No - it was December when I ordered, then February, then back to December (on Dec 24th Tesla said that reschedule was an error when I called them and that they were expecting late Jan-Feb) and as of this evening Jan 20th - Feb 4th window. But there’s a VIN now, so you know, probably have it by March? 😀

Enhanced Auto's aftersales support with constant software updates was in part a major consideration for me in purchasing. EA only have a few products that they do well, so that gives me some confidence that the support will be there long term.

There are plenty great OEM-looking aftermarket addons such as displays that run on Android available, but all it takes is a couple of updates from Tesla to potentially break features. If the product makers stop releasing software updates to counter this (often occurs as they move onto the next product) then you could end up with a brick. Or it could run perfectly for years to come. All comes down to how much your prepared to risk at the end of the day with these chinesium add-ons.

With this in mind, I've just purchased a rear mini-screen for the back of the console. I believe it's Linux based and as it only controls a few basic functions, hopefully it will remain stable enough. Picked it up on the Aliexpress sale today for €108.32 inc shipping, so if it did eventually fail, not the end of the world for me.

can anyone walk through sequence of steps of what happens after transfer of money with respect to tax, insurance, log book etc on the d-day. thanks.

Can you make the final payment in instalments over a few days? Or does it have to be in one go?

You can make payments as best suits. Make sure to quote your RN number as that is the mechanism for applyong payment to your accoutn. If made online you can usually see it reflected within 24 hours on your Tesla Account.

Once payment is made you can collect car. Insurance is up to yourself to arrange and Tesla don't take any role in this (or check). Once car has been registered, it is usually available to tax online within 24/48 hours but registration is often only done on the day before or on collection date so most people will tax car after pickup. Once tax is paid the Vehicle Cert (log book) is usually received in post within a week. Long story short all you need to do is pay the funds and you can pick up the car.

perfect that sums is all up. just to add how long can we drive the car until the tax and insurance disc is received?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,980 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    tax car online.
once taxed the log book will issue.

    Insurance is your own business.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,980 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    Don’t over think it.
    Collect car and drive home.

Insurance disc will take a few days. Same for tax.

Camera vision for improved visibility. Great except for those days when you get the message "left fender camera blocked" or "right drivers door camera blocked". Dirt or the sun's glare and suddenly that "improved visibility" is gone!!

I was on the road at 9:30am, not a cloud in the sky, crystal clear morning and no cruise control (never mind auto pilot) available due to reduced visibility

Must head from north east to west Cork tomorrow for a family funeral. Have heard that the pirelli pzeros on M3P perform very poorly in very cold conditions. With the impaired range in these very cold temps coupled with potentially severe snow/ice I was contemplating whether to use the diesel and avoid the complaining about 2 to 3 stops required for the approx 750km round trip.

Anyone any experience driving M3P in snow/ice conditions

Drove it with those Pirelli’s for 2 winters. At the low speeds you’ll be driving it’s not the tyres I’d be worried about. They are a summer sport tyre not designed for the colder snaps so they’ll be as good as any other similar tyre in the same conditions.

750km will be the clincher for me. Have you got charging while you’re stopped at the funeral? Will you be there long? You should get 400km or very close to it if you keep the speeds down and leave at 100%.

Family funeral or not I wouldn't go you have the perfect excuse not to go too with the weather.

I'll be staying overnight after removal but won't have access to charging and will have to do a bit of driving at location prior to heading back after funeral.

I doubt Id get 400km in this weather, even if taking it easy. Did same journey in early December, dry and much milder, and had only 9% left when I got to Mahon Pt having done 300kms

To be honest then considering it’s a funeral and you’ll be doing a bit of driving there, I’d just remove one thing to think about and take the diesel. The last thing you want to be thinking about is charging while at a family funeral to be honest.

Yeah I've kind of relucantly come to that conclusion also. Bit of a pain driving a 7 seater diesel with only 2 passengers. Was ideal for same trip over Christmas with 6 passengers and a shed load of luggage

You're correct in that it would be a perfectly legitimate reason to not attend most funerals but in this case I'm going unless the roads are closed

Would it not be just as cheap or similar to use the diesel since you’ll have to public charge 3 times in the EV? Probably use around €80 or so worth of diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,139 ✭✭✭creedp

Last time I travelled the journey I covered 746km and used 145Kwh so 196Wh/km. Started off with 100% but can't remember 😕 what soc I had when I returned but think it might have been in region of 12%.

So the fast charging cost €52 plus approx €10 for full home charge compared to approx €75 in diesel for same journey. However, I could have reduced the fast charging cost a bit if I was less risk averse and planned to arrive home with say 5% soc.

So for that journey the gap wouldnt be very significant and with the diesel I have the flexibility of travelling non stop on both legs which saves a bit of time. It also removes any uncertainty about charger availability which has become an issue with Mahon Point since Tesla opened up to all users and certain marques hog 2 charge points due to location of charge ports. Really, really annoying...

I’d say you’ve just answered your own question unless you’re worried about saving polar bears.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,988 ✭✭✭User1998

Yeah in that case its a no brainer to take the diesel then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Bannerman1969

If Mahon Point busy there's ESB fast chargers in Rochestown, Frankfield and Togher - all on your route with great services and within 8km of Mahon Point. But I'd still go in the diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,139 ✭✭✭creedp

Oh I agree with you there are multiple other options which is why if I wasn't driving a Tesla I wouldn't be charging at Mahon Point and hogging 2 chargers to the point that Tesla drivers are being forced to use these other chargers instead. Seems a bizarre decision by Tesla tbh.

If I was travelling by myself I would still go with M3 but with 1 or possibly 2 passengers I could do without the charging stops commentary, especially if there was any delays

Another thing to consider is AWD (unless diesel has it as well) as it second best thing after winter tyres in this weather. If you are going to places with steep roads it could make a difference between arriving or not to event.

Apologies if it's been covered before, can anyone confirm the kW/bhp of the standard RWD M3 Highland? I see various figures around - most common is 256bhp but this seems a bit light when the equivalent MY is 295bhp. Maybe a recent buyer might have checked the certification of conformity that came with the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,139 ✭✭✭creedp

Yes that point actually made me change my mind and after getting a signed statement that I wouldn’t get grief for charging stops I took the M3. Stopped in Ballacolla and a top up in Mahon point and all was well. Roads were clear except for a couple of kms near Cashel.
Was pleasantly surprised to see both an Id4 and an IX charging at Mahon point and using the correct stall. So there is no excuse for non Tesla’s to be hogging 2 stalls. Just reverse it at at angle and the charge point reaches the far side located charge ports.

With the exceptionally cold weather over next couple days in parts, some good cold weather advice for any recently new M3 owners…
