The figure I gave was 15k/16k, as 'closer' to the Kingspan 18k, not that actual number.

And why not buy the dogs out? Too late now but they'll be gone within a decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭RonnieL

Agreed. JJ being available presents an interesting selection challenge. A place on the bench for him I'm guessing, with Jack missing out on the 23 (again)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Id love to agree the dogs will be gone shortly but there is no political will to make that happen.

The greyhound board get more direct funding from central government than the GAA, FAI and IRFU combined. You don't get that funding without somewhere to run them and, I think I remember reading, that shelbourne park and the sports ground are the only two tracks that don't lose money so can't see them cutting it anytime soon.

maybe connacht could have access to a higher capacity stadium for those "big" games alone, im not au fait with the ins and outs over there? Similarly to how Leinster use the Aviva for their marquee games.

having a 15 / 16k stadium though and only filling it to 50% (which would be a great achievement) for a regular game would be waste though, and atmosphere destroying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,342 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

from WIKIPEDIA (not an entirely dependable source)

'In March 1998, the track was converted to sand from grass but the owners and breeders were frustrated at the funding levels by the Bord na gCon.

In 2003, the track was subject to a major renovation project that cost the Bord na gCon €6 million.

In recent years the stadium has raced on the Friday and Saturday evenings and was also subject to criticism over attendance figures, which were distorted by TV requirements.'

So a State funded organisation spent 6 million euro in 2003. What would be the equivalent cost in 2025 ?.

Now the State is putting 20 million into The Sportsground.

Not sure about the value proposition at all. But, hey, this is where we are.

Yep, that seems to be the popular opinion and I've been convinced. If not clashing with GAA matches then surely Pearse & McHale could be used. The downside of being away from the Sportsgrounds is greater away support and possibly a less intense, less intimidating atmosphere as say Arsenal found out when they moved their Champions League games to Wembley and lost or drew all of them. Worth the risk though and loads of extra cash for the club.

When done up it's more than enough for what Connacht need. A proper main stand with seated areas, better corporate area with pitch views.

They couldn't get rid of the dogs. The galway track is one of the busier/more successful tracks. Alog with shelbourne tho some of the very small tracks also operate off small operational profits even though feck all attend live racing in them

It really shouldn't be closer to ravenhills capacity. Compare ulsters population to connachts for one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,739 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

The population comparison is irrelevant compared to the interest in the sport. Could Ulster have sold 26,000 tickets if they moved an interprovincial game to Enniskillen, Newry, Clones or Letterkenny? I'd venture that there's not a hope in hell they would. The game is at its peak in our province (helps that two of the top 30 players on the planet play for us) despite a mixed season. However it could proceed well from here, particularly in the Challenge cup. Don't underestimate how popular the sport has become on the back of our international success.

2 of the top 30 players? Who? Aki and ....

And I'm not sure about Aki.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,051 ✭✭✭✭phog

The Sportsground is within walking distance from the city, currently it's a fairly bleak spot but the new stand and corporate facilities will be a huge boost for Connacht Rugby.

I would like more terracing behind the goals but if it's not happening now then maybe it can phase 2 if the numbers dictate adding more spectator space.

Using one off games as the guide to your expected week to week attendances is not a great idea, Munster can sell out PuC but don't get those numbers for your URC pool games, Leinster sold out Croke Park for their InterPro with Munster, yet you see empty seats at the RDS for the average URC pool games.

The moving of the game and subsequent sell out should be rightly applauded and encouraged. Hopefully it will be repeated.

It's absolutely brilliant, and it could be a springboard to exciting things. Even if it's not, it's a great standalone achievement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,365 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

Agreed. Even if they repeated this same fixture this time next year to less demand (12k+) in a non-Galway venue for a game or two then McHale in March 2025 would be worth it as a stepping stone of realisation (apologies).

I think what will realistically end up happening is Connacht will try pre-season games against top teams. If a top 14 or English side knew they'd get 10k it'd surely attract them.

Yeah Aki had a great 2023-24. Think he was a nominee for WPOTY IN 23. But he hasn't been in that sort of form this season. Hopefully he will be in the 6 Nations.

On current form, I wouldn't put Hansen in the top 30 players in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,739 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

Aki still top 30 worldwide (minimun) in every poll for 2024.

Hansen therefore unworthy of a Six Nations squad place? And thus clearly no chance of making the Lions squad.

In all likelihood, given the demand they'd probably have sold out McHale Park at its former capacity of 38,000. You've also got to assume that those who missed out would be very keen to go if it's staged again in 2026, particularly if we don't get soaked in Castlebar at the end of March.

Aki, Bealham, Blade, Hansen, and Prendergast all part of the squad and Forde and Ben Murphy in as development players

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,334 ✭✭✭MarinersBlues

That's super, delighted for Forde and Prendergast in particular.

    No I didn't say that.

And I don't think he should make the Lions on his form so far this season. There are other wingers playing better. Now he could have a fantastic 6 Nations and in that case he'll probably get picked for the Lions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

McHale during this year is a great idea and in hinsight we should have put the home Ulster game in Markievicz park..

If for nothing else, to embarrass the Galway GAA and Pearce Stadium… There attitude was shameful and I have supported Galway GAA for a lot longer than Connacht Rugby. It was small minded and weak not having it offered for the Leinster home game.

Galway GAA really try and make it harder for us to support them… Why do they do that… We are all from Galway..

That away match in Glasgow looking a hell of a lot harder now than it already would have been. Down to third choice 9 and 12.

Unfortunately looks like Gavin won’t be back in time. Would have been a good chance for himself and Matthew Devine to stake a claim. Could we see a John Devine debut? More than likely will see Hawkshaw there.

    You stated this morning, unambiguously:
“On current form, I wouldn't put Hansen in the top 30 players in Ireland.”

Given the squad was due to be announced it’s clear you didn’t think he was good enough for it. Best of luck getting anyone to agree with you.

Hansen will probably make the Lions squad. Pretty impressive for someone you believe is off-form and not amongst the best 30 players in this country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭Strand1970

Delighted to see Forde and Murphy in as development players and very surprised to see Blade made the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,217 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

Yes. I said on current form, I wouldn't rate him in the top 30 players in Ireland. I made no mention of him missing the 6 Nations squad. In fact I said that if he had a good 6 Nations, he'd be in the Lions conversation.

As I'm sure you're aware, squads are selected with positions in mind. The links you posted made no mention of positions, just ranked players. Also a big factor in squad selections is previous history, past performances at that level etc. And Hansen has credit in the bank there.

Question for you, do you think Hansen has been in good form this season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,739 ✭✭✭✭Seathrun66

You stated that AFTER I pointed out that he’d definitely make the Six Nations squad and probably the Lions. Your backtracking is obvious unless you go back and edit your posts.
To believe he’s not in the top 30 players is pretty dumbfounding.

And to answer your question I believe he’s in sufficient form for both the Irish and Lions squad. He gives options to both sides that no one else does. As will be shown over the next six months. He’ll be in Australia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,217 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

So you agree, I never said anything about him not making the 6 Nations squad. You mentioned the 6N and my next post agreed that he'd be in the squad. No backtracking anywhere.

Your answer to my question sums up where we disagree. You think his form this season has not just been good but good enough to be a Lion. I think his form this season has been very average and a long way off previous seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Hansen was on fire in 2023, he obviously took the pre-RWC conditioning very seriously and entered the tournament in incredible shape. He was notably leaner and faster than previously. He maintained that form for us after the tournament, until he got injured. He hasn't been at his best this season. It's hard to know if it's the residual effect of the injury, or if the quality of the Connacht pre season wasn't as good as the Ireland pre season the year before, but he just doesn't look as sharp currently. No doubting he'll come back into form though, it doesn't help that he's playing for two teams performing below their potential in attack, which makes it harder for him to play his game.

He was the Irish players player of the year for 2024.
