    Folks,

My partner’s great grandfather was born in Roscommon in 1881.

Her grandfather was born in 1912 but we are struggling to find out where he was born.

He was almost certainly born in Roscommon or in Liverpool.

Is there a service (paid is fine) whereby I can provide his name and DOB and they will provide his place of birth ?

    Thanks in advance

If your grandfather was born in Ireland in 1912 then you should be able to find a record of his birth for free on the irishgenealogy.ie website.

If you're having trouble locating it feel free to post details in this thread (or PM one of us if you'd prefer) and we can help try to find it for you.

Sometimes spelling errors and other quirks can make it trickier than it ought to be to find a given civil record.

What makes you think he might have been born in Liverpool? Have you found the great grandfather on the 1911 England or Ireland census returns?

    Thanks for replying Hermy.

I have been on that website but never landed on the page you linked.

I just did a search now and he didn’t return so it’s likely he was born in Liverpool.

The great grandfather (who was born and lived in Roscommon) moved to and from Liverpool for a number of years. I did find him on the Irish census and it tallies with what we’ve been told about him

Her grandfather was raised in Roscommon for many years and then went to live with family in Liverpool. Whilst raised in Roscommon there has been doubt about where he was born. He then had a family in Liverpool and I’m now dating his granddaughter.

If there is an English site as helpful (and easy to use) as the one you linked then that would be handy. Anyone know of one ? I’d love to finally clear up where he was born.

If you haven't already, try searching Irish Genealogy for births of siblings of the grandfather - this might help with the great grandfathers movements between here and the UK.

As regards UK civil records, there are only indexes available online - no free certs like here unfortunately.

You can search the indexes for free at Family Search and they are also available on Ancestry and Find My Past.

However, if you know the mothers maiden name you can also search the UK GRO website.

You have to create an account but it's free to search.

And if you need to order a cert that's the place to go as anywhere else will charge more.

Freebmd.org.uk also has English and Welsh indexes. Mother's maiden name after 1911.

One thing to check is the 1921 census (either on Findmypast or Ancestry, both require a subscription) for the grandfather. It will give a birth location that is more detailed than previous censuses.

Findmypast also has Catholic parish records for Liverpool.
