Have you been living a different reality to the rest of us?

I'm in my mid-40s and can hardly recall an event where Anerica was asked to get invoked in resolving a conflict, and did.

And yet they've been involved in countless conflicts worldwide in the same time span. Funny that.

There is no one else capable of defending the west like the US does. Unfortunately part of that protection involves dirty work to advance interests to maintain that protection. That's just the way of the world. Who else is going to do it?

As for Cuba you must be having a laugh? Communism is not a mere "policy difference". Cuba allowed the Soviet Union to station nuclear missiles on it's territory. From that moment without regime change they were always going to be persona non grata as a state.

Sadly Cuba remains sanctioned to this day and that won't change until the state changes fundamentally.

I don't know if Trump is serious or not. I doubt it. It seems more of hardball opening positions for negotiation.

If the US no longer wants the job of World Police, they could change things in an instance by calling for the restructure of the UN so it and other countries no longer have the ability to make it 90% ineffective.

    But they don't want that.

They want to both be seen as the big dog in the yard, and to pull the strings of that institution also.

Or he’s a senile old man, if he ever tells Saudi Arabia, and the evangelicals waiting for their dungeons and dragons fantasy to play out in Israel to go f*** themselves, I’ll be impressed.

We live in a world where the USA is the hegemon. MAGA wailing about the cost of maintaining the requisite military presence for said hegemony is like McDonald's complaining about the cost of paper straws.

They can step back any time they want. There's a reason that they haven't.

The US is not defending the West because of some innate love of the UK, Germany etc, it is defending itself and ensuring that the west continues on as the main power in the world with the US the head of that power.. To ensure that the likes of China and Russia are kept at the furthest distance they use other countries as their bases. It makes it much easier to fly sorties into Iraq, and Iran keeps tabs on China etc by having a presence in Israel, South Korea, Germany etc. They aren't doing it to protect them, it is to protect themselves.

Cuba is a perfect case in point. Russia got far too close so they unilaterally made Cuba an illegal country, and have used their financial might and control to try to get other countries to follow suit. There are no missiles in Cuba so why the need to continue on with the blockade?

The sanctions will only change when Cuba does what the US wants them to.

Doesn't matter if Trump is serious or not. It is completely unacceptable and every right-thinking person should be aghast that the POTUS, which claims to love democracy and freedom, is openly threatening peaceful and non-threatening sovereign states.

Speaking of Military and US Hegemony:

The nonsense of Greenland needing to be in the US due to "security" seems to ignore what NATO is, and who is in it.

    nato arctic.jpg

Attacking Greenland is attacking all of NATO. So along with Canada and Norway, this frontier is watched with the co-operation of the US, who in turn have their own official chunk of this frontline via Alaska.

There is no need to make Greenland a US possesion beyond satisfying the ego of a petulant child. By virtue of NATO membership and Denmark's own military who operate in Greenland, the Russians could not hope to dare touch it.

So between all this talk of invading allies sovereign land and forcing social media companies to be nothing more than propaganda outlets for misinformation and disinformation has anyone changed their minds who scoffed when I some time back, in another thread, compared Trump and MAGA to Nazi Germany? It is literally the same playbook being played out before our eyes.

The issue is his supporters and apologists are either in 2 camps. They stand to gain (Musk etc) or they are complete and utter morons (everyone else).

I was hesitant to describe Trump as a fascist and compare him to Hitler initially but his attempted coup in 2021 and his blood purity rhetoric since then have changed my mind.

There remain flaws with comparisons to 1933 Germany though. For one, there is no defined external enemy and that's a serious omission. Hitler had the Entente powers to fulminate against. Trump thinks injecting bleach is a viable treatment option. A lot of Trumpism is just creating unnecessary problems while stripping the state and rinsing the tubes.

I'm not saying that there are no problems but we've the EU now. Any tariffs Trump implements can be easily countered. We'll suffer but so will US farmers and other pro-Trump demographics. They'll still devour themselves but they knew what they were voting for.

I had considered whom else, besides the nations whose territory Trump is so concerned about, he might have been addressing; as in China and Russia (or their satellite-proxies). Is that part of your consideration when writing about Trump's spoken words AND maybe the coincidental visit-message to Greenland of his son?

Could be 12 more years of Trumps.

I would be 100% confident Junior will run next.

Cuba is a good example of hypocrisy from a couple different points of view. Obviously the attitude towards Cuba is more designed for people who fled it, but still they brown nose the Saudis. Then there are the perpetual student types who simultaneously think it’s some kind of paradise but held back at the same time by US sanctions (then again why does such a wonderful ideology need the capitalist pigs in order to prosper).

Just watched the part of Trumps press conference where he talked about Canada and he said if you remove this "imaginary drawn line" (I.e. the Border) the could be a giant great country.

He actually said that, that land borders are just imaginary lines to separate two entities that really are one.

If any, absolutely any, left wing politician, pundit or activist said that the MAGA'ts would call for them to be tried for treason. Imagine if AOC said the southern border was imaginary and Mexico and America should now join together!!! Steve Miller and Tucker Carlson would both sh*t themselves on live TV.

Our resident MAGA proponents here would fill these pages with how foolish she was, and yet, here he is, the President Elect of the USA talking like a member of the national guard after a few too many beers on a training weekend.

When you see how diplomatic and professional and engaging Harris was in the Capitol on Monday and think that that is what could be incoming but instead, it's this, it's maddening.

Doesn't matter. When Trump dies, his base will disintegrate into factionalism and internecine strife. No way are people like De Santis just going to meekly fall in line for someone so pathetically weak as Trump Junior.

Everyone thought that when Trump left the White House in a strop after inciting an insurrection.

    But here we are again.

For that reason I will never underestimate the collective stupidity of the US electorate.

As for Meat Ball Ron, he will do as he has proven in the past whatever he is told.

This is Trump's last term. He's the only thing holding MAGA together. Once he's gone, there's going to be a succession war over leadership.

So am I right in saying Greenland is not a sovereign country, it is in fact owned by the kingdom of Denmark, albeit the people of Greenland have autonomous rule.

So theoretically if the US annexed Greenland it would be invading the kingdom of Denmark, and by extension the EU?

Northern Ireland is obviously a famous example, and one I thought everyone here would be well acquainted with.

Can you see his base turn up to listen to anyone else ramble for two hours?

    This is Trump's last term

    We heard that before.

Obviously I hope I am wrong, but the reality is Trump Junior is 100% on his way to running in the next election.

You'd imagine after 4 more years of Trump muscle memory will kick in and the electoral remorse will be savage, but you just don't know in these times, let alone in 4 years time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,429 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

I certainly can't see his base doing a full 180 and rowing in behind something resembling a moderate republican.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,031 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Every land border is made up, that's not the point.

The point is how conservatives world wide treat them like their sacrosanct and here the face of the "in your face" conservatism is reminding everyone they're just imaginary.

As I said, imagine AOC saying similar and think how she'd be responded t.o

'I'm in my mid-40s and can hardly recall an event where Anerica was asked to get invoked in resolving a conflict, and did."

That's what I was responding to. Northern Ireland is an obvious example where the US became involved in resolving a conflict. I thought every Irish person would know that.

It is. You can make all the sarcastic comments you want but the Constitution limits someone to two terms.

Can you back up your claim about Jr at all?

Not a suitable example. That was mostly down to London and Dublin with support from the EU and the Clinton administration.

The 22nd amendment was introduced in 1947.

This is Trump's final term. Fact.

The 22nd amendment. Plus, if we are to hold the MAGA crowd accountable, Trump will be too old in 4 years, like they were saying about Biden…right?
