    What do we think?

the front looks better anyway. Not that that would be difficult. It really is an ugly car in current guise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,434 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Yeah it doesn't look as bad as last model front. It's very aerodynamic but looks out of proportion, rises too high in the middle and falls away to the back at too sharp an angle, or at least gives that impression.

Like a computer mouse I've heard it described as.

I've no doubt it will be an excellent EV though. Just could never warm to the looks.

Looks well in white. I love the looks of the front. Looks like there's a front bumper camera but the position appears quite low compared to most cars. I'll buy the stalks from S3XY buttons.

Looks like they retained the stalks, the left indicator stalk at least! A very sensible decision.

Ironically, for all the focus on keeping the indicator stalk - if they could keep one stalk only I'd have preferred the gear stalk TBH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭DrPsychia

Same, I got used to the indicator stalk on the M3 even though it's still a terrible engineering design to omit it. Swipe to change direction was not good for making swift maneuvers, nor was it reliable in my experience.

Any rumours of European pricing ?

When the refresh 3 came ouot the prices dropped slightly vs the outgoing model.

Just order a Y now, when the facelift arrives, you'll be updated to a facelift car. You can then decide if you want to proceed. IF they increase prices, you retain the order price and it if decreases, you get the newer lower price.

Some photos are stalkless, I'd be surprised if they were retained given other models have them gone

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,829 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

and I think it's a shame the LFP battery did not get a capacity increase, unlike the 3 there is room through redesign, would have loved say a 70/75 LFP range

The indicator stalk is definitely back for the Chinese and AUS market from what I can see online.

Tesla confirmed it was responding to ‘customer feedback’ so obviously knew sales would tank if they went completely stalkless.

Though I must say it looks a bit lopsided with just 1 stalk, they should have reinstated the gear shifter too.

how often do you change gears when driving? the issue customers are complaining is about indicate when going through roundabouts, which is not a problem for Americans as they dont really have roundabouts

While the exterior looks a bit better than the existing Model Y, I'm fairly disappointed by the refresh.

There were rumours it would get 800v, bigger 90+ kw battery option, better newer CATL LFP batteries (the have some great new ones that charge mega fast) etc but it very much seems to be all the same internals as the existing.

There seems to be about a 3% range bump which suggests just slightly better aero and actually, based on the spec of the China/Australia ones they seem to have dropped the LR RWD model (seemed to be the pick of the bunch for range/value) so now this outgoing variant has better range then the new one!

Anyway I was hoping for much more of an upgrade, I actually sold my 2023 AWD Model Y a few months ago as I reckoned if the new Model Y was a big leap forward it would damage the resale of the older models. I was planning to get a 7 seater new Y if it looked a big improvement but I think I'll leave it for the moment as I'm unimpressed with what they've done.

You do realise the Tesla market outside America is larger?

The stalkless indicators would obviously reduce their market share so a prudent decision overall.

Although orders for the Irish Market are likely to take some time, for anyone contemplating buying a Model Y, now may not be the right time. In markets that are open for orders of new model, sales of the older model have been heavily discounted (makes sense) e.g. Australia prices dropped by 4k dollars.

    seen this on another group.

Here is everything New on the Upgraded Model Y:

Caveat this is based on the Australian spec so far, things may change or be different in the UK (when it eventually comes).

    1. New Design to Maximise Efficiency (70 parts down to 1) and reducing the drag coefficient from 0.23Cd to 0.22Cd (meaning less wind noise and more range)
    2. Indicator Stalk Remains!
    3. Stalkless gear selector (using the frankly superb auto gear selector)
    4. 11 more miles of range (from same battery size)
    5. 0.5s faster (possibly acceleration boost just included here so take with pinch of salt)
    6. AI4 assisted driving hardware (latest AP hardware)
    7. Glacier Blue New Colour Option (could be just China Factory Specific)
    8. Upgraded sound system (now 16 speakers vs 14)
    9. Tighter Fit and Finish
    10. Updated suspension
    11. Very slightly longer (thickness of an adult thumb)
    12. Slightly faster to charge (this could be just because of the efficiency of the more range from the new design so take with big pinch of salt)
    13. New wheels and tyres
    14. World's First indirect reflective body panel taillight
    15. Acoustic glass (assumed all round like M3)
    16. Rear Touchscreen.
    17. New Improved Front Screen (15.4" vs 15" smaller border)
    18. Ventilated seats
    19. Power recline / fold seats in the rear so they fold back up on their own
    20. Rear seat elongated by 15 mm
    21. Headrests widened by 17 mm
    22. Enhanced connectivity and signal range
    23. Hands-free trunk/boot
    24. 100 litre extra boot capacity
    25. Blind Spot lights in the door side mirrors themselves
    26. Various material changes (similar to Model 3)
    27. Customisable Interior Light Bar
    28. Front Bumper Camera
    29. 6 mm less ground clearance

People said the same about the M3 Facelift, i think people misinterpreted facelifts. They are not new cars. Minor refreshes as we see on ever other car, i4, ID4, EV6, every LCI BMW that went before. Its just progression changes that are to be expected IMO.

But look at the bright side, you sold your car, cash sitting so your in a great position to buy this or indeed any other car now that you know what's out there. No messing with selling or trading in etc

A larger battery and 800V architecture would make the car more expensive, or Tesla would need to reduce their profit margins, which wouldn’t sit well with investors and speculators. Tesla can’t afford to raise prices significantly due to strong competition from the likes of BYD outside of North America.

BYD is leading in innovation because they are vertically integrated - manufacturing batteries and designing most components in-house, except maybe CPUs. Tesla announced their 4680 battery back in 2020 but has yet to deliver it for mass-production cars. Meanwhile, BYD continues to deliver new battery innovations. Tesla may need to redesign their chassis to accommodate a much larger LFP battery from CATL.

I’m uncertain about what I’ll buy next. I don’t like the direction Tesla is heading under Musk’s leadership.

As much as I love my Model Y LR and EVs in general, I sometimes get intrusive thoughts about switching to a RAV4 hybrid for my next new car 🙈 The residual values on current gen RAV4 models are excellent, while the depreciation curve for EVs is much steeper.

Pray tell, what is this direction?

Thanks, I think I just assumed that the rumors that were hinted at (about 800v, better batteries etc) were based in reality. It basically is just the same as the M3 refresh (which is not that surprising) with different styling.

You're right that most mid cycle refreshes are not that different, I just figured they might go for somthing bigger with the Y.

It was already behind the likes of the Kia/Hyundai of a few years ago in terms of charge speed etc.

I think they potentially could have got around that while still using 400v if they fitted some of the newer CATL LFP batteries. The Shenxing LFP can charge at speeds of 500+kw and can still charge at 250+kw at 80%. So in theory if they plonked that in the Model Y you could charge at 250kw (it's max current speed) all the way to 80% and so a 10-80% time of about 12 mins with existing tech. That would be a huge upgrade on current charge speeds.

Maybe they'll still do that (I don't think they have large scale availability of these batteries yet) but it would have been an impressive upgrade to have at launch.

I replaced the Model Y with a 3 year old ID4. It's clearly a fair bit crapper than the Model Y but it was a little over 20k for a 3 year old fanciest spec one (it was €57k new, ouch!) so I'm happy enough with it at 1/2 the price I sold my Tesla for. Will stick to buying 2nd hand EVs that have depreciated a fair bit from now on, less painful:)

Not much there that would tempt me to change, definitely just a facelift. Lol at the stalks though, at least they admitted they got that wrong. I wonder will they make a reappearance on the 3 now.

The new Seal is getting 800v Architecture so I can understand why people expect it. The only thing I’d ask is when it would have been of benefit?

I don’t do much if any public charging so I’m not aware of all the 800v chargers around that can be taken advantage of.

I drove to Galway the other day. Used the MY as there’s some free supercharging on it. Pulled into Athenry at 23% and charged at 210kW. It tapered down but I was up to 81% in about 15 mins. First time using SuC’s in that car so was happy enough. Weather played havoc with efficiency though. It used about 60% of the battery to get to Dublin. 190km at about 22 kWh/100km. Done a trip to Letterkenny last month at 15.8kwh/100km! Some difference!.

I have an unusual use case in that I tend to do about 5,000km around Europe in the summer including getting to/from the South of France (2000km) as quick as possible. So if you're doing 1000km in a day, the quicker charging definitely helps. But agreed for most people, or for driving around Ireland it's pretty irrelevant.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,195 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Deffo worth considering then of course. Personal circumstances will over rule my advice for sure. With the euro trio though, the Tesla network comes into its own.

No messing with apps, no planning. Just I put on screen and it will plan the stops and use them for the minimal amount of time possible as you already know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭blobert

Funnily enough I probably only used Tesla chargers about 1/2 the time, a lot of the ones going through France tended to be in slightly off the beaten path in hotel car parks etc. I prefer ones just off the motorway in service stations, very quick to get on/off and France is great for loads of fast chargers.

If the rumors of a slightly large 6/7 seat version of Model Y coming I'd definitely be interested in that but it might be as real as the the other rumours that turned out to be untrue:)

I drive Letterkenny to Tallaght, Tallaght to Letterkenny every 6 weeks or so, have never seen efficiency any where near that - Model y performance. Think the best I got was 18.2 last year when temp was mid 20's.

Done it 26th November. 246km. Used 53% and averaged 15.8kwh/100km.

Model Y LR with AB. And only the 20” wheels. The 21” wheels make a difference and it’s noticeable. I had the 21” on 2 previous Model S P’s too.

Longest trip I’ve done in an EV in a while.
