues at hand. As such, a society where increasing numbers of voters need to spend most of their energy just to not get overwhelmed is one where this democracy is at risk of being undermined. And I feel like that is where we're headed…

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

I find it strange that posters who make up fake names and post under those names in a message board are faux shocked that it happens elsewhere 😁😁

That’s Social media not messaging boards like here or Reddit . There’s nothing different as far as I can see

So here is the bad news, you are not anonymous, you only appear to be. And it will always be that way unless you take extraordinary steps to do so. And the second thing is that social media platforms don't need to know you for marketing purposes, they just need to know your behaviour - if you commented on bicycle bells yesterday I even they can sell you as a potential target this morning to an add agency, even if you do use one of those nice anonymous browsers.

I think the poster would ask "But is it your name?". You don't have to answer though, because it's an anonymous forum. 😉

Perhaps if you weren't so bitter in life you might not keep getting banned and having to re-reg.

How cringe is it to go to all that bother. And then to keep coming back again and again.

Although we really should defer to your technical expertise in the comedy area. The quoted post above is your first post under that username………………. The second one was in attacking people saying they didn't find Alison Spittle funny……..which is, ironically, kinda funny

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,325 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Well I'm really sorry that it upsets you so much that you were inspired to re-register. Perhaps we can have a whip around to get you some tickets to some of Allison's gigs to cheer you up?

Who said I was trying to be funny anyway?

    😂

Or a 2% scenario as my LC Accounting teacher used to constantly say.

Could be that the places that they are talking about are the likes of those in the fediverse for example. No trackers, ads, web3, blockchain and so on, mainly targeting towards privacy more than anonymity. But due to having no trackers some people refer to it as anonymous.

The likes of beehaw, fedia, lemmy and so on, better explained here

You are anonymous. As great as boards and Reddit are many people overestimate how much people care about who says what on the internet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,553 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

used to be involved in a music forum and a football forum about 15 years ago. Music one is now like a ghost town, nice bunch of people though, going by usernames seems a couple of other people from here used it too.

A UK based football one also. Got banned from the ‘soccer’ forum here but never thought to try going back to that other football one. Just seeing it’s been given a seriously good looking redesign, liking the layout but i don’t think I’ll be arsed.

I suppose if sprouting hate fill homophobic rants or any hate filled rant isn't giving them enough satasificat anymore they have to find other anonymous forum to see if that will help.
