I have heard the name mentioned alright over nearly two years now (allowing for the fact that we are into 2025!) across various websites. Who is involved with Radio Cuckoo and what part of Ireland does it operate from? Is long-running Premier Radio International still on the go on short wave (I know it is online)?

The two AM pirates are still on, and they have websites. A lot of their air time is being sold to preachers. I was in Cavan around Christmas. Heard a station on 88.0 with Country 'n Irish music no speech content. In the style of Misty Mountain Radio which used to be on 99.4. Maybe someone around Cavan could check if that is still on. Also a station on 107.1 playing Christmas religious music. Adeste Fidelis and the like. No speech content on that one either.

More pirates than ever on SW, but it is not usually apparent where they are coming from. Some can be strong on the SDR's in Ireland.

88 is still on as i type and I think it must be Misty as it's about the same strength as 99.4 was.

I picked up a station on 87.5FM around Lucan & Liffey Valley today. Didn’t last long called ‘80s’.

Is that the return of one of those low powered pirate stations that used to cover that area of Dublin up to a couple of years ago? If it is a pirate, is that the first pirate activity in Dublin since about 5th December 2024, when Connect FM and The 90s Network were raided? Edit: Those raids were exactly a month ago!

Energy Ratoath on 103.0 & RetroNow on 105.7 in Meath at the weekend.

I presume you meant to link to my previous post from yesterday - added above! It is interesting that those two pirates from Co. Meath were still on the go towards the end of 2024.

A couple of times in the past my car radio switched to 87.5 music, and then it went away. I was baffled until I realised I must have been in the vicinity of another car with a Bluetooth transmitter. 87.5 is the default frequency for those devices. Of course your reception was from a real station. Anyone interested can see these on YouTube videos.

Won't be Bluetooth but just an ordinary low power FM transmitter.

Nation Radio are turning off two of Radio Pembrokeshire's FM relays in South West Wales, both on 107.5FM. R. Pembs on this frequency has been received in Cork in the past during periods of high pressure.

    https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/12/nation-broadcasting-to-turn-off-four-fm-transmitters-in-scotland-and-wales/

It'll be interesting to see if this catches on down the road over here also, with cutbacks to programming eventually taking to the transmission networks. Networking could also play a part, for example should there be significant networking between stations with neighbouring sites. (iRadio 102.1/Spin 102.7, Beat 102.2/RedFM 105.1 etc).

radio pembrokshire receivable in wexford town on 105.7 all the time. Wont be long now for fm closures in dublin .Stations chasing a youth audience that no longer exists.

The ongoing battle between FM104 and Spin would disprove that theory. Also worth mentioning that Radio Pembrokeshire broadcast on DAB too which unfortunately we don’t utilise in this country (but probably should).

The other Radio Pembrokeshire frequency of 102.5 is an absolute beast btw .. regularly audible in Dublin and Wicklow

Was in Mullingar earlier and Spirit were on a blank carrier on 87.6. Just RDS.

The Radio Times, Northern Ireland edition is also well out of date. One page 284 they list Radio 4 on 720 and 774 kHz, Downtown on 1026, Absolute on 1215 and RTE on 252.

Might be worthy of its own thread...

The new programme for government includes a proposal for an Irish language radio station aimed at younger listeners .

    Ri-Ra immediately jumps to mind.

The proposal is included under the Irish Language header thus it would be fair to say that the proposal would be heavily subsidised by tax payers .

Some very good reception in Dundalk from England and Wales. No doubt due to the high pressure. All the BBC nationals from Sandale in Cumbria, which also carries Radio Scotland on 94.7. And Radio 4 from Blaenplwyf on 104.0 which I don't think I got before. Llanddona, Radio Cymru on 94.2, and BBC Radio 1 fighting with Lyric from Longford on 99.4.

Nothing too exceptional, but they were very strong at times in the car and on a small portable around the house.

Ive often wondered why Camlough never followed the Blaen Plwyf frequency allocations

i.e. why is Radio 4 from Camlough the odd one out, being on 104.6MHz

Could this be because Shannonside were on 104.1 first?

Mind you - that may not have been a factor considering they originally came on from Camlough on 88.6, 90.8, 93.0, 98.0 and 104.6 - RTE were linking to Clermont off Three rock at the time and everything suddenly became hissy

98fm had a mickey fit as they were flattened across huge swathes of North Co. Dublin

All the BBC FM nationals were stomping into D15 on Wednesday as well - full clean stereo and RDS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭TheBMG

never knew of those original frequencies! I do recall thinking that they were quite close to the Three Rock frequencies even with that revised allocation.

It only lasted around 2 weeks - March 1993
They all moved up by 0.1MHz in late March (except Radio 4 which remained on 104.6)

nice to hear 1206am back on/off in Dublin (they seemed to be having minor tech problems). Relaying KCRW from LA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,570 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It may well be the only pirate running in Dublin for the forseeable future!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭TheBMG

seems to be. All the others running scared perhaps? C’mon lads and lassies, get the pirate spirit going again … ooh arrr

I was in and around the Sandyford area of South Dublin yesterday afternoon and I noted the signal on 1206Khz AM. Listening on a car radio, it seemed weaker than previous broadcasts, but heading back to North East Wicklow later in the evening, it appeared to be stronger - may have been the nightfall propagation effect. It was great to be hearing Casey Kasem on pirate Nova all the way home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Orban6

Was passing thru Mullingar again and still seems to be a blank carrier. Does anybody care? As an aside, I recall the Midlands 103 low power relay in Castlepollard was for years just a blank carrier. When it returned with audio, it was relaying Today FM! Standards have slipped.

Given the significant damage caused by Storm Eowyn across Connacht, has anyone noticed FM transmitters being off air? Between physical damage and power outages there are surely quite a few

2RN reporting outages at Monaghan, Kilkeveragh, Cnoc an Oir, Crosshaven, Glenties, Magheraroarty, Clonmany, Letterkenny, Glencolumbkille, Casla, Tonabrocky, Lahinch and Forth Mountain

I'd suspect it was run on lower power initially, and later the power was increased. There should be no increase in signal strength at night on local mediumwave signals which travel by 'groundwave' rather than 'skywave' (which brings in distant signals at night). If anything, local medium wave signals may deteriorate at night due to incoming skywaves from distant stations - however as we know that is not an issue on 1206 since the closure of Absolute on AM in the UK, it became very clear at night.

They have also tried 1197 instead of 1206 in recent weeks:

    https://x.com/IBHallofFame/status/1878612735778529649

however I don't think it has been on this weekend (on either 1206 or 1197 ?)

Meanwhile, of note on FM, the temporary licence run of Classic Hits 80s finished up at 6PM today.

And Radio Ri-Ra is back on the same transmitters/ 4 cities for a few days to the 31th January.

Casey Kasem is dead and burried in Oslo Norway, after an argument between his ex wifes and their children.

His shows are repeated every now and then but I don't know many stations that do that. AFN Joe Radio (on AFN Go) does them every Saturday and Sunday morning. ( IP address of a NATO country needed to listen )

Galway Bay FM had a significant outage. All FM transmission was affected for sometime, no idea how long. I understand they had mast issues at the studio.
