you could read some of the considered, well thought out posts talking about the school situation and reflect on them or you can rephrase them in your own words that bear no resemblance to the considered points made…..

Very few people saying anything like what you said, many however pointing out the inherent flaws in the situation we find ourselves in re warnings as they relate to large, generally urban, areas like Dublin, Cork and Galway where most (not all) schools are easily accessible with just some common sense care. Those same people, almost to a man / woman, make those points while acknowledging that there is a swathe of mid/north Munster and south Leinster/ Connaught where this is a very serious event, easily meeting the orange criteria and where schools are quite rightly closed. I myself have travelled Cork - Limerick twice already this week so have seen the snow depths first hand.

Looks like some cloud cover drifting east across central parts might take the edge of the temperatures a touch for some in the 2nd half of the night?

Dropping quickly tonight -3.1C now here near Tralee out by the coast. Good chance of getting down around -8C well inland overnight. A few wintry showers in the NW, W and SW perhaps.

Already colder than at any stage last night here near the Kilkenny-Laois border, indeed since the snow arrived. Clear sky - but bit of haze which suggests fog may form later.

Temperature rose during the streamer earlier and melted everything. Now it's gone sub zero and the roads and paths are totally glassy. Going to be lots of falls on the way to school and work tomorrow around here. Worst I've ever seen it here.

Ripley's believe it or don't, where I live we have had 25 to 55 cm snow cover continuously since late Nov, and the lowest temperature locally as been -8 C, due to nearly continual cloud cover. It probably hasn't been above 4 C at any point. If it stays cloudy for days here, as it often does, temperature settles in at -2 to -5 C. (elevation 1050 m, so at around 900 mb level).

We don't lose this snow cover entirely until early April in an average season. march 2nd has been max snow cover date both of the past two winters, 65 cm two winters ago, 45 last winter. Ski resort nearby says they have nearly 2 meters base, that must be near top of ski hills because it looks to be 70 cm or so near their lodge and parking areas (at 1300 m and 3 km n.w. of my location). Near perfect snow conditions in alpine this year, skiers are happy.

Remarkable to say parts of Kerry and west Limerick have almost(?) same snow cover as me (at 55 cm now), obtained in two days compared to two months in snow country.

Will it be Friday or Monday before schools return in the worst affected regions? I know temperatures start rising from tomorrow, but not that much above freezing. Will the roads be safe to drive by Friday am?
