Limit for overnight stay

I have to travel approximately 4 hours for a meeting and inspection of a large premises. Probably 3 - 4 hours in itself. Should this be entitled to an overnight stay and return to work the next morning on my return or should I be expected to return on the same day after the 8 or so hours travel and meetings, so another 4 hours driving?

Nobody has said either way but I am just not sure if I should request an overnight.

What kind of organisation do you work for? Have they a policy on this? I know mine has clear guidelines on this.

How are you travelling? Driving or public transport?

If you're driving, you need to consider whether it's safe to drive at the end of that day.

Civil service rates (if they apply) some companies use this as a basis, only allows for overnight subsistence if more than 100km from home/normal place of work. 4 hrs travelling would meet that I reckon.

But it would depend on company policy really

But your employer has a duty of care for your safety - do you/they think its safe to drive 8 hrs in one day?

Small company, no real policy in place on this. The owners would do it all in one day to get back for the next but its their company. They likely have the same expectation for staff.

2015 circular allows it to be reduced to 50 kilometres in exceptional circumstances if there's an operational need. I don't know who defines exceptional circumstances though.

If I were doing this I’d stay one night.

If it's a 4 hour drive each way, you shouldn't really be doing a round trip in a day, on top of work for safety reasons.

Now's the time to put manners on them, and draft a policy for them.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Years ago I did Dublin to Killarney return in one day way before the main motorways were done - craic of dawn, was in Killarney for 9am - left for Dublin at 5.30pm - I don’t advise it - after a days work you’ll be shagged tired especially given the very early start - seriously, stay over - it’s not safe
