Must admit they left me fairly cold tonight. I'm only a casual fan so i ended up slightly bored for chunks of it. Think i expected a more visceral musical experience in the live arena. A 6/10 from me but for a real fan of the band it was probably a much better gig than i'm giving credit for.

Is there a 2025 Gig Review thread? Haven't seen it if there is.

I was looking for it last night as well. Not there yet. What did you think of Stratford Rise?.

Seefeel, Drogheda Arts Centre, Saturday 3rd May.

Very excited for this one. Hats off to Drogheda Arts Festival and Thirtythree-45 promotions, every year they seem to get at least one unexpected leftfield act that grabs my attention.

Article in today’s Irish Times that some here will find interesting……

Coldplay’s Croke Park outing brings in €44.5m in bumper year for Irish gigs

U2′s Sphere in Las Vegas shows win out in ‘top 300 worldwide concert grosses’, according to Pollstar data

The €44.5 million generated in ticket sales at the box office for Coldplay’s four sold out nights at Croke Park last year helped promoters MCD Productions to a record €238.5 million in 2024 sales.New figures from trade journal Pollstar show Coldplay’s Dublin shows in front of 329,000 fans during August and September was the band’s most lucrative set of gigs anywhere in the world last year.

The concerts ranked third in its “top 300 worldwide concert grosses”, with U2′s two strings of shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas taking the top two places with a combined box office of $134.72 million (€131 million). Average ticket prices for the U2 gigs were $352 (€342). Coldplay’s Dublin appearances helped the band generate $421 million in global ticket sales, ranked second only to Taylor Swift’s $1 billion Eras tour.

Almost half a million music fans attended Croke Park last year – 489,507 revellers paid out $76.49 million (€74.4 million) to attend gigs at the GAA headquarters.Pollstar ranks Croke Park the tenth busiest stadium venue in the world for concert attendances and the third in Europe last year, easily outstripping the 229,909 music fans who attended gigs at Wembley Stadium in London.

Along with Coldplay, 82,298 AC/DC fans paid $14.3 million to see them play at the outdoor venue. On the back of Taylor Swift gigs, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last year generated $49 million in box office sales after 256,482 attended concerts there. In a bumper year for Irish artists, the Pollstar figures show that 85 shows by Niall Horan generated $68 million at the box office after just over one million fans paid to see the Mullingar singer-songwriter during the year.Hozier also narrowly passed the 1 million mark in 2024 when fans paid out $57.64 million to see the ‘Too Sweet’ singer songwriter play 68 shows. Both artists are in the top 50 worldwide tours for 2024.The thriving live music scene resulted in a “best ever year” for Denis Desmond’s Gaiety Investments joint venture with Live Nation, MCD Productions selling a record 2.92 million tickets. The $245 million in ticket sales for MCD last year had the Irish firm ranked 10th in the world in terms of box office revenues – the average cost of an MCD ticket was €81.33.

One of the main drivers of MCD’s ticket sales last year was Taylor Swift’s Aviva series, part of the European leg of her ERAS tour. However, box office returns for those gigs are not available as the artist chose not to report her individual figures.

a local councillor asking a county council to enquire with Fontaines managers about possibly doing a show in 2026.
    wouldn’t put much on it

The two local lads (Deegan and Coll) have regularly stated they want to play in their hometown. Local politicians following up on that make it difficult for the GAA to refuse, and they recently agreed a Connacht rugby game at McHale.. Also not an organisation known for turning down cash.

Likely to happen, if not in 2025 then in 2026.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,947 ✭✭✭Fanirish

local band members saying “ yeah I love to play my hometown one day” is not worth any weight behind it.

Local politicians especially councillors have no power in getting GAA to rent out their stadium for a concert.

also any such concerts needs a credible promoter/organiser who wants to risk hundreds of thousands on such a show.

No promoter will would risk money trying to do a 10,000 - 20,000 gig for Fontaines in that venue.

It has close to zero chance of happening, especially not this year as ATN is exclusive summer show here and no doubt for 2026 they will have another exclusive summer show possibly EP that excludes them from doing that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,663 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

ATN is not an Irish exclusive for the Fonts.

And you think a 20k to 25k Fontaines show in Mayo is a risk for a promoter? Seriously? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,237 ✭✭✭crl84

They did 26k in Dublin which didn't sell out immediately, but took a few weeks.

Farnirish is right, 25k in Castlebar is absolutely a risk and extremely unlikely that any promoter would take a chance on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,947 ✭✭✭Fanirish

yeah ATN is summer exclusive for the Fontaines in the Republic of Ireland at least. ATN requires that as part of its contract, same goes for EP.

Fontaines doing a 20k -25k show in castlebar would be sure way to lose hundreds of thousands of euros.
the 2 johnnies would sell multiples more in castlebar than Fontaines

Promoters are seriously risk averse outside Dublin. Look at the absolute state of the lineup for The Marquee and Virgin Media Park this year in Cork. The VMP lineup looks like its from 2005 rather than 2025.

I know it does and have no problem with that but not all the acts need to be legacy acts whose heyday was 20-30 years ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,663 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

2/5 of the band are local in an area recently starved of live outdoor music. The catchment area is the whole of Connacht, and further afield. This year or next as above. Don't underestimate quite how huge this band are in 2025.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,154 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

They are making so much profit from the big Dublin gigs as per

@Gloomtastic! 's post above they can afford to be risk averse elsewhere .

It's a shame though because as said before it is exactly this sort of business model ( large stadium gigs ) that are killing off the medium size gigs and smaller venues closing .If not here as yet certainly happening in the UK and that is a warning for anyone interested in small / medium venues and younger musicians and bands coming up .

I'll stop now because have said this before and am sure it's not what some people want to read here 😬

Incorrect. Fontaines a FESTIVAL exclusive for ATN. Nothing to stop them doing other dates, and pretty likely they will.

Please don't add to the consistently false info you post about them, Electric Picnic a definite booking for last year and other guesswork. #SayNoToSpoofing2025

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 16,018 Mod ✭✭✭✭Furious-Red

Tbf it may be a festival exclusive but there could be small writing saying you can't play/announce a headline show in Ireland a certain amount of time before or after ATN.

I think they could do it next year, bill it as the final date of the current album cycle and stack it with decent support etc. Btw I'm not a fan of them but still think they could pull a decent crowd that neck of the woods

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,947 ✭✭✭Fanirish

the reality is that new or more recent acts that could easily sell 15,000 tickets for virgin media park in cork are too much in demand and the fee is not enough for them to play a secondary city like cork.
It may be hard to grasp but it’s often hard for promoters to get even one summer date off an artist/agent if the artist is popular across europe. They have too many offers in and not enough available dates for the artist and offers for smaller cities like cork, Limerick, Galway etc just might not make sense.

Even at a level like Galway big top for 2025 it’s announced acts are all Irish/uk/Scotland so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,947 ✭✭✭Fanirish

they are not just a festival exclusive they are a summer exclusive. It’s written into the contract as it’s a standard term for the top 3 headliners at both ATN/EP.

i don’t post consistently false info, on few occasions what was tentatively agreed has changed. It’s sometime happens in the months between autumn and late spring when summer plans for bands get crystallised. What was agreed one week can be changed because of other offers/health and any other reasons

anyone know roughly what the national opera house costs to rent, I’ve heard it’s expensive hence it sits empty for most of the year, the acoustics are unreal for live bands

As before the Fonts have not been announced as an exclusive unless you have a clear accredited source for such. Thus free to play elsewhere. Dublin likely I would say, possibly again with Kneecap doing Marlay.

You stated that the band were never going to play EP 2024, not a chance you stated. When challenged by a poster who said they were booked you did a u-turn and claimed they were a definite booking. A few weeks later you said that was incorrect. Consistent in your inconsistency.
