I wouldn't rule out him returning the 150k just yet.

It might be part of their great rehab plan.

Imagine if he announced tomorrow he was to return it. You could easily see him forgiven, and being offered some job or other in rte later in the year.

Be careful what you wish for. I hope he NEVER returns the money.

The Paddy Power sponsorship may be coming to an end? It was for a year and was announced in the 1st week of January 2024, but I don't think it actually started until a few weeks later.

I’d be willing to bet those first few comments are from the same IP address and that their posts coincidentally just all happen to praise NK clients……it’s just a coincidence they’re all using the same gushing descriptors whether it be Katherine Thomas or Tubridy or whoever is the subject matter….just a coincidence of course.

Noel from Dublin said “Brilliant to see you conquering the UK Ryan, but can’t wait until you come home to your millions of adoring fans in Ireland!”

Dee from Cork posted “I love hearing your 100mph delivery and fake guffaws at the most inane and unfunny things - it’s really helping me cope with my long-term illness.”

Why is there so much "gushing" involved in any Tubs puff-piece? It's guaranteed to appear in any write-up on Ryan.

Because both his fans and the NKbots have one thing in common with Tubridy - a very limited vocabulary (it’s why all the puff piece comments are practically identical). Unlike Tubs though, I don’t ever see them claiming to be voracious readers.

What's in it for the Indo? Running a full large like that, are they really desperate or does a few bob change hands for publishing this?

Do not be surprised if that sponsorship ceases or is replaced come February. You can bet (pardon the pun) that NewsUK have been seeking an alternative for the past year as promoting a gambling outlet would not really sit right with their perceived image and PR. There will be a focus on the Q102 relaunch for which his slot is sponsored by Hyundai and I would expect more broadcasts from that new Q studio. Although to permanently source Tubridy's slot from Dublin would require a logistical change in budget allocation from NewsUK to Wireless. Wireless have taken on Kathryn Thomas for which they have obviously budgeted for and I would say her slot will be sponsored also.

I was half expecting it to be written by Barry Egan. I have no idea if money changes hands for these puff pieces, but we are living in an era where newspapers are desperate for new content. It's why Churnalism is a thing these days.

Like him or loathe him, any Indo article about Tubridy will still attract attention no matter how vapid the content might be. I was amused when an ad for Renault showed up in the middle of the piece

It fills column inches and space online (content) and a “journalist” gets to put their name to it when in reality it’s a press release that will appear in multiple publications and multiple online sites with various other “journalist” names attached.

It’s a real life of example of the expression “paper never refused ink”. Noel must be devasted Lottie Ryan isn’t in the camp anymore as she could have read it word for word on her celeb goss update on 2fm…..if that’s still a thing? 🤷‍♂️

Tubridy had a letter published in the Sunday Independent a few years ago. I bet his best mate Russell Crowe has no idea how Tubs mind works or the junk he's written.

He mentions all the sports classes he avoided and says it all stands to you in the end, honestly! (Thats no way to get into senior hurling)

Also mentions I have regrets but you'll see them coming this time. You also have extraordinary good fortune. (Yes 150K to start with which I dont think he say coming)

I would imagine they did foot the bill.

One year they were announcing the return of The Late Late Show and the prize for the competition in the first night was a trip to NY with Aer Lingus staying in Fitzpatrick’s* yada yada yada. So what did RTE do to promote it? Fly Tubs - and you’d assume a small crew to NY to film a promo for the competition. Maybe a minute long ad with Tubs at various sights around NY pointing at things and saying “this could be you” type stuff. It likely cost a multiple of the prize itself and could easily have been done with stock footage - but no, fly him and a crew to NY for a few days plus accommodation plus food to film a 60sec ad for a competition. You couldn’t make it up. Whether they used the barter account for it or not it was an absolute waste of money and a complete indulgence of his majesty.

    • I stayed in the newer Fitzpatrick’s on Lexington for a couple of nights this past summer. There’s an old-fashioned writing desk in the reception area, with a copy of JFK in Ireland proudly displayed on a bookstand on it. I promise I’m not making this up.

Well, if there's something kind to say about Ryan, it's that he's very skilled at pointing. There's a whole thread dedicated to it.

Does he ever mention receiving ‘freebies’ on his Virgin Radio show?

#Ryanrehab is just sickening - I have hardly commented on him since he departed these shores as he’s completely off my airwaves considering I don’t listen to the stations he’s syndicated on- if he’s about to reenter these shores to do his cheesy Americana style waffle then fine - I don’t understand how any station would employ him here in Ireland but I won’t be listening-

but if he enters the realm of anything serious and starts lecturing the nation as he can’t help himself do that, by jazuz is he in for a shock - he hasn’t seen the vitriol yet that will be released if he does that-

he had his chance and he blew it with his over inflated ego and his complete insincerity considering the salary he earned- we saw the same with Gerry Ryan when the crash came in 2008 and he was moaning about taking a salary cut - I’m sick of these over paid and talentless eijits on my radio - the public aren’t idiots - I’m delighted to see many posters here call out that this article for what it is .

Well it got clicks and people talking so I guess even shoite news is good news from a business perspective - magazines such as RSVP or whatever it’s called survive on “celebrities” inviting the magazine into their home etc so I see this article in the same light- it’s not journalism - it’s PR done in the style of an article - it fills a page .
If it were just that, I wouldn’t care but it’s obvious this is the start of a wider PR campaign - I reckon a Saturday/Sunday morning “Miriam” or similar interview will be part of this “rehabilitation” - they’ll ask apparently challenging questions the answers to which will be well rehearsed I’d imagine - and that will complete the rehab process - cue announcements of Ryan back with RTE.

As others have said I can't see him returning to RTE, he's too much of a book mark to scandals that saw the TV license take plummet for a while. NK may try to bullshyte him back in but losing more vital revenue is too much to risk.

If he does get back to the island it will most likely be some private Paddy Power style sponsorship.

    I dunno- I don’t have your same faith I’m afraid 😀

We know if you put any gombeen into a morning slot and they’ll have “a” listenership - the question remains, how much extra will Tubridy bring to the party and at what cost? His days of commanding ridiculous sums are long gone but he’d probably still bring a bit more in revenue than your standard radio presenter - but would this additional revenue generated prompt a more resentful public? That’s too much of a cost to RTÉ - they need public support to survive

He's no Neil Prenderville who bounced back from a plane ****.

I hate hearing Neil Prenderville but people tune in for the sensationalism, but Tubs is too aloof for the average punter.

Prenderville and Joe Duffy love bleeding the misery out of any random punter whereas Tubs simply wouldn't be able to deign. Tubs is only interested in Tubs, whereas the other misery merchants know that their audience is the show.

Indeed- Prenderville got off very lightly - I never quite understood how he managed to stay on the airwaves

Some of you seem to have forgotten how much Ryan loved misery too. That he handled it slightly better and with better diction than Joseph Duffy maybe clouds it a little; but he certainly frequently bathed in the baths of misery, cancer, death, and illnesses. It made the tv show in particular unwatchable, as he always seemed to steer the conversation towards those topics.

If you were a lotto winner having just one 20 million with all family alive and healthy, he’d still find a way to reduce you to tears by the end of it 🤪

I gave up early on when he took over the LLS, and I never listened to him on radio but I 100% agree. From reading about both shows, he loved to wallow in other people's misery.

Speaking of diction, I have mentioned previously, that I am actually surprised at how poor his diction and his general delivery, is. I have caught a couple of minutes here and there since he started playing senior hurling because I listen to Q102 - apart from his show, obviously.

The singy-songy tones - coupled with speaking at 100 miles a hour - make for very difficult listening. Half the time I wouldn't know what he is saying. I can't imagine how a UK based audience would.

Back to the doom and gloom, oh as sure as anything, any sad story that hit the headlines, the researchers were there in a flash to get the person, or their family onto the show. And the really awful thing is that Tubridy has no sincerity or empathy for anyone, in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

My comment on his diction was it was better than Joe Duffy’s - a relative statement if ever there was one, and a very low bar. His vocabulary is very limited (and not at all on par with one who claims to be “a reader”). and his delivery is more 100mph than calm and collected. It really is astonishing in hindsight how he climbed so high - it could really only happen in an organisation as inept and corrupt as RTÉ.

Oh I know. It was just that it reminded me of how surprised I was at how poor his diction actually is, after all the years he spent being vastly overpaid, at RTE.
