    I couldnt find a thread ?!??

Anyway - i, and most people i have spoken to , have found Winterval very poor this year.

Its in decline, and really needs new ideas , fresh places to see/go.

The same stuff every year will soon lose its appeal.
The light show used to be the highlight, now its just a mish mash of random images and music - Is it meant for the kids ?? Or the parents??

The few stalls are just mostly selling tat (the lad with the "del boy" accent and attitude selling perfume/after shave??) …. Have they priced decent stalls out of the running to rent the spots?

The movie showing in the Reg , The horse and Carriage, the "real" santa in the Bishops Palace , Cathedral Sq was magic, the train around the town (not the toy train they have now !!??!)

All gone now, and for the overall experience , they are missed badly….
I know they added the Big Top music gigs (not sure how they went?)

All the hype about "European city of Xmas" … but it felt a bit flat …….

It needs rethinking and a few fresh ideas to reinvigorate it? Or is it ok ?

I must be living in a different place. I was out with kids at a couple of weekends and the atmosphere was magic and teh crowds were huge which must be testament to something. The small train is necessary to weave its way through arrow streets and our lot enjoyed it. The horse and carriage was problematic with the kind of traffic volumes around the city centre.

I am sure things can always be improved, but your comments read a little grinch like. Are you sure you are just not knocking it from afar as per usual in this country?

Yeah it felt a little disappointing considering winning the award last year (which i guess had its financial rewards)

Still a great thing for the city

I for one thought it was great this year as did the kids. Any evening or weekend that I was in town it was packed. The big top was a nice edition for the adults.

The Santa we saw in Medieval Museum was fantastic.

There was a time when everyone was complaining about the train causing traffic issues, when they horses were present there were calls for animal safety and further traffic concerns.

It might have been just me but I thought it was one of the best wintervals this year.

The capacity of Irish people to be disappointed is quite amazing.

Nothing wrong with at all this year, great atmosphere around town in the lead up to Christmas.

I was expecting more investment into the Christmas lighting to be honest. It’s the same every year. Some of the lights were put back along the quay and then went out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,416 ✭✭✭914

I agree but that is purely down to the council and not winterval. O connell St looked really well. The Quays could be far better, lights needed for between dunnes and Clair's and lighting needed in JRS.

Another great addition this year was the parade and Pyrotechnics display at bishops palace.

The maintenance of both Christmas lighting and street lighting is fairly shocking

Absolutely agree about the Christams ligts. Not enough and not maintained. I dont think I ever saw as many people around though on some of the weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 710 ✭✭✭Valhalla90

The lack of maintenance is a huge issue for the lights I just can’t understand it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭azimuth17

Contractor probably not Waterford based, no one local to service the stuff. Lowest cost tender given to someone with a van and a ladder. Come back on the weekend after the fault is reported. Same with public lighting. We have a lamp outside front door not working. Reported in June 2023.

Going slightly off topic but the city centre is in need of an overhaul on lighting, the Quay especially. New LED lighting is badly needed but not just swapping out the current lighting for LEDs. A completely new lighting system needs to be installed.

Lady lane, Arundel square, Michael street since the new LEDs were installed look great and are nice and bright at night time.

Council have an unfortunate habit of installed up lights that look great, but then they burn out and are never replaced

    No..
    Not 'grinch like'…

I was in there numerous times , and i was with at least 12 different people , and they were all disappointed with it.

But its ok, 🙈 🙉 🙊 is what stops things being improved/better …

Every year (at least they used to) Winterval put out a questionnaire for the public to fill in about what they enjoyed didn't enjoy, improvements and ideas etc, it would be worth filling that out if you felt it was disappointing. If they don't currently do this it would be worth dropping them an email with your ideas/suggestions.

Interestingly you say it needs fresh ideas, as it's stale but at the same time you seem to suggest it needs a return of old ideas such as the horses, train and movies at the reg?

As for the "real" Santa, I presume you mean Gino. I have to say the Santa we saw at Winterval this year was amazing, from his coat, real beard and how he was with the kids and the magical setting under the medieval museum.

At the end of the day Christmas is for the kids and once the kids enjoy Winterval then that is a fairly large box ticked.

Secondly it brings in large crowds to town and that seemed to also be the case this year, I felt it was one of the busiest years in town compared to other years. That would be another large box ticked.

Sometimes as adults if is very difficult to see things through a child's eyes but what might seem stale to you could be magical for a child.

Yes I was disappointed that someone like yourself from outside this area, could hardly wait until the paint dried before rushing in and posting extensively about decline. Did you find nothing you liked? I have already said that the lighting needs attention, but you may not have read that. The format is simple and hard to change precisely because it is Christmas. It definitely worked this year as I never saw so many people around.

Everything needs to be refreshed from time to time, but the "Del Boy" you mention selling perfume, was seen by you as such only because you understood his accent. What about the guy from Peru selling knitwear, or the Polish man selling ice cream ? They could be Del Boys in their home country too, or does your scepticism only apply to people from the UK?

I'm glad you took the time to come to Winterval yourself.

LED lighting is slowly starting to be installed around the city. Tramore is almost complete. The issue with the Quay is there is need for lighting down the central median as the road is wide and the lights don’t cover the width of the road. Maintenance is also a huge issue. One streetlight outside the old ulster bank is missing the actual light head with over a year now.

Completey agree. Lighting across the city is deplorable. Lights our everywhere. The small company that has the maintenance contract seems unable to carry out the work. Two outside our house out of action since mid 2023 and have been reported continuously.

Cheapest tender or yet another example of council management not living in the city and being utterly unaware of what's going on? ?

Ahh stop being so defensive … 😏
Maybe go visit other winter festivals and see whats happening outside "your area" … (???)

Maybe journey outside the Deise (and the waterford threads) and you might broaden your horizon and ideas…

Thanks for the advice . I have visited Christmas markets all over the place. I think Winterval did a good job and attracted the biggest crowds I have seen at it. You are determined to find fault with it. Forgive me if I thought from a previous thread that you said you were not from Waterford.

Anyway, happy New Year. See you at WInterval 2025.

    From Waterford City Council

"Waterford has just celebrated its first year under the title of the European City of Christmas and the 12th year of the Winterval Waterford Festival, and new record-breaking data released from the digital counters across Waterford City show that on the Winterval Festival dates just over 1.8 million (after removing the local population base) unique visitors joined Waterford’s festive celebrations."

1.8 million unique visitors, I'd say that has been pretty successful.

It broke all previous records and broke any goals that were set for 2024 👏

Anyone who was at it must have seen the crowds, except….see above!

I agree about the stalls… Mucho tat on offer… Visited a few yrs ago and there was much more artisan stuff in the stalls… A lot for the kids but not much for the oldies… they would want to up their game as nearly every city n town in the country is onboard the market lark @ this point… Sure there was lots of people walking about but all were probably thinkin "WTF? Is that it?" If the organisers dont refresh it than it will become just like the amusement park out the road in Tramore. Same thing happened to Spraoi - amazing in the 90s than lost its elan as time passed. Now every town has a "festival".

It must be a terrific gift to be able to interpret the mind/opinion of thousands of people. Do let us know how you manage it please. While everything can be improved, re-invented, Winterval is for kids and Christmas.

Id like to see how they would all rate it …

Just because people come, doesnt mean that they found it as wonderful as some…..

    (that never see anything bad)

You really are so blinkered by your town.

Its great to stand up for your own and all that , but its another thing being able to take some criticism…..

    As a neutral , i would agree.

Winterval is turning stale, and as you said, same way that Spraoi has….

But shur what would we know… Giving our opinions like !!!

Thats not allowed, unless its a rosy one….

It has had so many positive writes up in national papers/media, EU papers/media, social media etc, it has been awarded the Christmas capital, it must be doing something right?

That's not to say it shouldn't be open to criticism, or that it could be further enhanced.

But to completely disregard it after it attracted 1.8 million visitors is banana's.

Also dragging Spraoi into it, considering it competes with ATN on the same weekend and still attracts very large crowds again it must be doing something right.

Again I said this earlier, winterval and Spraoi is aimed at kids and families, I think both cover that criteria extremely well.

There speaks a poster from County Kilkenny who describes our city as "your town". Says it all really.

First in after the finishing line with criticism.

If the Mona Lisa was in Waterford Treasures Museum you would be telling everyone "its very small"!

Or you were younger in the 90s, and became more of a bore as you got older and find little joy in anything?

So little joy you join boards and your first post is negative!
