Former Justice and Defence minister Alan Shatter has called for Ireland’s opposition to the alleged war crimes and ongoing genocide of Israel to be punished by the incoming Trump administration.

I don’t remember a prominent Irish politician and former minister, possibly with the exception of Conor Cruise O’ Brien, so overtly putting the interests of another country before Ireland’s in such a way.

Given his role as a former minister for both defence and justice, departments overseeing Ireland’s intelligence and security infrastructure. Can we be sure that Shatter, as minister has always put Ireland’s interests first, especially if those interests were in conflict with the interests of the state of Israel?

Honestly I think Alan is unhinged.

He refused to provide a breath test to a Garda when he was caught drunk driving while he was Minister for Justice. I lost all respect for him then.

Alan Shatter is a traitor to Ireland …. anyone who can be okay with Netanyahu's satanism is 100% evil ….. Shatter knows where he can go if he does not like what Ireland's government are doing ….. he belongs in Netanyahuland and should stay there …. A total disgrace and I'm also sure it is petty and personal too ….. just because Fine Gael didn't pick him as a candidate over the last 10 years or so …. defo a man on the wrong side of history ….

America too should wake the …. up and realise they are being played for fools by Netanyahu … I doubt that will happen anytime soon no matter who ends up the president later this year/early in 2026 or even if they held new elections and Kamala Harris won …. I believe Trump will be president for a very short time until he oversteps the mark (as a convicted felon he is walking on thin ice and is only there until someone else wants him gone and that will lead to him being replaced due to the law which so far has been 100% ignored) ….. before Vance or whoever replaces him within 9-12 months ….

Remember when Alan was justice minister and said members of the gardai were not cancelling penalty points and fines, when the dog on street knew it was going on in every corner of the country. He's a tool. Probably not taking his hammering in the election too well

He's part of the brainwashed cult at this stage, can see no wrong in what Israel is doing, despite most of the world calling it out for what it is, genocide and ethnic cleansing.

I think Shatter is just out to get back the FG party because he forced to resign by Enda Kenny. It just shows how bitter and vindictive Shatter is and hasn't gotten over being forced to resign.

Mod: Threads merged - I just closed two other threads on the Israel conflict yesterday, all discussion now goes in this thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,147 ✭✭✭SafeSurfer

The thread I started was about the potential conflict of interest of a former minister in charge of Irish state security, showing more loyalty to another state, not about the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

    Former being the keyword

Which sentence(s) exactly in article you linked are “showing more loyalty to another state”?

He can of course give his opinion on the Israeli conflict but really at this stage does his opinion hold any weight? He is a private citizen so I see no issue in defending Israel's action. It is disappointing to see him go so far and advocate for Trump to punish ireland and to claim that Irish actions are detrimental to US interests is just wrong. But I expect no less from someone writing for the Times of Israel.

Shatter put himself and his unequivocally pro Israeli position before the electorate in November. As did other candidates. He was roundly rejected, losing his deposit.
He is calling on the new US administration to punish Ireland for its stance on Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity for which an arrest warrant is in place against the Israeli prime minister.
He has no mandate to do so.

He throws the tired “blood libel” accusation at our Taoiseach, saying he claims Israel is deliberately killing children. Did Harris say this?
Im old enough to remember when accusing Israel of attacking hospitals was a “blood libel”.
He also criticises the Irish president. He has never criticised the Israeli president or other Israeli politicians for openly lying.

Half of the threads on this site critique the government one way or another (rightly and/or wrongly)

Must be an awful load of people here disloyal to the state

Shatter might persuade Trump to make us the 53rd state after Canada and Greenland. A lot of posters would be all for that. On another note I have said before that it was the US that was responsible for doctoring the pagers imo on behalf of Israel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,030 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

In the weeks after Oct 7th 2023, I argued here that Israel was enacting a genocide. I was told by many posters that that wasn't the case and they had no option but to do what they were doing, or what did I suggest?

I suggested they target Hamas leadership directly and look to the EU, UN, US and others to target their funders.

Boy did the pager attack show just what they could do if they choose to. This is a genocide carried out by Israel using the excuse of Oct 7th (which they knew in advance of) to justify it. All with the backing of both parties in the US, present and past UK governments and the EU.

All these institutions are stained because of it and Israel has shown just how evil it's leadership currently is. And many of its citizens and supporters to boot.

I think you will find a difference between the divided loyalties of posters on Boards.ie criticising government policy and a politician who was responsible for Irish security and intelligence siding with a foreign power.

    was

Him giving his opinion which btw does validly touch on some points about anti semitism, which is clearly present in the European Left

Notice how the left is very very quiet about Islamics genociding 3-4x the amount of people in same timeframe in Sudan, you wouldn’t even find a thread here until I made one

Why that? Are some people more worthy of than others?

How much money, weapons and diplomatic support do western powers give to Sudan?
Can you compare it with Israel for us?

Alan Shatter drifted into criticising our tax rate, he is promoting the idea of hurting us financially because of a disagreement with our policy on israels actions in Gaza. He is merely playing up to the domestic audience in israel. I notice he is not referring to other genocides too in Sudan and elsewhere so perhaps he is part of the left now. It's a pity we have to still pay this man's pension.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭j62

Russia and Wagner group directly funded and fought for the RSF Islamic/arab “nationalists” who killed 4x the amount of people since 2023 than died in Gaza

Once again you won’t hear much about it because can’t tie it to some insane Zionist global conspiracies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,147 ✭✭✭SafeSurfer

Israel has been up to its neck in Sudan for the past decade. Just liked they sold weapons to Rwanda during its genocide. We don’t hear about this.

Is there anything is this world that can't be blamed on Israel? Literally any worldwide incident, within a few posts on here, Israel is brought up. The most recent being the new orleans attack. Many irish people have become hysterical in their anti Israel hate which only serves to undermine the argument that it's about Gaza.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,787 ✭✭✭dmcdona

Well, it is a thread about Israel…

Another couple of key issues for the focus on Israel is that they claim to be "a western democracy" and the fact that the Holocaust was perpetrated against Jews.

I don't know much about Sudan or Russia or Myanmar but I don't believe any of them claim to be a beacon of "democracy".

As for people being hysterical and "hate of Israel", that's just hyperbole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,787 ✭✭✭dmcdona

Perhaps start a new thread on genocide in general if you genuinely want the answer to that question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭j62

I did start a thread, which has illustrated (as well as no one marching anywhere for other genocides or victims of Islamic terrorism) quite clearly that the Left doesn’t actually give a **** about genocide of innocent people

There is some combination of anti semitism and/or pro islamism and/or plain indifference that is evident

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,787 ✭✭✭dmcdona

Do you seriously believe that expressing concerns over the actions of Israel for the last 15 months is anti semitic?

Presumably the thread you started answered your question. Assuming everyone who posted were clear if they were "left" or "right"?

expressing concerns about what happened in Gaza while ignoring a 4x larger genocide in same timeframe carried out by Islamists is something alright
