SNOW RISK OVER THE COMING DAYS

Further snow accumulations can be expected across Ulster & North Connacht today and tonight. Showers will tend to die out for a time early tomorrow morning but Further showers expected on Wednesday into Thursday morning especially across Donegal Antrim, Derry, Sligo, Leitrim & Mayo at the highest risk. A few showers feeding into Tyrone, Fermanagh and Roscommon also could give some accumulations. Upper Air temperatures will be colder and Air temperature so the risk will be higher of anything that falls will be snow.

Friday there is a potential for rain and sleet turning to snow as it moves up across places but alot of uncertainty at the moment on this. The GFS really is on its own.

I wonder do these models take account of snow covered areas which lower temps further.

Just a bit of a nip in the air here in the capital, good walking weather. I think all of us can be relieved the warning has not yet been extended to Dublin, look at it there, our shining city on a hill, like a big beautiful beacon of light fighting off the extreme cold:

Zero snow in meath. Some slippy roads but nothing out of the ordinary at this time of year.

Gardaí issued a warning last night that some of the roads around Ballymote were treacherous, I don't know about today.

Just had a small snow shower here earlier followed by a lot of hail in East Sligo.

I think some of the reports are a little exaggerated, not sure what all of the fuss is about really.

Just a word of advice to the runners/walkers here, if you're out for your run/walk but need to go on the road to avoid icy stretches on footpaths please please wear high-vis or lights etc. Early this morning in the dark there was a fella out running on the road at a point where the path was icy and he was dressed entirely in dark clothing with no visibility aids. I genuinely came very close to hitting him and if there was ice on the road or I lost traction it could have resulted in a serious accident. It's bad enough in normal conditions but in this current cold spell you're putting your life at risk.

You'd want to have a few screws loose to go running on the roads and footpaths near me anyway.

Last bit over overnight snow left with me.

Filling water for the cattle to have in reserve in case of frozen drinkers. Take care on the roads everyone.

It isn't too bad here it has mostly thawed out but there are a few sheltered places still a bit icy so I think that's why people are out in it and just get caught at some specific points on their route.

Yeah i appreciate conditions aren't all like here. Hoped for some more of a thaw here today and while there has been some its still a mess out there which will undoubtedly get worse the next 2 mornings anyway

Heavy sleety shower north of Tullamore now. Not enough to whiten the ground but more than enough to undo any salting or gritting efforts. A good 10 mins so far. Almost black as night.

These top-up showers are enough to cause harm when the freeze kicks in. Not half as cold out today as yesterday, the wind is a killer; so hopefully the -8 or -10 being discussed for later in the week is windchill rather than still, cold temperatures?

Foothills of Knockmealdowns, West Waterford. Tempted to make the 10k dash to the shop as milk is getting low and freezing temps over the next two days it could be Friday before we can get to the shop again. Roads are very slippery.

Our stretch is relatively snow free. The road to town passes along the base of the mountains and has historically a few notable icy stretches.

Snow plough just went past so seems like a good time to get to the shop.

We didn't get any dusting or even that much frost just across from you in D5 ! Must be the couple of hundred metres nearer the sea?

Walking yesterday on seafront and it was bitter with an onshore south easterly that would cut you in half . Registered as 1 degree on phone app but said feels like - 7 and it certainly did feel that cold 🥶

Met Éireann started their campaign of warning us all last Friday but still every day on the radio they roll out a few bumpkins that are in disbelief the orange weather warning was accurate, there was not more warning, or it did not reach them in Ballyboghole.

Killaloe, such a beautiful part of the country. I would say there has been some windchill in recent days on the shores of Lough Derg!

Anyone living in Limerick and North Cork that can advise on the main Limerick to Cork road please? Have to make the journey this evening. Thanks.

Temperatures dropping back now. It was a mostly dry day, any precipitation we had was rain. So I was glad to miss out on the showers.

Still plenty of snow lying where I am in N Tipp, though the melt has made it porous ice. I needed to do the shopping and I have a steep driveway with 8-10cm on it and I was hoping it would melt, but no such luck.

Took me well over an hour to clear the snow and ice off the car and the large pile in front of it and then shovel out two clear tracks up the driveway to get to road. That all worked and I was able to get up and away and do the shopping. Reversing back down the tracks was fun, one slip and the car could slide into the corner of the house.

The top of Silvermines and Keeper hill look magnificent and like they could be anywhere on the continent that gets a lot of snow.

Glad that well well. Depending on you vehicle a quick fix is using rope like snow chains. Not a substitute for the real thing but it worked really well in a similar situation back in 2010.
