Cossie in the media briefing said Munster are close to making an announcement on more signings but nothing on the head coach yet.

He also said 3 players had PBs in the game last Saturday, was full of praise for all the players

The head coach situation is a bit if a sh1t show at this stage tbh.

Nothing from Flanagan since the Rowntree departure iirc.

Very frustrating & a bit of a 2 fingered salute to the fans at this stage

I am glad the players and coaching team gave a two fingers salute to the media and opposition cheerleaders who have spent years talking down Munster.

Whilst I don't rate Flanagan, Munster have dealt with the head coach situation reasonably well. They clearly want to get the right (best possible) candidate and moved quickly to lock down the coaching team they wanted etc. Costello gives them stability in the interim.

The whole situation is far from ideal, but being dealt with the best way possibly.

why do you think the “situation” is a bit of a sh1t show exactly?

What would you expect to hear from Flanagan that you haven’t heard from Cossie ?

As long as they get the right coach for the long term , the current coach can keep things ticking along

Leave out the “2 fingered salute to the fans “ nonsense.

'It might frustrate people but it's such a big decision' - Costello on Munster head coach search

If it's not a "situation" then what exactly is it?

Let's call it a predicament so. Head coach, forwards coach & s&c head all gone mid season

If prendergast gets the role then it is laughable...why not give it to him now or earlier.

Boyd departs in 2 weeks. Will he be replaced short term again? Who knows

Unacceptable imo that any CEO would remain this silent.

Speak to the fans, pity he didn't get the FAI role as this silent approach would fit in well with them based on previous goings on in that organisation.

He should be out front & centre as the head of a massive brand that is munster besides kicking it to Costello.

But sure maybe it's just me & there is no "situation" & all this is very normal run of the mill communication/or lack of stuff within a club.

Why would the CEO be front and center? Costello is the defacto DoR. He's the face of the organisation. He's in charge of the search for the new coach.

And what Costello said sounds reasonable enough.

"We've got a meeting later this month and that will involve IRFU, PGC etc, Chris (Boyd) has had some input. We'll sit and talk about it... about looking at our structure, looking around at getting the best fit for a head coach and they are ongoing conversations.

"I said this before and it might frustrate people but it's such a big decision, how it all fits, and it's the middle of the season as well.

"We need to get it right and we don't feel under any pressure internally to speed that up despite the fact that maybe people on the outside are counting down 10 weeks, 12 weeks, whatever.

"This is about getting it right for Munster so that we continue to build on what we've done over the last couple of years.”

I think it is pretty reasonable. The best candidates simply won't necessarily be available in November. No one was going to come in mid-season, so ultimately what difference does it make?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,607 ✭✭✭50HX

Is no pressure internally another way of saying we have who want buy he/they are not available til season end?

Are ye happy enough with Flanagans silence in all of this?

I get the frustration from the fans about getting the mushroom treatment but I also see this from the corporate point of view, why would Flanagan want to re-open the issues around why we parted ways with Rowntree and almost certainly there isn't a CEO in the world who gives media updates on who they're head hunting. We all knew at the time that mid season isn't a great time to be looking for a new head coach, I think we're lucky to have had Costello in the role that he has as he was a safe pair of hands as an interim head coach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,607 ✭✭✭50HX

I agree having Costello has been good, it could have been worse, im not knocking him

When we exit the CC & "if" we get a poor run in the urc let's see where frustration levels ate then.

Flanagan was quoted after GR departure & I'm sure he will be heard from when new appointment is made...but nothing in the interm

Maybe I don't understand the roles enough but it's all very we are where we are stuff.

They are pretty much saying the same stuff as 12weeks ago.

Put it to bed then & get the hierarchy to come out and say it will be end of season before all of this is sorted

If it happens before that then it's bonus territory.

i think you're getting worked up for nothing.

Cossie came out with a perfectly good response, 5 or 6 posts above this from Cookiemunster.

lets worry about getting bodies off the treatment table and back on the pitch.

Let's see where we are come Easter time.

There are issues to resolve outside of putting names to positions.

    Onwards to northampton we go

Team for Saturday. Northampton being a more free flowing team than saracens

Bluler, Barron, Jager, Beirne, Ahern, POM, Hodnett, Coombes, Murray, Crowley, Daly, Scannell, Farrell, Nash, Haley.

Not much room for movement in the starting with the lengthy injury list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,719 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

    Bleuler is gone, I believe.

Be great to have POM back but he didn't feature in the warm up last week so I wonder if he's ready

Pom has played as many games for Ireland this year as he has for Munster.

He's been injured more than he is fit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭CONSI

and POM back in the Irish setup again this 6 nations, the whole POM/Munster situation seems strange this season. Has he played at all since the All blacks game.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,751 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

He played against Stade and Castres. He went off injured in the second half of the Castres game.

Fineen Wycherly had a super game last week, would be tough to drop him. I'd play Aherne at y and POM to bench. Niall Scannell is key to our set piece, wouldn't drop him either.

The Daily Mail in the UK says Dan Kelly is "on the verge of signing for Munster".

Would be interesting. A proper 12. Hard carrier, good hands. He was very, very good when bursting onto the scene a few years ago but has since had a few injury setbacks.

The Daily Mail in the UK says Dan Kelly is "on the verge of signing for Munster".

I feel like this story comes up every year?

But yeah, he'd be a good signing, still young and eligible for Ireland again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 shimmieandshake

Might be wrong, but I don't think he ever played for England, despite being in squads. Maybe he played in a non-capped game or something?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure he'd be Irish qualified.

He's also totally out of the England picture despite Borthwick being in charge. Fit, but not getting minutes at Leicester.

The move makes sense for him.

    Edited:

Capped by England once in 2020 April 2021, so he could switch to Ireland now.

To switch allegiance due to heritage is a three-year stand-down.

The five-year rule is for an uncapped player to gain qualification in a country other than their own and have no recent ancestry.

It was July 2021, so it would be 2026/27 before he's IQ again.
