-3 in North longford. Fog patches here and there as I drove to Arva and back. Clear here at home and a nice bright but feeling cold morning.

I know, no one can say for sure, but does anyone think there will be enough of a thaw around Mallow for schools to open tomorrow? They were closed all week as expected but I have an important medical appointment tomorrow and trying to work out childcare/school runs, thanks.

More light snow here on top of the frozen crunch nearly went over in it this morning - ground is still an ice rink underneath

Just made a shower of snow here in Killarney, which was surprising to me. Thought we were done with the snow. Ground nice and white again!

Hard frost in Galway this morning. The sun will be out much earlier today so should be nice scenery.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

An ice day. I presume the fog kept temp relatively steady.

    Fog has finally lifted

Seems you can't get a break. Be careful out there.

Got down to -5.4C at my place out by the coast near Tralee, showers overnight gave a coating of black ice, tricky enough even to get to the car, just around-1.0C leaving this morning under cloud, car showing -2.5C around Tralee , the place with a light coating of snow/ graupel. Very quiet roads , slippy in places especially back roads and hills.

It has brightened up to blue sunny skies now, beautiful morning.

Did it really get that cold in West Limerick last night? Amazingly none of my pipes froze outside. The pipes freeze here at least once a year so I was expecting the worst last night.

Bring on the thaw! Sick of this snow.

I've been to Canada 6 times and many of those times were in Winter. They cope and they cope really well. But not in rural Ireland.

Pat Kenny Newstalk and Peadar Tóibín TD discussing the overhyped weather warnings, for what is essentially expected winter weather - the financial cost of closed businesses/schools etc

Pat: "When I was kid going to school.. hands were purple and chilblains and schools were open .. "

And having to shake ourselves at 8:50 in the classroom to get the blood back into our fingers. Remember it well.

    Great day for the dry'in.

Ah the old days. We had to walk a mile and a half, carry our bags, and when we got in, bring in turf our parents had stacked outside and light the fires for the teachers. For us that was after some chores at home on the farm as well

It wasn't considered a hardship, we just got on with it. We loved sliding on the never treated roads, the snowball fights if there was snow. We were freezing but never cared as that was it, get on with it.

The thaw looks like it will be a slow affair through the weekend.

We had a small bit of snow overnight here in east Sligo which then froze so it looks like snow but it's hard as feck.

Bitterly cold morning near the Kilkenny-Laois border at 90m ASL. Overnight fog has cleared leaving all the trees coated in frost. Low of around -6c but rising now in sunshine to a current -3c

But also, one parent working in the home, roads safe to walk because of a lower population and less car dependency, less car dependency in getting to the school etc. Lots of context around the "old days" missing from such bs.

fwiw I remember an extended Christmas trip home in North Longford when we couldn't get back to Dublin for the ferry, and the local national school was definitely shut because of snow and ice (late 80's I'd guess), as I spent that time playing in the snow with my pals.
