The one I was told was “God’s little cow”

Someone should tell Pete Doherty that one.Surely a song in it.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I wonder will the show be repeated at all??? 🤔

I agree that he was trying to ‘crack’ Doherty a bit. That question “Are you ok with the fact that you weren’t around for your first two children?”, no one would be ok with that, it’s just an upsetting question. He initially said he didn’t want to talk about it and then recovered a bit and said he wasn’t ok with it, firing back at Tommy with a question are all your six kids with the same woman.

That bs about I knew the three year old would be a dope smoker and that Bob Dylan quote about the scars the sun can’t heal, a bit cringe, like he’s trying to score big moments or something.

I thought Doherty himself was actually fine and self aware and open.

Anyway glad the programme is back.

The irony is when Pat Kenny interviewed Pete Doherty, back in 2009. It went on the similar lines to the Tommy Tiernan interview tonight.

But back in the PK 2009 one Doherty got very uncomfortable, didn’t even feel comfortable talking about Kate Moss. Because it was like talking a about drugs. Wanted to get off the subject. But what else can an interviewer ask him? His music was always secondary.

Tommy’s interview questions were even worse IMO.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Did not see it. Sounds as if it would not be worth the hassle of watching on rte player. Who was the middle guest or was it someone most people never heard of either?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,263 ✭✭✭brian_t

The guests were Pete Doherty, Irvine Welsh, and Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh.

Music was by Sounds from a Safe Harbour with OPIA, performing "We Didn't Know We Were Ready."

Could of sworn Irvine Welsh was on it before

Never heard of any of them.

It is a pity this seems to be the best that RTE can do at prime time on a Saturday night. Luckily I did not see them, I was disappointed with Tiernans last few shows. Pity because he was very good a few years ago.

It's giving off vibes of a show which has run its course.

In fairness Pete Doherty is a very famous person, maybe for the wrong reasons but this makes for a good interview and Tommy conducted a good one.

I wasn't a fan of Irvine Walsh but the other two were interesting. I had never heard of Aedin before and likely never will again but still found her slot interesting as I find there is something nice hearing about someone interested in our history and language and in her case dedicating her life to it.

Seriously, who would you like to see? Bear in mind that we are a small island, its January so book launches are done and dusted and RTE has no money!

I just find posters on here will find a way to moan regardless of who is on.

The tribute to Eoin French at the end was heart moving. A young man who lost his life to cancer, you could tell from the performance that he was well liked, clear some of his peers still hurting from this.

I didn’t see it. Where did Irvine welsh lose viewers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

Hello Tommy. If you think RTE has no money, what do they do with all the licence fees AND all the advertising money?

You've never of pete and Irvine? That's on you 😀

"Seriously, who would you like to see?"

Ryan Tubridy. Tommy could allocate a whole episode to him. It'll never happen but that's my dream guest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

I googled them up, as when I asked someone who did look at the show last night for 10 seconds before switching to another channel, they just said some boring has-been with a hat pulled over their eyes was on.

OK, on google I see Pete Doherty was an English musician but not that famous or successful, and Irvine is not listed on a list of the top 10 Scottish novelists. And I have forgotten who the 3rd guest in the second half was, or the music act.

And they ask us to pay a licence fee for this cheaply produced prime time tv. As someone else said, it's giving off vibes of a show which has run its course.

Yeah hard to know if people are just being contrary, considering Doherty spent the best part of a decade making the papers for all the wrong reasons.

Then Trainspotting are there people about who seriously haven't watched or at least heard of the film?

I've "born slippy" ear worm now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,078 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Lots of people have absolutely no interest in musicians of lesser magnitude or fame such as Pete Doherty and lots of people have no interest in movies, so therefore would not have heard of Pete or Trainspotting. There are other other diverse hobbies and recreational pursuits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,376 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Let's be honest, Pete Doherty is an average enough musician, who is more famous for non-music related issues.

He is often thrown about as some sort of genius when it came to songwriting. A bit like Damon Albarn, who I'd say is much more talented than Doherty, even though I'm no fan of Albarn.

But he had basically one well reviewed album with a few memorable songs. Outside of that, he was always in the spotlight because of who he was dating or what drugs he was under the influence of. Basically all hype with little to back it up.

I watched the Louis Theroux doc with him. It was a boring watch. He came across as a right bore, who obviously has ideas way above his station.

I didn't see the interview with TT, because I've kinda gone off his show of late, as TT is also heading that way too. Thinks he's some kind of deep thinker and philosopher now.

Very reminiscent Pink Floyd Sid Barrett. There is cohort who extol his genius. But he fried his brain on acid and only ever had two decent songs IMO.

As Tommy said though Pete Doherty deserves credit for coming out of it. Pete seemed to like him for some reason, even said at the end if you want any more interviews give me a call. Maybe he viewed it as a paid therapy session?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I looked up the blackcurrent Inis Meáin festival that the third guest  (Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh) was on about -

    Article from 2023 -

    https://www.rte.ie/news/connacht/2023/0921/1406565-festival-to-celebrate-puiteachai-on-inis-meain/

"Puiteachaí" is not spelt like thought it would be at all. - obviously the "p" is silent.

It was funny last night how the order of guests gradually went from beaten and battered by life (Doherty), world weary (Welsh), to out and enthusiasm and positivity (Ní Thiarnaigh). The guest order was like that for a reason, end on a nice tone.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Well Trainspotting is actually a book that was made into a movie.

But yeah there are people who have zero interest in music, literature or visual arts.

I mean I've lost my hearing (officially profoundly deaf) in the last 10 years but I'd still have a fair idea of the current main players are (just wouldn't know what their music sounded like) by virtue of the fact I read a newspaper.

I think @itsacoolday watched it "for 10 seconds before switching to another channel". Seems to have the attention span of a goldfish but expectations and temperament of a member of a royal family based on their reply to my simple question of who they would like to see on the TT show which was to accuse me of being TT. Childish stuff.

I heard of Trainspotting. I did not see last nights TT show and when someone mentioned who was on it the Irvine name did not ring a bell. I googled him, he is a Scottish novelist, but not on their list of top 10 novelists.

I've gone off Tommy's show anyway, maybe because he had the same guests on more than once, maybe because of all the repeats or maybe because of other reasons. He was good at the beginning some years ago, I'll hand Tommy that.

According to who? I've seen him named in the top ten. I also have read at least 6 of his books!

Good for you in reading 6 of his books, I bet most people have not, as most books have sold very few copies. I can only go by google : when you google "top 10 Scottish authors" or top 10 Scottish novelists his name does not jump out.

Why did the first guest have a hat pulled down over his eyes (or so I heard)?
