@drunkmonkey Like you, I have hit the end of the road with CPAP. It is too expensive considering I can't keep it on for more than 30 minutes to an hour. I contacted the consultant but was sent back to Resmed. I told both I have really tried for 6 months. Eventually the consultant said I should try a 'Mandibular Advancement Device'. I have to get one made by a dentist apparently, so I have an appointment with my dentist next week to discuss it. If any of you out there have used one please let me know what you thought of it.

@Hontou I contacted my dentist he hasn't came back to me on it though. I dunno if it's a solution either, there's so many variables, I've been trying lots of things, I can see every night what makes a difference and what doesn't. I cut out coffee after reading the book, that seems to have moved the needle a little bit, salt machine seems to have helped another bit, I need to go back and do the exercises properly in the book and stick to it as that seemed to make a difference as well, sleep position makes a difference, all the little twirks are having a combined effect.

I think the book is worth a read, it's only been on Amazon a few weeks but the reviews are good, a lot of it makes sense, he's a few videos on YouTube as well. I've no idea if it's gonna work but for the price of a book it can't hurt. He goes through all the things like cpap, surgery, splints etc. (he claims you don't need any of them, I'm sceptical but giving it a go).

I downloaded the ebook onto my laptop, which was handy as it meant I could look at the links provided as I was reading. I have read about half of it or so, and it makes some sense, if you followed it through you would not do yourself any harm and could do some good. He does not say you should stop using cpap but you should make progress with his methods then wean yourself off as appropriate.

All the stuff he suggests is harmless and straighforward, I am just recovering from a cold/strep throat at the moment so having difficulty doing anything but I may give it a go when I am functioning.

He did offer a rather random test, which I did, and as a result he advised me I had 1 to 5 years to live, which I was a bit unimpressed by!

I'm the same, 4 Xmas nights out and the dose finally caught up with me, hopefully be able to breathe properly in the next few days.

I done his hold your breath test at the start of the book, managed 9 seconds, up around 20 now. I gave the extra few quid for the 14 day plan then I got the cold.

I noticed from uploading the cpap stats to the cloud when the cpap has to start the heavy lifting I was over 40 breaths per minute. Samsung app is now showing me around 20 so something has changed. He might be right about the fast breathing causing the airways to get tighter when the oxygen dips.

From the extra tests it's my neck and soft palate need the most work according to him.

I wouldn't worry about the 1 - 5yrs, you mustn't have held out for the good news bit.😀

On seperate note, did anyone ask Santa for anything, better sleep related.

Tempted to ask for the Ozlo Sleep buds as it's something I wouldn't buy myself. The therabody goggles or even the bob and brad ones look better for half the price.

The thinking is the less I'm disturbed at night the better my sleep, the 6yr old and Dog woke me up twice last night.

I was thinking about a CPAP memory foam pillow for side sleepers.

For me it is weight related, my Apnea events have nearly gone, weighing up options in new year. But I lost nearly a third of my starting body weight.

I'd suggest not to bother. It may suit you though. I have one, its been in the wardrobe since about 2 days after I got it.

same here. Told that if I lose weight that I may not need to use the machine. I found out this to be true in my case . I went from 94 kg to 83kg over one year.

Congrats thats impressive,I've dropped 38Kg in 2 years (or 30% bodyweight), still falling and apnea events are hovering around 1 event per hour.

My Diet is Saxenda GLP-1 Injections, newer variants are called Ozempic & Zepbound(not offically available).

If you have Sleep Apnea, High blood pressure, high BMI( others also ). Go to your doc and there is a HSE program where this covered under DPS capped all qaualifying meds @ €80 p/m?

It's a miracle drug with wide ranging benefits, too many to list here.

Check it out and speak to your Doc.

Hi all. Looking for some feedback

I have a DeVilbiss SleepCube with a humidifier for nearly 10 years now. Until recently, I didn't really have any issues with 'rainout' ie condensation in the tube and mask.

It's been happening more frequently. I have adjusted heat, moved to the floor etc. I have the tube covered.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

I own the machine as opposed to renting.

I’m finally on my CPAP journey, I’m using the resmed F20 mask, however I see zero on the mask seal score on the app the next morning , I get the green face for mask seal when I start at night however throughout the night the bottom of the mask moves from my chin to my bottom lip ( hope this makes sense)

I had initially been given the nasal mask but as I’m a mouth breather I could not use it,

    any tips

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,632 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I had the F20 for several years with mixed results. Are you sure its the right size for you? Maybe you need a bigger one.

In the end I had to get the memory foam masks because the seal was unreliable on the others. They worked much better but eventually I found they were splitting so now I am on a different nasal/mouth mask, the F40 which is a huge improvement and I am getting good results both for events and seal. Are you on the Drugs Payment Scheme? They will pay for 12 of the memory foam masks a year. You need a new one approx every month.

Who are you with? Resmed will keep trying masks till you find one that suits.

If I may suggest, don't ask about the memory foam mask, not initially anyway, ask for an appointment and get advice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭waxmelts2000

Thank you both, they are sending out a large f20 and see how that goes. If not I’ll head up the office next week and see what else they suggest

It might be worth getting a personal trainer to get you started, they're not cheap but you need them for the motivation, I shed nearly 20kg in 3mts with one, it was all litrealy diet (hard to call it a diet, i've never eaten as much), weight lifting 3 days a week and trying to get 10,000 steps in a day(no running, I hate it). I've fallen off the horse since november but the strenght is still there and i'll try and get back into it the next week once the routine settles in. Probably about the same weight as you starting off and i've a good bit more to go.

Diet is simple as long as your not a vergetrarian, Bacon & Eggs, toast with real butter for brekfast. Chicken kebab for lunch, steak and spuds with more butter for dinner etc. It's simple enough just to keep under how many calaories you need. If you want a pint you might have to swap the steak out to keep under the calories for the day.

Your body will start to change shape after about 7/8 weeks maybe sooner which feels good when it happens.

    Hi everyone,

I need to do something about my sleep this year. My wife is certain I have apnoea (and I don't doubt her). I'm early 40s and heavier than I should be.

Is the GP the first port of call, for a referral? Where is best to be referred to for someone in North Kildare? Hermitage, Peamount or somewhere else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,632 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Firstly go to your GP - they will be able to do a very basic test to see if there is a suggestion of an issue, then refer you to a consultant. A few people on here are with ResMed, I am very happy with them but in fairness I have no experience of any of the others. I think most consultants tend to recommend one of the SA companies, but it doesn't really matter to a lot of them who you go to for equipment.

I live in North Kildare and I went to my GP in Celbridge. Within 24 hours he had referred me to the sleep clinic in Peamount and two weeks later I was doing all the tests. I would highly recommend Peamount as it's not very busy,so easy to get a bed for a couple of nights to do all the tests. I don't have private health insurance so this was the public system. I couldn't believe how quick they were after hearing how slow the Irish health system is.

If I was getting tested again i'd find someone that does a drug induced test, so you know exactly what is the problem. There's a whole heap of things that could be causing it, an ent will be able to observe you when you're knocked out to see where it's going wrong and potentially find a fix other than cpap.

These are 2 channels worth checking out on youtube.

Anywhere in Ireland that will do the drug induced test?

I don't know of any but there surely must be. A blood oxygen/sleep monitor is essential a lot of smart watches have them.

There's little tweaks you can make yourself that can vastly improve things and you'll be able to see the differences on your sleep data every morning. Simple things like sleep position, treating any nasal congestion, cutting out certain foods, having a good sleep environment, weight loss, vitamins, supplements. Breathing and tounge exercises (both doctors I linked to have videos on what to do for tounge exercises). I'd get working on those things while waiting on a test.

Careful of some supplements if your not actively monitoring what's happening at night, I tried Magnesium Glycinate for 8 days straight until Monday and it really destroyed my sleep and it's meat to do the opposite, my REM and Blood oxygen was terrible on it. I kept taking it just to be sure it was that causing it.

Trying a moderate dose of NAC supplement for the next 14 days, 1st night was last night and I'm slightly optimistic but it's way to early to tell but last night was a good night, I hit all the sleep stage time goals, blood oxygen did dip below 90 but no major swings. Anyway bacon and eggs time (choline😉).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,335 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

The NAC supplement is having a profound effect only after 2 nights, REM is gone way up from 6% to 30%, wakefulness is also gone way down to 3%, I was shocked when I woke up and looked at my watch, was expecting to see the usual 3am but it was 8am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,638 ✭✭✭wonga77

Apologies if i missed this earlier but what NAC supplement are you using?

Viridian High Potency NAC 600mg, I also take Optimum Nutrition opti-men Multivitamin (not for the apnea just general well being).

3rd night in, last night was inconclusive as I must have hit off something on my watch and it had me out waking from 2am to 8am. I feel like I got good sleep though, I do remember waking up for a few minutes though. Probably went to bed too early.

It's worth looking up, not sure how it'll play out going to take it for 30 days, trying 2400mg daily to start and get my levels up as from what I've read if you've apnea your reserves are depleted.

The other half if now taking it to try and cure her cough, seems to have well documented benifits for a host of things.
