Did you get it done through the public health system?

4 days on from the op. No major swelling of the area which is good. Have noticed more twinges of pain since changing from a jock strap to tight boxers. Occasional dull pain at the bottom of stomach/over groin area. Nothing hectic and haven't needed any ibuprofen or paracetamol since day 2. Hoping all back to normal in next couple of days.

Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to get the job done on medical card? The only option I have found is vasectomy.ie but it is only fully covered by medical card if you live in South Dublin or Wicklow, which seems a bit of a strange anomaly.

That is nuts (pardon the pun). For that price, you could get Dr. John to do it in Galway, and have the night before and the night after at a nice hotel in Galway, room service, etc.

3 weeks on from the operation and all feels back to normal thankfully. Went back running after 11 days slowly and have started to build it up. First couple of runs were the acid test but all went well thankfully. Went back playing football yesterday which is great. Felt a twinge when kicking by myself after 2 weeks so left it another week and now all fine. Delighted to be out the other end all going well and hoping to get the all clear in a few months. Fear of the procedure was 100 times worse than the procedure of the recovery. That would be my advice to anyone considering it. I put it off and was worried for months but in truth there was no reason to be. Recommended Dr John McCormick previously and still do. Best of luck to anyone considering the procedure in the future and hope you put your fears to the side like I did in the end.

Was this as a public outpatient with no medical card?

The boots tests look for levels of a protein and, in my opinion, run the danger of being a bit crude. They're designed to distinguish between "lots" and "less than lots" . So 50m/ml should give you a Normal but 0 to 20m/ml would give you a Low. I don't think a Low reading is any real indication of safety.

There are a number of places in Dublin which will do a proper lab check for 150 quid or so. Which doesn't seem bad for peace of mind.

(I've used my own microscope to check my own, er, sample. Sperm are surprisingly easy to see, if slightly disconcerting to watch!)

Mine cost 450 euros. It worked which is good but 15 months out, I have PVPS and it has screwed up my life and health. It was a risk I accepted, I guess. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have got it done. Not just because of the pain, I have spent thousands trying to get help and relief.

Sorry to hear that it has given you trouble. I am considering getting it done. But your post has definitely given me pause for thought. What is PVPS?

Post Vasectomy Pain Syndrome or as a physio told me, they don't know what exactly is wrong so they throw out a catch all term to acknowledge the catalyst for the problem was the vasectomy whilst offering no treatment plan. I had an infection shortly after the procedure, go loaded up with antibiotics, steroids and anti-inflammatories. Have had persistent pain along my left side. Have been to many GPs, urologists, men's health specialists, physiotherapists, psychotherapists…have had pelvic floor exams and invasive treatments, have had MRIs, ultrasounds and pretty much any scan you can think of. Was told it could be a blockage then told that is not likely the cause, told it is nerve related then told naw, now the current theory is that a muscle in my thigh is in constant spasm. I have spent thousands and many hours trying to figure it out and still no closer.

    Hey Lads.

I've been actively thinking of getting this done and I've see a few recommendations for Dr John McCormick and I just want to check I'm looking at the right one.

Was it through Vasectomy Ireland, below, you contacted him?

Well lads, pulled the trigger and went to get it done yesterday. Dr McCormick was 100% gentleman. Procedure was really quick and simple. Worst part for me was the anesthetic and the burning smell during the procedure. Took about 20 mins in and out.

Pain so far is really manageable, feels like a dull pain at most like a while after you get flicked on the balls kind pain. Ill update you over the next few days if that gets worse.

Got mine done 2020 just before Covid, also with McCormick in Dublin. I remember the smell being the worst too. Rest was fine. Some tugging on 1 side. But I had a check done only a couple weeks ago for the first time since the initial checks, and im still sperm free after 5 years. No pain, no nothing.

Has anybody suffered with sciatic pain since the vasectomy?

This sounds strange and i am 99% certain the two are not connected, but i have a small 1% curiousity.

I had never had sciatica before the vasectomy. About 1 year after it, i suffered very badly with it and have had it off and on since. I never connected the two until i was talking to a friend who mentioned that he had sciatica a few weeks after the vasectomy and assumed they were connected.

More than likely a total coincidence, but just wondering if anybody else had a similar experience.
