Finished it up a month ago, now its a 25 minutes cycle to work, leave at 8:30, in the door and at work at nine. Still not recovered from the other craic.

In Dublin city, the main roads are fine, however would er on the side of caution and take it easy. Side roads are OK, however would definitely take it very handy on any turn or cornering!

Morning! i drove again this morning... saw the cars completely frosted up outside and put the bike away! i think Friday will be good for commuting with rising temperatures...

I cycled again (Leixlip —> Grange Castle) and while my estate was completely white with frost, the roads along the way were all fine but the cycle path on the Nangor Road was as bad as my estate (I just kept a straight line and took it handy).

To be honest, the only issue was along the N4, one driver of a 03 Merc decided to squeeze past me (in the bus lane) while all other lanes were at a standstill. I'd say he was as close to the adjacent cars as he was to me.
As often is the case, I caught up with him queueing on the slip road at Woodies Lucan where I managed to relay my thoughts with a hard bang on his drivers window.

    How'd he take that? 😂

I was out on the Stillorgan Road at Belfield this morning in the car. Main roads were indeed fine. I was surprised to see cyclists cycling on the very white and frosty cycle lanes there tbh.

    Is it worth the risk

I think I'd be giving it a pass

If it goes wrong yad be saying why did I do it

I didn't stop to engage (and in hindsight shouldn't have banged his window).
He passed me again a few minutes later on the Ballyowen Rd but this time, he stayed out of the bus lane so was well away from me.

Honestly didn't find it bad at all this morning again. There was some frost on the road out of the estate so I just walked the bike down to the main road and went from there.

Bit of white along the cycle way at Herbert Park/ The Dodder and some along the N11 at RTE but not a single slip nor any feeling of loss of traction. I did put some new tyres on my bike in November so I'm sure that helped.

haven’t been on my bike since January 2nd. The weather was the main reason but for the last few days I just can’t drag myself out of my nice warm bed early enough to cycle…so ive “no choice” but to drive to work! Tomorrow I’ll cycle in…mind you, that’s what I said yesterday! :)

Was on the road on the cargo bike heading from around the Beacon to Ballsbridge, at about 0740. It was, surprisingly, absolutely fine.

Have made it in so far this week without fall, as others have said once on the main roads it’s fine so I walk the bike out of the estate. Tonight will be coldest for my neck of the woods so extra care tomorrow morning.

Hopefully Friday gets back to reasonable temps, I don’t mind the cold but the ice is the annoying part.

Roads were fine this morning. Not as cold as i was expecting. Met.ie said it should feel like -8…when in fact it was more like -2. Roads have been salted every day so they were fine for me. Worst part was my driveway and the car park where i work which were not salted! Good to be back on the bike.

i'm reluctant to get on the bike as i need to pump the rear tyre but the valve has broken. and i don't fancy the idea of wrestling the tyre off in that cold, to be able to get a new tube on the bike.

(yes, i know, i could take the wheel indoors and let it warm up first)

I took a spill on foot this morning. I was walking mostly on grass, but managed to slip onto my hip as I crossed a tarmac entrance. No damage, little bit of bruising, but I'm getting too old for this sh1te.

Anyone switch from road to mtb/cx with the change of weather? Or is it not really worth it?

    (Debating the value).

Did a long commute to work for many years ( 25k each way) but retired now so don’t have to worry about the weather. Looking at the conditions out there right now ( north Kildare ) I would think twice about cycling if still working.
At the same time it’s interesting to see how others assess risk and danger. Was walking the dogs earlier today and spotted a lady cycling down the road with her tiny tot baby happily tucked up on the carrier. Road had been gritted and was damp so probably quite safe but when you hear about the overreaction of some to the weather it’s also the case that many just take it in their stride.

    Stay safe.

That's why i waited a few days. I wanted to drive the route a few times and I also wanted the roads salted for a few days. If the roads were not salted and if there was snow or even rain forecast, there's no way i'd cycle.

I'm on the CX bike, was going to use the MTB but there are technical issues and I just couldn't be arsed. I think it makes a slight difference but not as much as low pressure MTB tyres would.

Same journey today. Took way longer; was freewheeling a lot and trying to keep the front wheel straight. Had to leave the cycle tracks a few times and use the road because this time the cycle tracks had hard-to-anticipate ice patches. Motor traffic was pretty light, so worked out ok.

Hopefully just tomorrow morning left and then temperatures will rise by Monday.

    I asked the same question

I've made mistakes which have cost one way or another

I know if I was a cyclist and it went wrong today I'd be asking why did I do it

I've a hybrid but it needs work done to it so it stayed at home while my regular road bike brought me to/from work over the last few days.

For me, the main roads were absolutely fine. Just need to be wary on less used surfaces - housing estates and cycle lanes although they were much better today than on previous days.

No, though self-quoting is a bit like this:

The estate (Dublin 16) was very icy last night, so dropped the youngest off to school via the Luas this morning (have pull-on ice cleats to go over boots, which I heartily recommend). But came some of the way back by Dublin Bike, and it was totally fine.

Its was -3 when i left the house and had risen to +2 by the time i got to work. I brought in a lighter pair of gloves and a lighter cap for my commute home as i'm expecting it to be a good bit warmer on the way home!
