I think they did alright budget wise. They had 300k budget, then Dermot presented the figures and it went to 315k + 10k consultant fees whatever they were but at the end it came under the 300k mark.

I had a look at the builders website and upstairs you can the bathroom and a main bedroom were finished. I presume the kids rooms were too. If there's a bit more to do it won't cost much to finish. I don't know why they didn't show upstairs, perhaps filming had to end by a certain date and the builder had yet to do upstairs?!?!?!

I think a lot of parents nowadays feel pressure to have their child doing something every evening. Whether it's the one activity like gymnastics or a mix of different sports I think some people think they are failing if they are all at home an evening or 2. It's madness if you ask me especially if it's affecting the parents life balance.

I think it's all caused by money making and parents prioritising their kids winning things over having fun.

more like 11, she seems to love it. My boy plays ball sports 6 times a week (soccer, rugby & gaelic) and wouldn't have it any other way - he is 12

Exactly. The filming end and the builder tidied up the remainder when convenient.

well at least thats 3 different groups, do you have to ferry him to each and stay?

You can grants for energy upgrades. I think there's a link on the player website with a full budget for each program. I don't think green is good color for any kitchen top or surface .

I think Dermot suggests things that he knows will be rejected by the client as it adds abit of drama to the program. I don't think they have any intention of moving but who can predict what the house will be worth when they are of retiring age in 10 or more years .they must be on good wages that they can spend 300k on upgrading a house .

Look those revealed joists with the herringbone bridging don't work for me, I'm almost certain I saw a 2x2 planted on the top of each joist, on closer inspection they would look terrible... I like maybe 2 or three proper load bearing timbers left bare on a tall ceiling but not the way they were done here, drawing the eye to the garden mehole😊…too many timbers look terrible Imv+too much cleaning they are dust traps , have a few decent sized timbers properly prepared if the height allows and leave it at that

No, only do the rugby lifts, we share soccer and Gaelic with 2 different neighbours and I bring their boys to rugby; odd time I or Dad would make a point of going to one of his Gaelic / soccer games.
    keeps him off the screens

I felt that perhaps the couple has different tastes or requirments which they had not discussed until they were picking out finishes. the wife seemed suprised at the kitchen shop when the husband was saying he like the minimal look, with the sink hidden, etc. And he seems to use the words 'I like' throughtout the program. It was never 'we like' or 'we were thinking about' .. the way you describe things as a couple. Maybe it was just me that picked up on this ?

Anyways, back to the house - nice job. But I was a bit shocked at how poorly constructed the original house was. I know it was 1960's. I can understand spending 350k if you inherited it, but after buying it for 400k. It gives people a wake up call if they have romantic dreams of buying an old house to renovate.

400k for a cavity block house as opposed to cavity wall house is a lot of money alright. But they are paying for the site really. The cavity block construction isn't worth much insulation and damp proofing wise but to replace it is expensive.

They seemed surprised to find it was cavity block which is surprising as a pre purchase engineers report should have highlighted this. Maybe it did and they didn't pay attention to it or else they knew and pretended not to for the sake of having a 'suprise' problem to add a little drama.

    rough start this week

It's gonna be an emotional one. Hope she gets what she wants. She deserves it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

why is demot here at all. she has a plan and planning and a builder lined up .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

what builder can go from pricing to breaking ground in 2 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,779 ✭✭✭Deeec

I hope this family gets a lovely home and get what they want and not what Dermot wants.

I don't think there was a need for the production team to film the QS speaking to the lady during the memorial walk- it seemed very insensitive.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but it is genuine,

why would you do a renovation when you can build a 3 bed for €275,000 the budget. I checked daft and there’s a few 3 beds at that price and that price includes land it would be less when you have own land, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Westernview

I don't think you'd build an architecturally designed 3 bed for that. The 3 beds on daft probably have much lower energy ratings as well.

This is all about the house that her and her late husband Dom bought as their forever home.

There was also some fundraising to finish the job that they had started

I don’t understand if she has 270,000 why price a job exactly at that price .. why not plan a job for 230,000 and have the remainder to fund the extras that no doubt will come up .. he should be working as close to her plans as possible.. the house wasn’t the worst I have seen .. good builder would have done the job she wanted without his involvement ..

did they lay the blocks with the tractor and loader or what

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Westernview

Once he was involved you couldn't expect him to keep to the original plans. But yeah you'd wonder why he is involved at all.

Love aughris, gorgeous place. If I didn't live I Donegal. MTB park on the other side of the hill

Too many fake arguments, all that is in planning.

It's already shaping up to be another one that the client isn't happy with a lot of things but will be delighted at the end. I thought this would be a more straightforward one.

you show me a house that you can build for that little including the site in 2025

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 276 ✭✭balanced24

thanks for replying, I thought all new builds would be A rated. I get they’d be cookie cutter houses on daft too. So that’s what makes them that price.

Well that green hay shed is awful. Just missing a few bales outside

Sorry I understand that I meant in general but I get it now, the daft houses wouldn’t be A rated and they are cookie cutter houses not architecturally uniquely designed
