I posted this in another section of Boards but it might get more views here….

I have a lot of wooden fencing around the perimeter of my house, over 150m in total. This will all have to be replaced in sections of various length over the coming years. I am trying to decide if I should go with block wall or metal fence panels. I'm looking for approximately 1.8m in height. I'll be starting with a section that is around 25-30m long.

I can do the foundations or install the posts myself but if I went down the block route, I'd need someone to build them.

I'm trying to figure out which is cheaper. Can anyone help. If anyone had an approximate price per m for each option I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks.

1.8m block wall is a lot of cost and work, with piers/capping/ expansion joints etc

What about concert posts with the bottom infill piece concrete and then wooden panels as infill?

    How exposed is the site?

    Urban or rural neighbours?

Location location location, dalkey will be 2.5 times the price of Donegal. Is it for privacy, keep dog in or what. Saw a house recently with a fence of latch lats on a wire with an inch or two between them, cheap way out n would last.

Cementing in treated timber posts to hold timber panels is a waste of cement, steel or concrete posts

The best job would be V mesh green fencing but it's not cheap at roughly €65 per panel which is 1.8m. high x 2.5m wide. Posts costs around €26

The most economical option is concrete posts with 1.8m. high chain linked fence but not as visually appealing as the V mesh. Both options are DIY jobs - concrete post are heavy so a two man job, a good way to work off the xmas excess 🤣

Thanks very much for the feedback. I'm in Clare. I want something that is aesthetically pleasing. There are concrete fence posts in already but they are at the wrong spacing and of the wrong type so I'll be starting from scratch. I prefer the metal panels rather than the wooden ones due to the lack of maintenance. Just trying to figure out would it be much cheaper than a block wall which is also low maintenance.

    you could try

    H posts and concrete panels.

Enclosing your house with a 1.8m high block wall make it look like a detention centre even without the razor wire on top😊

Mesh fencing and hedge is the best combination IMO, if you don't mind getting it pruned once or twice a year. Also doesn't limit you to 2m.

I did post and rail for mine as I wanted the wooden look but now that the hedges are grown I can't see it anyway.

You don't need to use panels, you can attach mesh to steel posts e.g. clipex (who are based in Clare)
