They'll never change the way they operate. They deal in misery and division as that's what creates more engagement.

Studies are already showing that young people can't communicate effectively face to face, with many choosing to engage mainly via social media even when in the same room as the person.

There's a major epidemic of loneliness and depression as people lose these skills. If we had any sense, we'd just ban them and save the country. If others choose to destroy themselves overtime by keeping them accessible then they'll suffer the consequences.

Yes I can see how harmful that is. Do you think that banning social media (perhaps on an individual level) should be attempted for people under a certain age?

I think I may have seen this coming into force in the odd country.

Are there certain people who actually think that this kind of "social atomization" is a good or a harmless thing?(people who think it is a good form of social control perhaps?)

The solution is simple. Stop calling it 'Social Media'. Call it 'Loner Media'. Because that's what it actually is, and if you start addressing it as such it will be gone in two weeks. Definitely one year.

this is a horrendous solution.

We already see online armies of Israel and india defenders who mass report anybody who even suggests they arent the best people or cultures ever. Im sure more groups has their mass reporting armies to the ready . you think this is a good idea?

The phrase hate speech is so vague - it usually boils down speech the receiptaent doesn't like.

Are minority group above reproach that we must all like them?

Freedom of speech should be the standard we uphold or are no different to the dictators we piss and moan over.

Calls to actually harm people is incitement and that's a crime (as it should be ) but banning statements of dislike related to a certain group(s) is just political censorship.

The UK is is bringing in a law that says all UK adults will have to upload photo is or credit info if they want to visit porn websites .

So far no country in the world has managed to build a age verification system that is not a danger to privacy or unusable or ineffective .

Of course course there's no way that tech aware smart teens will get around this barrier .

A few small things.

One of the matrices for child neglect should be a child under 12 with accesses to a smart phone with unmonitored internet and social media. The parents would be give training and support.

No defense of mental health when cases are prosecuted and part of the sentencing should include restricted or no access to social media for a set amount of time.

A media campaign reminding users that the internet is not anonymous including the like of Telegraph or burner phones

Although if you were a conspiratorial mind set, maybe the authorities want Telegraph users to think they can be anonymous.

The UK has an Online Safety Act that basically means you either don't watch the adult stuff or you use a VPN which would need a credit card. That would keep most of the children off those vile American sites.
