Firebird 50/90 indoor boiler

My father has an indoor Firebird 50/90 boiler. Lately it is difficult to get working. Plumber has replaced various parts but still not sorted. For about 15 mins after turning on it cuts in and out several times. Seems to work better if front cover is off. However there is a smell of unburned oil. Saw mentioned somewhere else that flue gases may be leaking back into the unit. Probably not safe if this is the case. Anyone come across anything similar. Thanks in advance

Your idea of leaking gasses might be correct. Biggest problem is that it seems that plumber checking it doesn't have much experience fault-finding boilers.

Have a look for someone who specialises in boilers. Should be an easy fix.

CO alarm is a must with indoor boiler.

with the cover off it suggests flu gas recycling

most likely spot with that boiler is the flange where the burner is mounted

proper boiler guy should be able to sort no bother

I came to post something about my own boiler and found this thread. Something similar is happening with mine. If it's on a timer, with or without the cover on, it goes on, stays on for a few seconds, then cuts off. If it's on continuous, it cuts off unless I leave the cover off. Any ideas? Many thanks.

The 50/90 is an antique at this stage. You might be as well replacing it with a condensing oil boiler - especially since the domestic oil boiler is being phased out (for new builds).

Possibly a similar problem. Perhaps post a pic of it, showing the area around the burner. Is it the same type of boiler? Indoor?

Be sure you have an up-to-date co alarm.

If I weren't renting, I'd be doing that. 🙂 It was installed in 2002 when the house was built.

Yes, it's an indoors boiler, it's definitely a Riello Firebird but I'm not sure if it's a 50/90 (TBH, I don't know what that even means, sorry).

I'm at friends tonight but I'll post a pic as soon as I get a chance. Thanks a million! (And happy new year, it goes without saying).

50/90 refers to the output range in 1000's of btu. It also helps identify the model. They all have their particular weak points and that gives a troubleshooting starting point. (Btw it's the landlords responsibility to sort this, but perhaps you have your own arrangements).

    Many happy returns.

I know, I just hoped it'd be something simple enough to fix, like clearing an air lock, so I wouldn't have to bother him.

Anyway, I'll post the pics as soon as possible. Thanks again.
