Advice on buying a 2014-ish estate. Octavia vRS?

    Hi all,

    Skip to third paragraph if you don't care for context.

    I'm looking to do some research on my 2nd car so I know what I want in a few months. I've been driving my first car for the past 2 years - a 1.4L petrol 2010 Astra J hatch with a bunch of defects which I got for 1.5k euro. I feel like it's done it's job in letting me add a few more scratches without worrying about it. With the amount of kms I've done (about 35-40k), I feel comfortable enough to get a car I'll actually properly like.

    I've always wanted to get an estate for all the typical reasons, they're also just cool and insurance tends to be more reasonable since lads my age typically go for other cars. I've a budget of 8-10k. I'd like something not so slow as well, no need for an RS6 but I was thinking about the skoda vRS estates (2013-2020) and I love the idea of it. I'm not sure if I can get a decent one for my budget and not really even sure if I need that much power. I'm also concerned about reliability and the costs of possibly replacing a DSG or DPF filters etc. I'd like to know what spec of skoda would be best for me or if I should be looking at a Megane or something like that instead.

    My questions are: Best engine for a Skoda Octavia estate ~2014? What's the reliability like for them? Is there a better alternative?

    I commute for an hour each way, macroom area to cork, typically 60km trips, not much city driving. I understand diesel is better for fuel economy but aren't they more expensive to repair and maintain?

    2.0 TDI would be best. You can get a VRS within your budget but they are all high mileage. All over 250k km’s. Not much of an issue if they’ve had some major work carried out recently and you have a contingency fund for potential repairs each year. I don’t see many estate versions tho.

    DSG repairs for that era are generally €800 to €1800 in my experience. There have been reports on here of it costing more but I’ve never personally seen it. Get the gearbox serviced immediately after buying and you should be grand. DPF replacement costs thousands but you’d be a fool to do that. Most people just get them cleaned/removed.

    look out for them burning a significant amount of oil, of course you won’t be told that when looking at one.

    Diesels have a service interval for the timing belt of 210,000km, however the water pump doesn't last that long. My garage recommends as early as 120,000km to have timing belt + water pump renewed. So check if that's done before buying a car or budget it in.

    It might last a lot longer than 120k, we've had two Octavias and the first one we brought to the garage with the coolant pissing out at around 190k, the second one I think we did at around 180k before that would happen.

    the 184PS 2.0 diesel can suffer from oil burning issues. The 150 doesn’t have that issue but isn’t available on the RS.
    Some of them are going through a serious amount of oil, and it isn’t something you’d easily spot when looking at a car.

    Common issues are blockage of the heater matrix with either casting debris or silica from the expansion bottle, which can be quite laborious to put right.
    The water pumps have a fuel saving shutter mechanism which can jam up and cause the car to overheat quite rapidly, other than that though they’re quite solid and I would say a lot more reliable than the average diesel of that era.

    Things like injectors, DFPs etc aren’t really a common issue on them.

    I had a 2016 estate one. Serviced on time and looked after well. At about 160,000km it started to burn oil so bad that it wouldnt do 7000km without the warning light coming on. Other than that no issues.
