Typical of an English company , trying to muscle in on ireland , we are partof eu, they are not, and they dont seem to realise we are not part of UK

I don't think it is even the UK, it's the Comcast crowd in the US calling the shots. After all they ran one of the biggest and earliest Irish VoIP providers, Blueface, into the ground.

The Stream/Glass product is one of the worst TV platforms out of Sky by a long mile despite how great Now TV is - tellingly Stream/Glass is a Comcast developed platform whereas Now is all Sky.

Running an MVNO can be just as good as a full operator, if you invest enough time, money and effort. Sky Mobile seems to be suffering the same Comcast influence of keeping it cheap to develop and supply and not put any effort into the customer and technical support end of things.

With Stream and Glass showing zero signs of being significanly improved then I doubt Sky Mobile will either.

I seen that too but there was different questions on both sides. Odd format alright.

Will be interesting to see if these are locked to the network or not.

iOS 18.2 includes an official carrier file for Sky Mobile. But there seems to be an issue with it on the iPhone 13. You need to download a configuration profile to override the APNs it seems…

Wonder why it only affects the iPhone 13, that's interesting. Do you think this carrier file will finally fix the issues people have been having where the network gets stuck on Edge?

It's an odd one, I was wondering that myself. It did affect me, I had a signal but no data connection and had to download that profile to get it back. They had sent me a text last night about the issue. but I hadn't updated my phone yet.

I can see a few differences now that the update is installed. On unapproved carriers, it's possible to lock an iPhone on 2G or 3G, but those options are removed with official carriers. So the 2G and 3G options are now gone. Another one was that the Sky SIM would show 4G as LTE in the options, as well as beside the signal strength meter at the top of the screen, but it now shows as 4G, like most of the other networks do. The last one is that it now shows the network name as Sky IE in the network settings rather than Tele2 if the roaming mode on the SIM had ever been enabled.

The LTE vs 4G one is a curious one for me, I think it's something to do with how American networks marketed their service. AT&T pushed Apple to display 4G for their 3G DC-HSPA service, so LTE meant that you were on true 4G. I saw someone on Virgin Mobile with an iPhone and that also displayed LTE like Sky did.

Regarding Sky in general, I've had no obvious issues so am happy enough.

I downloaded the carrier file from Apple and opened it to see what was going on. They have AllowedProtocolMask set to 3 (IPv4 and IPv6), whereas the connection profile overrides this to 1 (IPv4 only). I don't know why this would only affect the iPhone 13 though.

Could it be that it's configured to look for IP6 connections, which may cause problems or dataless connections if there are virtual IP6 layers available but non functional on the carrier? Better to just force IP4 only.

    Evening folks.

Has anyone found a fix for connection dropping after every call made or received?

Getting fed up having to toggle airplane mode just so to connect again. If I don't do this, I receive no calls or texts.

3 attempts with support, but hasn't fixed anything

updated to iOS 18.2, iPhone 15pro, noticed no more edge it switches between 4g and 5g now, apn settings also now updated to skyIE not tele2, hoping this fixed the roaming issue.

Gave sky another chance today after the official carrier profile was released in iOS 18.2 and had a much better experience so far.

Signup was easy and had my esim up and running in 5 minutes.

Haven’t got stuck on Edge yet but I’ll give it another few days.

Did roaming work flawlessly for anyone ?

Took a few minutes but connected by itself in NI a few days ago.

I went down a rabbit hole of dissecting the Irish network carrier files to see what's in them. The new Sky file targets two network IDs: 272-25 and "24007-GID1-0d". 240-07 is Tele2 Sweden, so I'd imagine that this ensures that the correct Sky APNs are applied when the SIM is in roaming mode. It certainly seems to clear up a lot of the jankiness I had noticed previously.

Is it sticking on 4G and 5G exclusively now or still dipping to EDGE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭Cork981

I cancelled a few weeks ago due to multiple issues.

Signed up again after the official carrier file was released. The sign up process was flawless had an eSIM up and running in 5 minutes.

WiFi calling work fine and I was able to receive a few service messages for 2FA etc.

I haven’t got stuck on EDGE yet either and 5G speed are as good as Vodafone.

The public IP is now detected as Irish rather than the UK which was frustrating.

Only question mark I have now is roaming but I won’t be able to test that out for a few months.

Data drop after a call is driving me absolutely bonkers now. Strongly considering telling Sky to release my contract and I'll pay the premium for Vodafone. At least I know their network is good now.

Oh, and data wouldn't work in The Netherlands the other day when I was transitting. It worked on the way back, bizarrely.

    @Glaceon

How does one force it onto the new Apple default settings you mention that are new with the new iOS update?

Go into “mobile data network” and then click “reset settings”? That’s it?

    Anything other thing to do?

Glad I didn't switch to these cowboys. They sound like a disaster, I guess you get what you pay for,

4 times in the last 2 months I've been In the Netherlands for work and it worked once. Worked in other countries, Hungary, Germany, UK etc.

If you’re on iOS 18.2, you don’t need to do anything, it’s applied for you. Except if you have an iPhone 13, you won’t have data service until you apply the profile from http://www.sky.com/help/articles/ios-help

I got to the stage where Vodafone were to start charging me €40 per month for unlimited calls and texts with 10GB of data. That wasn’t paying for a better service, it was just robbery. I honestly would have been better off on a prepay service with them if I were to stay on.

I've switched myself, my stepson, wife and mother-in-law over to Sky Mobile. Initially, my port was perfect using eSIM. My Wife and mother-in-law's were fine too. No issues. For my stepson though, I added an extra SIM to my account for him and this is where the fun starts. He needed a physical SIM so that came out. I installed it and started the activation process. There was some delay and then I noticed there was a new option on my Sky Mobile app to activate SIM so I clicked that and then it started the number porting process. This went through quickly but instead of activating the new physical SIM with my stepson's number, it ported his number over my number on my eSIM. I then had his number on my phone and he had a Sky number. Disaster. After approx. 10 WhatsApp chats and 6 phone calls, I finally got a call from the porting team who explained that they would send out 2 new SIMs. One would have my stepson's number and the other a temp Sky number. The SIM was then installed in his phone, and sorted. He now had his number back but I still only had a new SIM with Sky number and they had to start retrieving my old number so it could be ported to my new SIM. That was 2 weeks ago and despite another 4 or 5 WhatsApp chats and 3 phone calls, I am no closer to getting my number back. Tearing my hair out with it all

They mustn't have road tested their own front end at all. There's probably a developer who can properly implement a multi user profile with porting, but his job was done, and the rest is down to the level of training and the competence of the customer facing staff. They seem to be dependent on the existing Sky media/broadband/tv staff to deliver this whole new service. The early bird often gets eaten by the worm unfortunately. It happens in all technologies and services, even though MVNO provision is a well established game, Sky probably added their own bells and whistles that few up there fully comprehend. They're learning at your expense it seems.

I made the mistake of bringing my main number over to sky yesterday after things looked much better since the official carrier file was released with iOS 18.2.

My number transferred to Sky partially so I can make calls and send SMS but can’t receive any calls or texts from any network other that Sky. I’m guessing it’s a split port situation and will need the porting team to manually sort it out. God only Knows how long this will take to get resolved. I can’t port out either as I can’t receive any SMS verification codes.

It boggles me how every person seems to have a different issue with them. iMessage not working, roaming not working, porting not working, how is it this inconsistent???
