Fully agree with this on both counts.

Also, Scannell is a strong scrummaging hooker.

Because Munster wanted impact off the bench and gave both ahern and hodnett 30 minutes…and both made a serious impact.

I personally really like the use of the impact type bench approach in rugby. Can't totally change the dynamic of a game.

I think the assistant refs are no more assisting the ref. The name change from touch judge was just that. Like all they do is look across the line. They should be taking pressure off the ref who is looking for loads of things at once. Just police the offside line. I was at the game, and the amount of times sarries were offside was incredible. Fair play to them, of course you are going to keep doing it when not being pinged.

Just on Daly also, his positioning and decision making in defence under pressure was extremely good last night. One example was when sarries had a break in the second half and I think it was haley was struggling to get across, daly was watching the last man but with some really spot on positioning and movement, managed to slow the sarries carrier, allowing haley to make the tackle, while daly also kept his own man under tabs. It was perfectly done and something I'm not sure gets picked up on tv.

Farrell doesn’t seem to care about having dedicated players for specific back row positions. He seems to pick the players he wants and then worries about positions later. So our back up 7s appear to be Doris, POM and Timoney.

It wouldn’t be my favoured approach tbh.

Also worth noting that Kendellen seems to be ahead of him in Ireland standings.

Niall Scan is a level above Rory in fairness. He has a decent number of Ireland caps to his name and deservedly so. Strong scrummager, good worker and I feel more confident about our lineout when he's throwing than I do with Barron. He's a nuts and bolts hooker, but a fine one at that. Still has plenty to offer us

On the last 6 weeks or so Kendellan has played better than him.

He hasn't hit the starting form of the Urc winning year imo

His more impactful off the bench when the game opens up a bit.

Good position to be in at 7

Munster's bench outperformed Sarries'. Itoje took early retirement after his line break early on. Munster's D did enough, but will need to get better as they progress.

    Great win.

I thought a couple of spills aside Daly was excellent too. His kicking was very intelligent too, he always looks to kick to green grass, which is want you want.
The build up to the Hodnett try was a case in point, Saracens kick into our 22, Daly instead of kicking down the line, clears it down the centre where Sarries had no backfield coverage. When Tompkins eventually chases back after the ball and clears, Munster were able to retain possession inside the Sarries 10m line, about a 40m net gain from Daly’s kick. Then Crowley goes cross field and Munster score.

The nucleus of a great team is still there! Great to see Murray back, the guy has just so much experience and almost forgotten about! I thought Crowley played well, his confidence is coming back.

For anyone to scoff at the Munster Coach role and that it's beneath them, shame on you! This team has and always will be a top team in Europe. However our fan base is a country mile ahead of them all!!

Maybe you think this is a dig at O Gara. It's not, it's a dig at all ex players who for some strange reason think Munster is beneath them. What's O Connell doing?? Second fiddle to the Irish mgmt. Surely the man being a Stalwart for Munster can see this job is perfect for him! Let's face it Rog and O Connell owe Munster nothing, we are forever in their debt. But OMG the Munster role is such a perfect fit for either of them!!

I'm only referring to your comment about the fanbase! They have sold out their last 101 home games. Do Munster sell out 2-3 games a year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,005 ✭✭✭budhabob

I wouldn't want POC near the munster job tbh - he has had limited exposure to rugby coaching and his area of remit with Ireland has been creaking. ROG is a whole different story, but he has been honest with his viewpoint and what he wants in his career - I fully respect that.

He played grand but really he's the type of player who should be playing against the dragons on a Sunday afternoon not a crucial Champions Cup game.

I say this with the upmost respect to him but hopefully we'll start producing a higher calibre of player that will phase out his starts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,347 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

You are spot on re POC.

RE Rog I watched both the Munster match and La Rochelle match. Sorry but there's no contest here the Munster match oozed blood from the crowd. Its an Irish thing no French side would compete!!

I remember O Gara giving an interview one time more or less indicating that playing for Munster way surpassed the Irish Jersey. All I'm saying is respect that same Jersey

Just before Hodnett's try, Crowley steps back from play, scans his left wing, Beirne takes the ball to ground, recycles, Murray to Crowley and the rest is brilliant

He was only playing due to others being injured. He wouldn't have been the the 23 if Nankivell was fit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭CONSI

Nankivell has been a loss, feel a bot of our attacking play went through him..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 479 ✭✭sleepyman

I know. It's just a general observation that our second tier of player need to be of a higher quality-easier said than done of course.

Hopefully we're going in the right direction with the Edogbos,Brian Gleeson,Quin,O'Connell etc,-I'm confident their ceiling could be quite high.

I's say have a look over on MFs or the Saints fans site for a ticket. If it's not too much hassle I'd nearly travel and try pick up a ticket over there.

    This is brilliant play.

Crowley is scanning for space on his left wing, sees Scannell, and once he gets the ball from Beirne's recycling it only ever going to Scannell.

Then Hodnett chases the kick, sees that he's ahead of Farrell so checks his run to be onside for a pass from Farrell

Farrell's pass to Hodnett takes out their ten and the ankle tap is the only thing stopping Hodnett from scoring, thankfully he had the composure to hold the ball and roll back on his feet, to score.

    Peach of a try.

Yeah loved it! Kick was perfect and those passes were crisp.

Saracens players scrambling and then skittling into themselves!

Williams tap tackle was a great effort and the Hodnett tumble try finish was terrifically entertaining.

Ahern selection on the bench looks like an inspired decision now!

He was the one who led the chase from Dalys kick in the lead up to that second try.

Took off from the middle of the pitch on his own 10m to charge at Burke in the 22'. Burke sliced his kick to Nash who set up the ruck on the Saracens 10m line.

Just to add it was great to see Munster score a try like that.

Didn't need set-piece. Good kicking. Good chasing. Good ruck speed. Good shape and organisation. Good hands (excl Hayley!) and a great finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,693 ✭✭✭✭phog

Haley had a very poor game by his standards but he never let it get to him, he was always looking for ball, running support lines, counter rucking when needed (I think at one stage he saved us being penalised by his rucking) and made two vital try saving tackles that in the end won us that game.

A reasonable squad update for once.

On the injury front, Conor Murray (elbow), Jack O’Donoghue (shoulder) and Diarmuid Barron (shoulder) all made successful returns against Saracens and came through the game with no issues.

Diarmuid Kilgallen (wrist) also trained fully last week with no issues.

Shane Daly failed a HIA on Saturday evening and will enter the graduated return-to-play protocols.

Peter O’Mahony (calf contusion) will increase his training load and a decision on his availability will be made later in the week.

Mark Donnelly has recovered from the ankle injury he sustained on Emerging Ireland duty and returns to full training this week.

Munster Rugby | Squad Update | Munster Prepare For Northampton Away

Kilgallen (or McCarthy) my come straight into the 15 if Daly doesn't make it through RTP protocols.

Cant wait to get a good look at Kilgallen, really good try scorer for Connacht. Would provide nice competition on the wing with Abrahams.

Daly didn't have his best game for us on Saturday but he'll be a huge loss if not available to us.
