Lowest temp in Cork last night -1. Slightly less cold than Mon night. All city schools opened at regular time Tues morning yet this morning its 11am because of an orange warning. The veil of cloud over the South was predictable and its just lazy forecasting. Hundreds of schools in the city affected by this inaccurate forecast

+4 degrees in my neck of the woods ... No snow ... orange warning and hospital appointment cancelled ... 🤨

-1 here in South carlow too. Not severe at all but the local roads are in terrible condition so probably right call for schools to be closed.

-3.5 here in North longford. Had to leave my daughter to work in Arva, just across the border in Cavan and it registered -4.5 there on my car. Schools are closed all around the area, both primary and secondary.

Wasn't too bad in Naas this morning. -2c with fog. The frost was easy to remove from the car.

Thanks for the great forecast this morning M.T.
Clears up a lot of the mystery for Friday and the thaw over the weekend.

0.5c atm in Greystones (and that's overnight low so far). Hard to catch an air frost here never mind snow!

So -5 was the general lowest temp with maybe -6 in a few spots. (Unless it dips further in the next couple of hours). Not knocking ME as I know it can be difficult but it appears a Yellow low temp warning (temps between 0 and -5c) may have sufficed for last night/this morning ?

-4 Maynooth. Schools still open. Good stuff.

Gerry Murphy on Morning Ireland earlier saying a layer of cloud prevented temps from dipping lower last night but tonight should be clearer in Munster for temps to potentially dip lower to -8.

The second time you've complained in a few hours. As already stated before, the city and county is huge, it's hard to put a direct line between city centre and more rural areas. Did it ever occur to you that many many teachers live outside the city, in more rural catchment areas such as Brandon, Ballinhassig, Inishannon, Rathcormac, Watergrasshill to name a few who are servicing the city schools who simply cannot make it to work until some sort of thaw occurs? Likewise, students travel distances to get to schools too.

Not sure you can please everyone anyway, but just from my perspective and being out early, it seemed dangerous to me out there, from the foot hit outside the door to my drive to town and back. Everyone crawling on their drive, maybe a few accidents and injuries saved?

Hard frost in Galway but thankfully the roads are ok. They were wet and getting slippy last night but it looks like a dry frost this morning if you know what I mean.

    Remember the poor birds.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

phone said -5 in mountrath. Water gone inside cattle sheds so at least that.

Met app showing -4 for Portumna atm. Dense fog outside and absolutely Baltic. Lots of ice around. I think the local and surrounding schools made the right decision to close today.

My daughter said a sheet of ice slid of the roof of her school yesterday, made a big impact hitting ground, luckily no one was under it at the time.

Doesnt look to get as cold tonight according to the forecast and yet there is another orange warning. Significantly colder Thursday night into Friday morning and yet it’s a yellow warning?

Hope that poor dog is ok after a night outside in such extreme temperature , not much insulation in a dog kennel , lets hope its a husky

This is the hardest frost I've seen in Ireland in at least ten years. I've seen harder before but I can't put a date to it, no later than winter 2014-15 anyway.

Did we not get a cold snap like this last year too?

my neighbour is a primary school teacher in the city, we are in north cork. there is about 5 inches of frozen snow on the local roads here, with a single track running through the frozen snow. only 4x4s and tractors are travelling locally. Many people are not the sharpest of tools

Does the same worry go for cats? Ours is a stray we took in and at midnight it went out by choice.
